I consider myself a bit of a tough guy. But that torture scene in Braveheart. Jesus man, every fukin time. It’s the faces in the crowd…”mercy mercy” and then Mel Gibson’s…Freeeeedom…(tear rolls down cheek) never fails.
There's a lot of people hate Braveheart. But I'm not one of them. Even though the history is way off, they made a damn good movie. Ah, back in the day when Mel Gibson was a star.
Anyways, Mery Christmas Mr. Lawrence was always one get me sniffing. A buried Bowie and Tom Conti confronting a Japanese guard. Several scenes that make me weep.
It's quite a weird film that's strangely compelling and of the type they don't seem to make anymore. The lazy barstards.
When writing we all know how hard it is to tug on the heartstrings. Is there a particular movie scene that gets you teary-eyed? It'd be nice if you could find it on Youtube and post it here.
For some reason, (not related to movies in any way) when I get into a crowd of people, or see a crowd of people together, working together on "something", I feel tearful to the point I feel I must remove myself and go away somewhere alone...
Recently, during the winter Olympics, I continually experienced this phenomenon and I must add, that as a child I had this same feeling on occasion, in movie theatres. I equate it with a paradoxical feeling of both "loneliness" and "togetherness" at the same time. ... In this regard, I think, perhaps, that strong and good movies and scenes within movies do just that:
They help to make us witness to the fact that we are all terribly and utterly alone, and yet-- by some grace of G-d or whatever you want to think, we've been given the gift of each other. Maybe... when writers find these so called "connections" they strike the proverbial nerve/nerves in us that make our spines tingle, our skins to crawl, or some kind of everlasting feeling of eternity that cannot be dissolved in the deep waters under the Titanic or the dark void in the skull of a Voldemort.
...anyways, I guess it just proves, you don't need to have a character die in order to produce sympathy, empathy, and or otherwise, the feeling of a heartfelt connection.
This thread brings up so many good questions. I think it deserves a solid place on the boards for awhile.
I wouldn't say Cry... but i definetly get that little lump once in a while
The ending of United 93 gets me every time.
Something about Bruce Willis' delivery gets me with this one too. "An old man dies, a young woman lives. Fair trade. I love you nancy" --Hartigan - Sin City.
Out of the emotional deepness of this scene, I think the shot is brilliant in any form; ending with Luke's posture in front of the fire; simply phenomenal. Ayayayayayaya...
Holy hell, what the fuck was that? The biggest load of shit I have ever seen or just a huge rain of piss?
Either way, as a big fan of the previous Superman movies, this flick might even surpass Superman IV as the most pointless and ridiculous film in the franchise. Awful.
This film makes me cry because how frickin' terrible it is.. yet it's gonna make money and a follow up will continue in the same vein.
Crikey, at least I felt something with the other Superman movies. This fucking thing just goes so over the top it turns into a Transformers movie. Dreadful. Forced. Frickin' one of the worst films I have seen in a long time.
I'm going to add a 'girly' one and say: Steel Magnolias. That kid should have got an academy award. Gets me everytime.
And a ditto to Eternal Sunshine. The premise is both ingenious and heartbreaking. If you've ever had your heart broken that simple idea makes a lot of sense.
Anyway, digging around old threads and figure I might as well post for the sake of it. Most of you have probably caught this short film already, and I’m not sure this really constitutes as a “Scene that made you cry”, however, the local theaters like to tuck this little gem in among the numerous pre-show commercials every time I take my kids to a movie (now, I’m not saying there’s a conspiracy involved here) but, I’m pretty sure its sole purpose is so the ushers can watch me suffer an emotional catharsis… at least they’re humane enough to give me those dark 3D glasses to hide the tears.
