So, there are two basic genre's I have not written features in - Horror and Sci-fi.  I enjoy Sci-fi films but for me personally always thought there was too much research/world building to write in that genre. I disliked horror films as a taste issue so never bothered to write one.

So this year one of the things I said I would do is to write a feature in one of these genre's. I picked horror thinking that's got to be easier than Rom-com, dramas - things that I like.

Eff no! What an ass ache.  My hat is now off to horror writers. This may be the toughest feature I've tried to write - I'm like 30 pages in and running on fumes. Incredibly tough to keep the tension ramping up. Anyway - just wanted to say I always underestimated this genre.

Now - back to work.

I think it also should be very hard to find an idea that’s new or deviates sufficiently from the old ones. I mean besides writing it and all the stuff that comes after.

But good luck Dave!

Wow Dave! I'm sure you can pull it off. Main thing in horror that many writers forget is ambience and sound. They play a HUGE part. Use it. Milk it.

Good Luck! Hope I get to read it some day.

Dave, I'm assuming you meant genres you haven't tackled - feature length?
I love SciFi and horror - reading and watching, and I try to write them - unsuccessfully, so far. My brain naturally gravitates to comedy, drama, romcom which can be annoying.

Good luck. Although, I'm sure you'll equip yourself well.

Yes. Feature - have not tackled. (typo)

Horror is my favorite genre, and the one I primarily write in. If I might share my perspective as a lifelong genre fan, the best horror stories, in my opinion, are those which take the time to let us get to know their characters before throwing them into harm's way. You'll find it's much easier to generate suspense and tension if you've created characters we don't want to see get hurt.
