Better than being French, I suppose.

We mostly descended from the French, maybe some Saxons and Vikings thrown in for good measure... not to forget the Celts, Turks and the Moors. Anyway, let's call it the Normans. We then learned a new language fought the Normans (our descendants) for our independence from France (technically ourselves) and won.

We then discovered America, conquered it and then, after learning a new language , fought for independence from Britain (technically ourselves) and won with the help of France (technically ourselves).
