I wondered about this when watching "Young Adult" last night and hearing yet another reference to "Star Wars".

Immediately I assumed SW was well up there, if not at the top of the most referenced film in other films.

My wonderment lasted for about 10 seconds before realising the age we live in and that an indicative list is but a few keystrokes away.

Anyway, here is the link to some lists on the subject.

http://nopundit.blogspot.co.nz/2004_07_11_nopundit_archive.html#108967351947688051

I can't vouch for their complete veracity but thought some of you may be interested.

Totally agreed.  Not often you find a list like this where everything makes sense and nothing seems to be missing.

Here is a cool one where the "original" name gave me pause:  Il Buono, il brutto, il cattivo

For a fun brain teaser, try to figure out what this iconic film might be before Googling it or something.  You've heard of it.

Hey, it's my tiny, little IMDb!

The Good, the Bad, the Ugly?

My only tip-off is Buono is very close to Spanish's bueno, which means 'good'.  I'm guessing this is portuguese?

Just looked it up on Google and it gave me a link to a youtube video.

What's with the Smashing Pumpkins 'The Aeroplane Flies High' advertisement?  I was a huge Pumpkin fan and it was awesome seeing it, but t's about 16 years too late, isn't it?

I own a lot more of those movies than the top 250 of theirs.

"I remember a time of chaos. Ruined dreams. This wasted land. But most of all, I remember The Road Warrior. The man we called 'Max'."

THE PINBALL WARRIOR (scifi, WIP, ~30 pg.)
A STAND AGAINST EVIL (short, 9 pg.)

- Nice. The only reason I knew this though was because of the IMDb Top 250, it used to be listed this way.

Yeah, the list seems about right, don't it, at least in the top tier. Obviously, one could never guess the figures but the order seems solid…except one...

2001: A Space Odyssey is up very high.

I would never have thought of that to be in the top 20 or more.

But hey, I ain't complaining, one of cinema's greatest treasures.

I'll bet that is for the soundtrack.

How many movies you think have spoofed that "dum...dum...dum...DAH-DAH" music?

- Ah yes, of course. Richard Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra"...and I didn't even have to Google that one

Don't you mean "dah...dah...dah...DUM-DUM"?

Sure, fine...make me look like a total moron for giving you the hooked-on-phonics version...

That isn't helping.

Any discussion about 2001 whether its hooked-on-phonics or not is all good in my books.

Just as long as Hal remembers to open the pod bay doors to let me back in!

Would have said Star Wars myself personally...and I think in a very short time that will prove to be the case.

Hard to imagine any film having such an impact on world culture ever again...
