Need everyone to send good thoughts our way down here in Houston. Surrounded by water all over the city due to Harvey and expected up to two more feet of rain through Tuesday. Tornadoes all over the city. Can't evacuate because we can't get out. Pretty grim here.
Hope I'm around long enough to see how I did in the Quickie!
Peace and love, Gary |

My husband is in Houston right now. He went there for a week and bam - Harvey came. We have a house there and he actually had to take care of the roof, it requred some mending. Yeah, like perfect time for it, the best actually. He didn't buy enough water so I told him to fill in the tub on the 2nd floor at least and drink from it if the supplies come to an end. Then the ceiling of the first floor right underneath the tub started leaking and he got rid of the tub water. He's got the power and everything though - at least says so. Where in Houston are you, Gary? We leave right at the bayou, Gessner and Memorial. |

Hey Gary, stay safe. Hurricanes are not to mess with. People think of them as wind events, but it's the water that cause the most damage and destruction.
Hope you and yours get through this unharmed.
Your husband and house too, Khamanna.

Thanks everyone -- Kham, that is the definition of a small world. I'm literally less than a mile from you in Briar Grove Park. We're a block off Buffalo Bayou. The bayou is now out of its banks and houses at the entrance to our subdivision have a foot of water in their house. We're okay so far (SO FAR!!) but it's looking pretty desperate for us all in our neighborhood. But whenever you're here in Houston, let me know and we can meet! Assuming I'm still here, of course!

Thanks, Pia.
Things are not getting better in Houston, today they asked the residents in our neighborhood not to flush toilets. And advise to not use cars either as the streets are flooded. That's what I read inthe neighborhood letter. Anyway, good luck Gary, hang in there. And stay safe. |

I've been watching on the news. HOLY COW!!!! I know five people in the area including Gary and Khammana, even though she's not there at the moment. Some seriously unbelievable pictures. The most heart wrenching being the people in the nursing home sitting in wheelchairs with water up to their waists. Stay safe all of you. |

Hawkeye's situation (As of 12:58 pm edt)
We're safe at this time although completely surrounded by water. Hoping for a lull in the rain so we can get some recession in the water. ...we're prepping to move to higher ground if things get worse, but for now, ok! |

Thank you guys.
They released reservoirs into Buffalo bayou today. The rain doesn't stop. My husband keeps sending me videos and seemingly the water keeps rising. This could go for days. Some of our neighbors evacuated on boats.
This is so sudden( stay safe, Gary! |

Hi all -- a quick update. It's now Monday evening about 7 pm here in Houston, and there is the incredible dichotomy between severe depression and extreme optimism.
Depression, because the damage is just unfathomable. Pictures and videos on your computers and television can't begin to describe the horrors. What you see is just a fraction of the unmeasurable damage. Not an inch of the fourth largest city in America has been spared. And that's just Houston. The catastrophe spreads in every direction of Houston by as much as 100 miles, except to the east, and that is now feeling Harvey's wrath. Billions and billions and billions of dollars in damage and easily over 100,000 in displaced residents. Just heartbreaking to live through and I don't ever want to do it again.
But, extreme optimism, because of the spirit of not just Houstonians, but people from other cities responding with help of boats, tractors, semi-trailers, large military trucks. A mile-long line of residents with boats from Louisiana (the "Cajun Navy") coming in to help anyone in need. Residents going through their neighborhoods just making sure their neighbors were safe and offering to shelter those that needed help. People opening homes to those they don't even know on the other side of the city impacted.
When I saw all the boats coming in to the city, I couldn't help but think we had our own personal Dunkirk. Perhaps there will be those who want to make a movie about it in the future, but they'll never be able to convey the madness of what we've experienced here.
As for me, I'm okay. Some water in the home is nothing compared to what others have experience. I'm safe and I'm dry and I have food and electricity and I don't smell so awful. So I'm thankful, and I appreciate the kind words and your thinking of all of us down here.
I'm fine - I don't need anything, but there are so many more that do. If you want to know what you can do to help those down here, you can donate to the American Red Cross -- the best damn disaster response team in the world. You can text HARVEY to 90999 to make a $10 donation for those in need.
Peace and love from Houston, Gary |
