So last night I watched Empire Records, for what realistically would be no less than the 50th time (I watched it a lot in the 90's).

It's not my favourite film, although I do love it, but I would have to say I've definitely watched it more that any other movie.

It has great, lovable characters, a simple but enjoyable storyline, the best soundtrack of all time, some great one liners, and Liv Tyler and Renee Zellweger looking absolutely amazing.

So what's the one film you have watched more than any other, and what keeps drawing you back to it?

Star Wars, Jaws, Aliens, Terminator and Raiders of the Lost Ark  In that order.

The only films I've watched more than once since being an adult are Youth without Youth (in order to try and decipher it) and the Matrix, I think.

There are so many hundreds of films yet to see, I don't see the point of watching something again.

Love and Death and Annie Hall - Woody's two best IMO.  And Holy Grail and Life of Brian. I can pretty much recite all 4 movies.

Jaws. Been rewatching endlessly since I was six or so. Really doesn't require an explanation for anyone who's seen it. Second is probably Jurassic Park just given the time since I first saw it.

Jaws appears to be a very common trend.

It's really quite a masterpiece in terms of making a very predictable story into something timeless.
It's got the brilliance of the tension, the incredible chemistry of the leads, the wider social issues, the typical but well realised character flaw to overcome, perfect set pieces, man vs nature and then the kind of genius moments like when they're singing together.

Yeah, it's pretty much a text book "How to make a movie"...both in terms of script and filmmaking techniques. The early Spielberg was really something.

Mad Max 2 is a film I'll drop everything for if I find it's on.  No fluff storytelling with great action sequences.  That and The Long Good Friday - for that end sequence alone.

Probably cheating, but it's the Back to the Future trilogy for me. The first one in particular is basically flawless in terms of the writing - simple but rich premise, ticking clock for tension, memorable and well-defined characters, PERFECT use of a B story / subplot to add depth to the whole narrative with the A and B stories deftly converging at the climax, strong running gags, enjoyable set pieces... it's pretty much perfect imo.

That, and Groundhog Day.

Guess who's back? Back again?

I also loved the Back to the Future Trilogy as a kid and watched them over and over again on the big screen.

I also loved the Beverly Hills Cop films. Eddie Murphy is the sole reason I used expletives in almost every sentence by the age of 14.

Cobra - Sylvester Stallone.

Top Gun.

Ghost.

The Princess Bride... such an epic story. I tried to get my kids to watch it recently but they weren't interested. Blasphemy!

Unforgiven. Pale Rider. Gremlins. Scarface. Robocop. Bladerunner. Terminator. Lethal Weapon.

Back then, films meant more. They were all we had.

Princess Bride is a classic - will be shown for years, much like the Wizard of Oz.

Yep same here. Saw it at the cinema on release as a 13 year old and prolly watched it maybe 50 times since then though not for awhile.

The acting is superb - still amazing that Robert Shaw didn't get a Best Actor nom. But then again, back then, there would be like 10 first class movies on offer at any given time.

The early Jackie Chan films used to get thoroughly watched too. I remember the Drunken Master in particular. Then there was the 80s rise of US kung fu and the ultimate film was made. The Last Dragon.

Behold magnificence:

Hard to say for sure. I'm not really keeping track, but I've definitely seen these a good amount:

Braveheart, Apocalypse Now, The Big Lebowski, Top Gun, Black Swan.

That rug really tied the room together.

Braveheart as a wee one? Damn, I'm getting old!

Other classics: The Great Escape; The ORIGINAL Magnificent Seven; and The Man who shot Liberty Valance. And, of course, any Clint Eastwood western.
