11 years and 22 films building up  to the most Epic finale in cinema history and Game of Thrones, surely the most Epic TV show in history.


They've both been around for so long they're practically a part of life. It's going to be like losing a friend.  

Will miss GOTs.that's for sure!  

Never watched either of them. I'm actually working on a short film that will be starring one of the actors from Game of Thrones. Well, according to IMDb he acted in 12 episodes during 2016 - as a character called, Kevan Lannister. So you'd probably have to be a real fan to remember.

There are still some MCU movies planned.

And with the success of GOT you just know they are not going to let it die - there will be spin off after spin off

Just finished episode 3, holy shit!

There are GoT spin-offs in the pipeline and the lots of Marvel universe films and TV series to come.

Plus, there are loads of amazing fantasy (and sci-fi) book series out there which would make amazing TV shows. With GoT being such a success I'm hoping this opens the doors for these to be adapted. Although, a great set of books doesn't guarantee great shows - take the Shannara TV series, for example, that was dire!

If you want something new but epic to watch, I recommend The Expanse. It was on Netflix, now I think the next season is on Amazon. It's based on a series of books and is complex like GoT, awesome storylines & characters, plus the production quality is incredible.

YES!! I started a thread about a year or so ago about the Expanse but, being the ultimate thread killer, not a single comment. I found the three season story arc top notch.

Love GOT and will miss it.

Bought the book series for GOT, which I would need to force myself to read. lol.

Haven't gotten a chance to see the Avengers. Hopefully the weekend.

It focuses on the first encounters with the White Walkers and the events that lead to The Wall being built. It stars Naomi Watts.

The Expanse is fantastic. And like GOT it makes you care for characters on all sides.

I watched a little bit of GoT earlier and it looks OK. I had to turn it off though because my kids were around - I got to the part where a naked girl was giving a dwarf a blow job.

I may revisit it if I get time. I prefer shorter things because I like to spend most of my time writing. 8 seasons is a killer.

Read 4 of the GOT books and loved them but bailed out halfway through the fifth one as it got boring  never watched the show as I don’t watch tv or Netflix or movies lol  gaming is much better!

The book Carrion Comfort by Dan Simmons needs to be done as a mini series   I loaned it to a workmate and he agrees.

I've been watching GOT since episode 1 aired in 2011. I was waiting like 2 years for this show, ever since I heard it was in development. Interesting enough, I'm not a big fan. I still watch it though, mainly to finish it. I do find Jon Snow very irritating. The casting for that character is especially horrific to me. I just can't take that guy seriously. Who thought it was a good idea to cast a short guy, who looks like a confused boy with a fat face and no masculine features as the hero?

On topic, these things are just entertainment, life will go on. Other things will come.

I find it interesting how TV Shows have become such a large part of people's life post-2010. Most of the people ages 20-35 I know, binge watch TV shows all the time and they're a significant part of their lives. I know couples whose main activity is watching TV shows together. I do feel like TV shows have lost a bit of steam in the past year or two and are slightly dwindling in popularity. There seemed to be an explosion of content a few years back. I dunno if the same intensity has maintained.

Same here. I gave it another try again today while on the f'n treadmill. I was struggling to get through the first episode. It was one of the longest sessions ever. It seemed it would never end. I will finish it though and try to get to the next episode since 90% of the people on the planet seem to love it.  

I really, really disliked GOTs in the beginning. It seemed gratuitous with its sex and violence and over the top scenarios. Husband kept watching it so I begrudgingly hopped on the bandwagon again and was soon converted. There's still plenty that made me groan and roll my eyes but the good soon outweighed the bad. I'm not a Fantasy genre fan and if you'd told me I would be a fan of something with dragons featuring prominently I would have told you to go jump in the lake.

You only need look at the YouTube videos of his 'death' and then rebirth to see his popularity.

Of course seeing him on talk shows sans the long hair and armour I gotta admit he is more diminutive than on the big screen.

Can't wait to watch the last season!

The thing is that it's not about how good they are, it's the fact they've been cultural events.

People discussing what will happen week after week, year on year. Texts between friends, discussions while you're having your hair cut, at work etc

Game of Thrones may well be the last ever show that people wait for a specific time each week with baited breath. Online box sets can't have the same appeal as they can't be watched at the same time by everybody... There is no time to discuss, for the culture to build up, for fan theories etc Maybe between seasons , but it's not the same.

Watching it after the event is sort of missing the point. It was all the excitement of what might /is going to happen that made it such a great ten years. The imagination, the anticipation, the possibilities. All the stuff that doesn't make it into the actual product. That was the real magic.

I know what you mean though. I can remember when the same thing was going on when Dallas was on back in the stoneage. It was all everyone talked about. Every week. What would happened next and who did what to whom. The anticipation of the next episode was unreal and we all felt the same way. Of course back then, in Sweden at least, we only had two channels, lol, but still.    

Fans are the reason we have to suffer these countless franchises.

I think the thing to take from it is how it uses all the typical clichï¿¿..zombies, dragons, prophecies etc and luxuriates in all those fantasy tropes, whilst at the same time subverting them.

I agree. Certain aspects of the show have been safer and a tad more predictable since they went off the books. They are more focused on cinematics and other aspects TV shows resort to. I think when the final books come out (if they ever do lol) then there will be some surprises, shocks and richer, more satisfying character/story conclusions.

What defined the series was how anyone could die, whether they were a POV character, or not. Now, there are certain characters wearing full "plot armour"...miraculously kept alive because they are needed for future plot events. It' not quite disappointing, but still noticeable compared to what went before.

You can like or dislike a show/movie, but you have to respect something that's captivated so many people's imagination.

I don't like those Harry Potter movies or books, but I know a ton of people whose childhood has been defined by those things. So, you have to respect that. That someone made something that connected with so many people.

I think GOT had a lot more interesting directions it could have gone in, as I find a lot of the supporting characters far more interesting than the main/hero ones. But most people don't think the way I do, or crave the same thing. Most want a surogate hero, so they can live the story through someone. And, I have to respect that.

Harry Potter is The Worst Witch. GoT is Lord of the Rings. There are probably a number of similar stories. They're just stories... to be briefly entertained by before moving onto the next one.

Making them last over twelve hours takes padding... lots and lots of padding. Let alone 8 series worth. It's obviously way too much and is churned out with massive PR behind it to keep the current fans and gain new ones. You choose to jump on and then choose to stay even when shit gets so weak it shouldn't be watchable.

I also don't understand how people can watch soaps. They talk about those and text each other, etc... I just find it mindless. People are entertained by even the weakest drama.

The original pitch for Lord of the Rings was for two movies because it's basically 2.5 books (the third book has a lot of appendices). Eventually, they decided to shift some content around and make it three movies. Fine. Can't even call it padded because they skipped over parts like Tom Bombadil and the Scourging of the Shire.

Then they took the children's story The Hobbit and made that into a trilogy. Oh, come on! So... much... padding... (At the time I was curious how they'd handle the fact that Mirkwood Elves including Legolas were bad guys in The Hobbit. Not a fan of how it turned out.)

I'm one of the few mammals on Earth who hasn't been following GOT. I'll take my fantasy without the gratuitous sex and violence, thank you.

Soaps are the worst!! I have banned them in my house.

But yea, my sisters discuss them all the time - they also LOVE reading about what happens BEFORE watching it - WTF is the point in that?

Anyway - I really like it when TV series end while they are still entertaining, instead of dragging them out to boredom. GOT has been going a long time, but there aren't that many episodes really (73 over 8 seasons compared to Walking Dead which has 131 over 9 seasons) - Plus GOT is telling a lot more stories in those episodes than Walking Dead is.

So, I am glad GOT is ending while I still like it instead of carrying on until I hate it - like Walking Dead which I can't watch anymore.

What amazes me is how much people watch entertainment. I used to say, I no longer watch sports because life is short and I rather live my life than sit on a couch and watch other people live their dream. I'm starting to feel the same about TV and movie watching. I can't believe how much people are watching. Binge watch this. Binge watch that. And, there's an endless supply of entertainment too. My guess is that in the future when VR becomes really good, we're all just going to stay home and live our lives in a virtual world when in reality, we never even leave our homes. Fuck that. I rather be the one that creates the material, makes some money and then go out and experience the real world myself.

Conversely, I think a large part of the reason these types of stories are successful is that real life is so disappointing for most people.

And then on the other hand, part of the reason life is so disappointing is because we present these stories and characters to the world.

People are taught that life should be like a fairytale and they have no way to handle the reality.

The evil characters were delightfully evil and incredibly well-casted.  Like the Sopranos, the writers had no qualms about killing them off periodically so you were always getting a very satisfactory comeuppance.

Just when you thought one of the heroes would be their for the series (e.g., Ned Stark) - they get offed (the Red Wedding was a mind-blower). The writers did a great job of introducing new heroes as the saga continued.

Production values absolutely top-notch.

I am not a fantasy fan, but I thought this series was great.  I do recommend watching with the closed caption on - it helps the clarity given the accents and odd names.

I think it's all a matter of expectations. Season 7 was really disappointing for me, especially the last two episodes. After that, the Battle of Winterfell didn't seem so bad.
