I'm very disappointed the film will not be showing in NYC, a place I still consider "home" even though I no longer live there. But these are the locations that the feature film I wrote (The Suicide Theory -- workshopped here on SS in 200 including 2 theaters in LA, 10 theaters nationwide in total... still don't have the Canadian theater locations, will keep everyone posted.

The film will be released in select theaters and VOD on July 10th (U.S. and Canada)...

Well done for getting a theatre release, no matter how small. Hopefully it takes off like Reservoir Dogs, you never know. Good luck.

Hey guys, as the film approaches its theater and VOD release on July 10th, here's an AWESOME new trailer of the film. Really cool to see the "R" rating at the beginning, the film festival thingies and the film critic quotes. It's been a childhood dream of mine. #ThisIsAwesome

Not playing anywhere near me, but HUGE congratulations! Congratulations on getting it into theaters, but also being the first person from SS to do so! There has been so many people over the last ten years I've been here, that has come close. So many promises. So many expectations  that ended up in disappointments. I'm really really happy to see that it worked out for someone finally.

I'll have a couple of extra Guinnesses in your honor on those dates...

Awesome review from The Hollywood Reporter! http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/suicide-theory-film-review-807180

The Suicide Theory hits theaters on VOD July 10th, just 3 days from now! Here's a listing of theaters (10 in the United States) that it's playing at... https://www.facebook.com/notes/the-suicide-theory/the-suicide-theory-us-theaters/666869823413659

It will also be available on Itunes and Amazon same day. We received a bunch of reviews so far, most of them very positive (with the exception of one REALLY negative one). Check out the film! Won't be on DVD til September...

That's fast onto VOD... i suppose you've got to take whatever distribution deal you can get. I'm going to have to look into this more. Tarantino didn't go straight to DVD, he hung around the back street cinemas (indies) for over a year. Maybe because he'd built up this thing where his film Reservoir Dogs was banned. Took around a year before he managed to get it on the mainstream cinemas.

VOD seems to be a trending thing now, especially this "same day it's in theaters" thing. I've been noticing more and more films getting this treatment (Dark Places starring Charlize Theron, I remember Margin Call, a great film called Kill List, etc)

It's all about the money, bro. Costs a lot to keep a film in the theatre not to mention advertising costs. Shame the indie cinemas aren't as good as they used to be. Seems like there would be a market there. But the ones in my city have all shut down. I suppose VOD is the new indie. Anyway, good luck mate.

Sorry bro,

I had a death in the family and could not make the show in Dallas.

I wanted to, big time.

I'm hoping to find another window to catch this show.

I also saw your post on FB eariler, bro.

DO NOT allow those who never had your interest at heart to begin with, all the sudden come in and act as though they are full of concern where your future is concerned.

Funny how that works...when things are all the sudden clicking, amends need to be made.

Ride your tide. Have fun and dont let those who pissed on you have a chance at a second shake.

Shawn.....><

I will check it out as soon as I get home!

Out of curiosity, did you get a DVD? Are your friends asking for a copy? That happened to me, but to be honest, I never got any. I had to pay to see them!!!! Explanation I get is that the movies are such huge files that it would cost to much to print up a bunch of DVDs for everyone in 4k.

Awesome, Pia, hope you like it! No, I did not get a DVD (Netflix and DVD in September I believe)... my friends have actually been renting/buying the film via VOD outlets. I actually saw the film in theaters on Friday in Pennsylvania... so I ALSO had to pay to see the film. I had a private link for a while, but Freestyle Releasing (distro company) had the link taken down.

Bought it on Amazon today! Didn't have time to watch today, but will get to it this week for sure!

Dustin, about the DVDs, I think it's a cost and time thing. A feature film in 4k is such a huge file that it's expensive to burn the DVDs and takes forever. Studios send off their films to companies that do this on a large scale, but when you're dealing with indie companies, printing up several DVDs for everyone involved, cast, crew, writers, producers and so on, it ads up. When I finished TTD I made a total of 50 or so copies. It turned out to be a bigger chunk of the budget than I had planned, but I had promised DVDs and posters to everyone. This expense, btw, was not part of my original budget, so it was basically out of my own pocket after everything was over....and that was for a short.

Michael,

HFS!  This was incredible!  I was absolutely blown away by this film.  I read an early draft of the script and thought it was clever. To be honest, I wasn't expecting the finished film to do the script justice nor was I expecting all aspects of the film to be as good as it was.  Cinematography, acting, sound and sets were absolutely amazing for an indie film.  The film can hold its own against nearly any thriller I've seen coming from the major studios.

Damn it was good.

Ah man, thanks Don. This script really meant a lot to me and this website had a lot to do with the film's success (in terms of getting picked up, etc). I think it's getting close for this website to start being a production company... one of the special things about this site is that it's given a lot of people a start, but I really think it's time this website starts getting involved in film productions... not necessarily like Triggerstreet... the special thing about this site is giving people starting off an opportunity... but I really feel like this website oughtta get involved in movie production without losing sight of what made this website the awesome place it is... this place is special. This place offers opportunity. And it gave me my start. And there's so much talent here, it's ridiculous.

I had to buy a whole hard drive just for our short, All About Janet. Once the grading has been done the file grows massively. I had to go to London to pick up the film and it's very expensive to park there, like Ł20 ($30) for two hours. Anyway, I had to wait 5 hours for the file transfer onto my hard drive... and I bought a high powered USB, otherwise it would have been twice that. I can just imagine the raw size of a feature.

Once it's converted though, it's not too bad... however, upon conversion/compression there is a huge loss to quality. I think if I were to give DVDs out that I would sacrifice a little of the quality and convert it before copying any out.

Oh and spesh, I've said it numerous times already, probably starting to sound like a broken record, but well done, mate. The high praise from Don says it all.

I love the premise and I've been interested in seeing the movie ever since I heard of it.

Watched it today and the opening grabbed my attention straight from the get-go. Somewhere around 20-50 minutes it felt like action, violence and dark comedy for the sake of it. While still quite enjoyable, I felt it didn't pull me in as much. Back the other way around, the last 40 or so minutes had me on the edge of my seat. The aspects of fate, loneliness, revenge etc. were interesting and fit into the mix well. The reveals around the end and the ending itself closed everything excellently and made the movie imo.

Personally, I would have liked to see a bit more focus on Percival not being able to die. It felt somewhat underdeveloped with only so few methods tried, maybe an unlikely coincidence that would have stopped him from some of the more gruesome and more effective deaths. Although, that's just a small gripe of mine. The film was good, particularly for an indie movie - congratulations on getting it made!

Looks like you've done well with theaters and distribution, too. Haven't bumped into you around the boards before this, but I'm glad to see someone from SS make it. Hopefully this opens doors for you and I'm looking forward to seeing what you do next!

Thanks to those who've seen the film and who have supported the film. There's so much talent on this website, I'm sure the next year or so we'll see more and more SS'ers with films out there in theaters (I know Shawn is doing big things right now and Pia probably has more film credits than anyone on here... she has a shitload of films out, only a matter of time before she has a theater release).

The reviews have been pretty good overall (73 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), especially from top film critics (Variety, Entertainment Weekly, Philadelphia Inquirer, Seattle Times, LA Times, etc). The critics who didn't like the film (as well as audience reviews) felt the film went off the tracks in the final act... which is strange because the final act'o twists received a lot of praise when it was just a script. In fact, the final act'o twists was one of the things that drew filmmakers and actors to the script.

Either way, I'm just happy that the film is getting some exposure. I think the lead (Steve Mouzakis) is gonna be someone we see more and more in bigger films.

For those who haven't seen the film yet, it is still in select theaters in the U.S. (the locations listed below). If you can't catch it in cinemas, it is available on VOD to rent on most major cable outlets (Comcast, Cablevision, DirectTV, Dish Network) as well as Itunes, Vudu, Amazon and just recently Hulu Plus (this may only apply to US and Canada).

Here's the trailer and list of theater locations.

I couldn't find it on Comcast.

My computer sucks, so I won't even bother watching it online.

Do you have a smart TV, Steven? If not, don't you live in Philly? It's probably about a half-hour drive from you, but the movie's playing in Lansdale.

Finally got around to watch this.

Hands down, the best movie ever made from a SS script!!! At least as far as I know. I loved this film! Seriously! As someone who's had a bunch of films made, I want you to know how much I appreciate seeing this indie film. You should be very very proud! It looked and felt pro all the way around. The story was GREAT and I loved the twists. Didn't see the last one coming! Great acting is what I think might have been what made this one feel so pro.. A very HUGE congratulations to you!

I have a couple of questions.

How close is the final film to your script? Did the filmmakers work with you and ask for rewrites?

I'm asking this because most of my shorts and features have not been close to my scripts at all and never have I've been asked to work with the filmmakers to improve the script. My last feature, Scarred, had the lead work with me to improve the script. It made the script so much better, I wish I would be involved more in every production. All they have to do is ask...

So happy you enjoyed it, Pia! The acting really did carry the film IMO... the lead Steve Mouzakis especially was awesome! He's already doing big things, we'll see him in some big films soon... just to know actors like Tom Hardy read the script (back in 200 says a lot. Toby Kebbel actually agreed to play the lead (Dr. Doom in the upcoming Fantastic 4 film) but it didn't work out (schedule conflicts)... but casting Steve was a blessing in disguise. The film was close, though parts from different drafts were used in the film... they did improv some scenes, which made the acting really shine, though one major error I keep getting blamed for... the Percival character speaks about jumping off the Humber Bridge in LONDON (2nd scene)... the Humber Bridge is not in London. In the script, I wrote Humber Bridge in England... all good, though.

I was close with the director, so i worked on rewrites with him up until pre-production.

I'm sure we'll see some awesome SS films soon, better than my little itty bitty film... but I'm glad you enjoyed TST!

Hey Michael,

Checked this out over the weekend on Fios. Definitely a grower for me. Wasn't completely onboard from the start, but I was increasingly engaged and pleased with how it played out, especially when the apparently contentious twists started to kick in toward the end. I honestly don't understand the objection, given that they were basically set up as fair game from the very beginning. As plot devices, I thought they were effective, but for me, I appreciated the emotional resonance more. They clearly weren't meant to be just token mindfuck moments.

A lots been said about Steve Mouzakis. I gotta give it up for Leon Cain as well, and the two played off each other quite nicely. Wouldn't have thought something like the bowling alley scene would've clicked the way it did with the way things started, but it was fun. I couldn't help but feel it was a little silly, but even that was endearing, as opposed to something I'd have to ignore to enjoy the rest of the scene. One of my favorite moments, honestly.

Most importantly for me, the writing seemed like it wasn't content to settle for the same bullshit. This is important to me, even if something comes out a little off, both as a writer and a viewer. Just wanted to pop in with my support and say congrats as well. Keep at it, sir.

Hey James,

Thanks for watching the film, dude... most reviews, even a lot of the positive ones, say that it was really strong for the first hour or so and then got kind of ridiculous near the end... refreshing to hear the opposite from you.

I agree the acting was amazing, probably carried the film... I pride myself in creating juicy roles for actors, but these two leads enhanced what was on paper and made the script much better than it was.

Thanks again, James, looking forward to seeing more work from you!

Awesome, James, tell me what you think!

And by the way, folks, "The Suicide Theory" was the number 1 rental on Netflix it's first two days! Right now we're number 2 (just checked a few minutes ago)... it probably won't last long, but still pretty damn cool. Keep watching!

Michael,

I've never read a thing from you, unless my memory fails me, but this film was fantastic! I was hooked from the moment our two leads met each other and the surprising abruptness that ended their first conversation.

I don't generally like thrillers, but this went far from the norm. I'm no critic and I don't ever care to be. I can see some (I read some reviews) complaining that the second hour was slow in comparison. I can kind of agree, only because the stuff that riddled me was at the beginning. I wanted to know more. But, the characters (actors) kept this going throughout. Steven was so ignorant to so much it almost makes him a likeable killer. Percibal was a face of pain over a warm heart.

SPOILER

The only twist I sniffed out throughout this, and I don't try to, was that Steven killed Chris and started this chain reaction. It didn't lessen my liking of it at all because this was more of a character piece.

END SPOILER

Just wanted to say this was great. I'm recommending to friends and hope every watch adds at least a tiny something to your wallet. Congrats on an awesome production...

James

Hey James,

Thanks for checking out the film and spreading the word! Glad you enjoyed it... I saw both So Dark and So Pretty a while back... think I did comment on both films. Really enjoyed them both, very slick production value, solid acting, came away very impressed. So much talent has emerged from this site (Pia, Shawn and yourself to name just a few). And Janet's script "Stream" is really making some waves during its pre-production phase (I know the director of that film personally -- I guarantee that we will ALL be talking about that film soon).

Thanks again!

-- Michael
