Impressive number of entries! Far less horror than I expected. And is that a western I see!?

Thanks for putting this together, Rene and Don.

Wow, what a great turnout! Thanks for getting the up so quickly, Don.

All links are working with the correct scripts. If you notice anything off, please let Don know ASAP.

Everyone should aim to leave reviews on at least half of the entries. If we all do that, there are plenty of reviews for everyone.

And remember, there are some new people here, so if you see something that's greener than usual be encouraging in your constructive feedback.

I have no idea who wrote what. I'll be leaving reviews too.

Good morning, as I’m new here I have a couple of quick questions.
Is there a time limit on reviewing and scoring the scripts?
Should feedback be restricted to only one remark or is it feasible to make multiple points?

I’ll be honest in my opinions so please be as honest as you can with mine, it’s the only way I’ll learn, I’m a big lad, I can take it 😃

Good luck to everyone and kudos to you all for having the guts to submit your entry.

Owen, from memory I think Don said the scoresheet will be emailed around the 31st so you'll have about a week to read. Just read as many as you can - some read and comment on them all, some don't. Your best effort is all that's expected.

Make as many points as you like, i.e., what worked, what didn't, dialogue, story, characters, did it meet challenge parameters etc. It's up to you.

People will be honest, don't worry about that. Anonymity tends to elicit only candid reviews, as you'll see.

Be careful not to reveal any clues as to your script. Don't answer your critics in any way - not until the reveal.

33!

That's either a lot of multiple submissions or some of the people who weren't entering changed their minds - guess we'll see.

Solid turnout - looks like a weekend of reading ahead.  First OWC I've been able to enter for a while now.

Interesting mix - thought there would be more horror than sci-fi so that's a surprise.  Even a couple of Viking sagas by the looks of it.

Getting a shovel vibe from the loglines - I'm predicting lots of shallow graves and death by shovel to the face.

Happy reading all.

A nice turnout! Just read and reviewed the first one but I'm out most of today. I will attempt to get through them all it may take me a few days though.

I like the idea of the new scoring system - the only downer is that first script I read had no dialogue. It feels a bit...unfair not being able to award potentially 5 points simply because the writer chose not to include dialogue! Writing without dialogue is tricky and requires skill but here it means less points!

I think if there are scripts without dialogue then they should be scored on how effective the script is without it.

E.g. nice idea, no dialogue, but didn't work very well 2/5... nice idea, no dialogue, and writer does a great job without it 5/5.

Just a thought, and no, mine has dialogue

That's a good idea, Anthony.

Penalty should not apply if it's done well sans dialogue.

Seeing this, I'm glad I did not enter.  I hate scoring like this, to be honest.  Most seem to like it, though, so as usual, I'm alone on my island or mountaintop.

I will be reading and commenting on all, but not scoring.

Great turnout!  Good luck to all.

*****Just another kind reminderto those of you entering your first OWC:*****

This is an anonymous challenge.

Do not reveal any clues as to your script.

Do not respond or answer your critics in any way - not until the reveal.

** Meant to add: Yes, you can review your own script (or not) to deflect guesses, but make sure you're clever and subtle about it.

I done that in the past.I was both clever and subtle. It still backfired, as I pointed out some of my errors, and my attempt at subtext.

So what happened?

Ha! All the comments after pointed out the same stuff, having been unaware of it until I pointed it out Happened at least three times. After that, I just put a lid on it and only commented on my work until after the reveals. Imean. y'know, what are you going to say reviewing yourself? Right! We are tempted to give ourselves delusions of grandeur!
Which,of course, gives the farm away.

So y'know the old saying.

I just go the modest route. Something like:

A perfect blending of Sorkin and Taritino. How is this writer expecting a crappy mug when an Oscar should be in order.

Me thinks that you can almost say anything and not be revealed other than when you respond to issues raised by other reviewers.

EXACTLY!  If you really like what you wrote, and you wrote it well, go all in...or at least point out an issue that is AMAZINGLY WELL DONE!!!.

If you hated what you wrote and you know it's terrible and embarrassing...TRASH IT!  Trust me, I've done this to myself and I should have been much meaner.

If you comment on every script except your own, some peeps will actually know.

I can say with complete honesty that my entry will not receive a SINGLE NEGATIVE COMMENT...because...well...uh...I didn't enter one.

Could easily be my best OWC!

Whew - got through 20 - taking a rest.

Already got a few favorites.

The challenge parameters certainly made the reads easier - a lot more varied concepts here. Kept it interesting.

Damn good turnout - will start reading tomorrow but very little chance of getting to read them all. Apologies to those I don't get to read.

Having a quick skim through the comments, the quality seems pretty high too

Another reminder for those not in the loop - I've noticed a few queries...

A voting ballot/ link will be emailed to you, around the 31st, with directions on scoring.

Least that's the way it's usually done and Don or Rene can correct me if I'm wrong.

And again, sorry to sound like a broken record but...no outing yourselves in the meantime.

Okay - done. Although there are two or three I need to go back and re-read. My initial observations:

Kudos to Rene on the requirements. Good job, mate.

I think that open genre really is a gift to the readers. That is well as the multiple options of props. It was refreshing to be able to go from story A to story B, etc and see something totally different. Reading these 33 scripts seemed like reading 10 from a regular OWC - flew by.

Kudos to the writers for having several scripts in different cultures and time periods - it was interesting to read how the writers wrote to set the tone of something other than modern day, Western civilization. Most succeeded in that regard.

As always - many nailed the requirements and several - well kind of did. errg - okay, I'll just throw in a syringe, snake of shovel here rather than it being instrumental to the story. But - I don't think there are any I am going to give a N to any submission.

I have a few favorites - interesting to see how they will do.

Good stuff.

As usual,

Normally I don’t like open genre. That’s just me. I like being required to write something of a specific genre, that way I might be forced to write in a genre I’m not comfortable with, say sci-fi. But here I didn’t mind because of the “s” requirements. It worked very well for me anyway. Not my script, but me.

Yes closed genre is a challenge for writers - I was commenting from a readers POV - nice to get varied stories

That was the hope with the parameters of the challenge, to have restrictions but also the flexibility to come up with a variety of stories. I'm glad it seems to have paid off. I'm also enjoying the reads, and the quality of the scripts.

Dave wrote all the good ones.

I jest, but I wonder how many multiple entries there were. Rene?

Really enjoying reading my way through. Starting as always with those with the lowest number of reads. I think it's a bit unfortunate that some scripts, currently, have six reviews and others have twelve. Seems like a lot of beginners' scripts to offer feedback on -- are we really all that desperate to read yet more torture porn instead?

Not a fan of the scoring system. Story, characters, dialogue etc. do not cleanly separate out as skills that writers can work on independent of one another, so I don't think it's that useful to grade along these lines.

Very glad to finally be back on one of these again. Good turnout, good scripts, good feedback -- and all starting out from a clever challenge with well-chosen parameters.

Also: man, a LOT of people went with the shovel, eh?

Ok, all done.  What's left is to tally our votes.  Congrats to all those who participated.  Some great writing on display here.  Big shout out to Don and ReneC for a great challenge. Oh, and to anyone behind the scenes.

I for sure thought there were some double entries! some people have incredibly similar styles.
A lot of writers in this one, well done Rene for attracting them in with the parameters.

How are everyone's entries doing? (without giving yourself away)

I think mine will miss out on the "honourable mentions" but this is the most well-received OWC entry of mine so I am pretty damn chuffed so far

I was convinced that at least one writer submitted two, if not three, entries. I'm shocked at how good some of the entries are this round. Congrats to many writers and big kudos if the winner is new to SS. Quite the feat.

Now, as to how mine is doing? Typical. Some stupid mistakes and thoughts/ideas in my head not really making it to the page for readers to 'get it'. I finally have formatting nailed, now it's time to hone the rest of it. A re-write or two will definitely be in order.

Finished reading every entry and voted on them before I go back to work tomorrow. Wouldn't have the time to do it in the next few days so just blasted my way through them today.
Good luck to everyone.
I've had some really good replies and lots of pointers and tips to improve upon.
No aspirations about the scoring but the feedback has been invaluable.

Hey Owen, I'm just curious...you say you read and commented on every script, but you only have 16 comments in total under your name.  There were 33 entries.

What am I missing here?

Oh...I see.

Comments are King, bro.  They keep things interesting...especially on these OWCs.  Peeps love to check and see if their entry got any new reads (and comments).

Up to you how you play, but I'd highly recommend leaving comments, so peeps know you actually read their script, and they know how you felt about it.

Yes, and you're not the only one who feels the notes are invaluable. Even if you feel you're a rookie or unqualified to give notes to perhaps veteran writers, you are a member of an audience and we all want to know what the audience thinks and feels about our scripts. Even saying what you like about a script is helpful.

When I was a rookie I was encouraged by the community to comment on scripts, I didn't have a lot to offer on formatting but as writers, we all have valid opinions on story, characters, structure and the like... jump on in Owen.

So why in the world wouldn't you exchange the same courtesy that you consider invaluable? Even if you don't feel you're experienced enough to offer advice, you felt you were experienced enough to use the scoring system. It may mean reading less entries but take the time others are taking to leave a review.

You don't want to be known as someone who enjoys the benefits but doesn't reciprocate. Oh wait...I think this may be my ex-husband.

Mine is receiving less than favourable comments. Mostly from people complaining about how I don't explain certain things. Although they do say that the writing is more or less good, which means I just have to sit down and think of more relatable stories.

It depends on what or who needs explaining,
Over-explaining is actually more of a problem.

Oh, and one does not always have to relate to stories.  Characters and character situations have to be to some extent. Characters also don't need over-explaining.

Wow, quite a few very impressive scripts this time round and an array of genres. I can’t vote but these scripts are better than just 5’s. Some are so out of the box and beautifully written and polished and all. Great job, Rene.

I'm going to have to apologise about not being able to read and review many of the entries. I've been tapped to be a script supervisor on a short film shoot all next week and I'm racing to catch up with the prep work.

Have no fear about the scoring though. I'm already laying the groundwork for calculating the scores. Once Don has a chance to pass them along to me I should be able to do a quick turnaround. The only trick is timing, we start shooting on Saturday and go until midnight. I'll post them as soon as I'm able to.

I'm sure there are some here with equally, if not more, busy lives who have still managed to read them all.

Script Supervisor on a short doesn't strike me as something that would take up too much time. It sounds like a weak excuse to get out of reading 33 entries to me.

I think I’ve read them all, but I keep on thinking I’ve read them all and then I spot one I haven’t so I’ll wait until tomorrow to vote just in case.

Mine is actually getting better reviews than I thought it would. It won’t win but I’m very pleased with how it has been received so far and I’ve got some ideas for a 2nd draft thanks to the feedback.

My apologies to all the writers of scripts I didn't get to, but I'm all done here.

The BS of deleting my posts over and over really pisses me off.  There's a Mod who really likes her power and loves to wield it.

Have fun.  Kid out.

Ditto on what Zack and Darren day and I don’t think any script is worthy of that much sacrifice. Unless you simply tired of reading.

I'm tired of being deleted.

It's not on 1 script, it's on numerous threads, and I'm just tired of it.

Carry on, folks, and thanks to Zack, DJS, and Kham here.

That's not cool. It's beyond censorship. Bring it to Don's attention, we can't have mods abusing their power just because they don't like something or someone.

Hmm.

Jeff, I think it is important to keep in my mind that the comments deleted had nothing to do with a script review.  From my recollection every single comment related to the actual script was retained on the thread. I can't speak for Libby of course, but from my read this is what happened.

A writer posts a script. It is a bit controversial because of the nature of the story. The first ten or so comments deal directly with the script and then the thread blows up with a back and forth between peeps on what constitutes torture porn. Not really fair to a writer to have a thread that is ostensibly dedicated to a review of his script turn into something different. So Libby - as a moderator - post this.

Quoted Text
I suggest taking this to a another thread if you want to further debate what writers should write, the definition of torture porn etc.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion.

This particular thread should concentrate on script reviews only.

Okay - so that was a nice way of saying please concentrate on the review of the script.

Well, of course what immediately happens after that is a dozen posts on whether a particular writer's comments on all of the scripts were substantial enough blowing up the thread once again and peppering it with comments that had nothing to do with the script - again, if you are the writer of that script - would you want your review thread populated with a ton of unrelated comments??? I wouldn't.

So, after asking for reviewers to focus on the script and then having that request being totally ignored - some comments not related to the script were deleted. I agree with that action. But add to that the fact that moderators here are unpaid trying to moderate this site while there regular life goes on - even if Libby made a mistake - which I don't think she did - really? There is a need to call it out like this??

I'm not aware of comments being deleted on other threads - please let me know if I am missing something.

Anyway - I appreciate you commenting on the scripts you did even though you didn't enter.  That was nice of you to spend the effort.

I'm sure there are some here with equally, if not more, busy lives who have still managed to read them all.

Script Supervisor on a short doesn't strike me as something that would take up too much time. It sounds like a weak excuse to get out of reading 33 entries to me.

I know, and script supervisor is my official role there, but I do much more than that. What's keeping me busy now is getting my wife and kids prepped for me not being home for a week when it wasn't expected, wrapping up a couple of consultations earlier than expected, and getting my job covered.

Besides, I have no pony in this race. My job was to provide a challenge and manage it, and I'm doing that.

Correct - you had no obligation to review any script. What you did review was above and beyond.

I would put a "whoa" on the rogue mod unless you are aware of details that we are not. Just PM Libby to find out what happened then reach a conclusion. My opinion anyway.

Again - thanks for all the work on this challenge

Scores submitted - I said at the start I probably wouldn't have the chance to read many, but the lure of reading "just 1 more" was too strong lol. Now I have shit loads of studying to catch up on

Apologies for the brevity of some of my comments, as I said, not a lot of time - so some comments suffered so I could get round to them all. Not that anyone gives a hoot about my opinion, but feel free to PM me if anyone wants further notes - I can get round to it at some point.

Random musings;

- Quality was generally high, can't hazard a guess as who will come out with "writers choice"
- Criteria. IMO, A lot of you are far too accommodating with marking entries as criteria met (based on comments). Seems unfair on those entries who actually bothered to incorporate the criteria.
- Newbies! this is for you - don't be afraid to leave your thoughts. You don't have to be a competent writer to be able to say what you liked/disliked about a story.
- Newbies! this is also for you. It can be hard to read comments on your own script subjectively. Stalk the reviewers who have left you comments, check out the comments they leave on other entries (and read the entry itself) -  gives you a good overview of the reviewer, which ones whose opinion you value more (Also pay attention to trends, there usually isn't smoke without fire)
- Too many combinations of Snow/Storm/Shovel - a snowstorm, ticking two boxes at once, come on guys lol
- You guys put my imagination to shame! seriously, where do you lot come up with this stuff?
- Thanks for not writing 33 horrors.

As always, thanks to Don and Rene for hosting - It's been a blast. Once again you have all knocked me down a peg with the quality of your work - One day I'll be up there with ya

As for the deleted posts, I wasn't online to catch what happened and it's not the way I would have handled it, but that thread is getting really carried away. Take it up in a dedicated thread if you really want the discussion.

Nice post. Good thoughts there. I like to see a challenge one day that rather than Y/N on requirements - you gave a 1-5 on the degree to which the requirements played a role in the story. That's just me though.

Yeah, I would prefer that to the Y/N - But I have already got to keep track of so many 1-5's and a 1-10 lol

I would have handled it exactly how it was handled.  What you saw was the torture porn debate and how that blew up the thread and a polite request from Libby to move it to a different thread. ALL of the comments have been retained in the thread related to the review of the script and the torture porn debate.

What you probably didn't see was a subsequent altogether different blow-up after Libby's request that started with one peep attacking the quality of another peeps comments on scripts in general thus blowing up the thread again on an entirely unrelated topic. Those comments were deleted.  The action was entirely appropriate IMO.

There was...and still is, as far as I know, a post (review) in which someone simply said, (and this is not a quote) the "writer" should take a sledgehammer to this script.

This comment brought about other comments, and IMO, were perfectly fine, but deleted.

This same someone posted on a different entry that it was well written.  I responded that it was not well written...as it's 100% obvious the script was far from well written, which was deleted.

Of course each and all can decide what to listen to, there's nothing wrong with a little friendly disagreeing on the threads.  Go back in history and you'll see all sorts of these little exchanges - they're quite entertaining, actually, as are most back and forths.

It's obviously not like that anymore, and I for one miss those days very much.  SS has lost lots of peeps who partook in these debates, and without such debates, it's quite dull, to be honest.

No big deal.  I'll back off and retreat to my island.

Yes - that was a comment from SPQR  regarding the script that was the subject of the thread. There is where the thread once again went off the rails with comments that had zero to do with the subject script. I would have done what Libby did (oops - I'm just assuming it was her - maybe someone else).

I can't comment on the second incident (the well written exchange) as I'm not familiar with it. On face value - and again without having seen it - a contrary comment - not well written - would have been fine by me.

Like you, I love the debates and exchanges here. They always yield the most interest. That being said, I don't like them when they are hijacking a thread dedicated to something else - in this case - a script. If I am the writer of Mayhem (I'm not) I would be pissed that a thread that is purportedly dedicated to a review of my script is being convoluted to discuss anything but - the last example being whether we believe a certain posters comments in general are up to snuff.

The point being - having friendly disagreements on the threads is fine - I think even encouraged. And yes - they are quite entertaining. But monitoring a thread for it's intended purpose doesn't derail that - just derails that on that thread.  And that is what the moderators are for.  And c'mon - how often does it ever happen? Just send a PM to whoever you think deleted you and ask for an explanation.

Dave, I think the point that Jeff is trying to make is that the "review" that SPQR gave is less of a review and more of an insult. I understand Jeff's frustration with this entire situation.

Zack is correct.  The post was not feedback that could be used by any writer.  It was a complete slam on both the writer and the script, yet it was not deleted.

Andy responded to that post, and I responded to Andy about the reviewer, yet all posts were deleted except the one that started the whole thing.

If I had posted the initial comment, I would have been deleted and I bet a bunch of peeps would also jump in and call me an arse.

This was Jeff's original post. Seems clear.

In terms of SQ comment on the thread, I can only guess that his was not deleted because it dealt with the script  at hand. Jeff's post dealt with SQ. Jeff was also pissed that several of his non SQ posts were deleted

Sorry for having been mostly absent lately, but I've been up to my ears in grandma stuff, lol.

I did delete one review from someone that simply said Excellent! Why? That is not a review and doesn't even prove that the script was read and does not offer the writer anything other than a weak pat on the back. We usually frown on such reviews. They can of course be okay if we know each other and such, but in an OWC, that doesn't cut it. I was going to delete a few more from the same "reviewer" that were simialr, but dirty diapers happend and...

- You guys put my imagination to shame! seriously, where do you lot come up with this stuff?

Possible answers:  8 of 10 peeps recently watched the film The Colour Of Space and were, like the family in the film, driven to madness and body horror. The other two involved an alcoholic beverage, extract or cough syrup.

As for myself, I dabble in a form of ESP, automatic writing, lucid dreaming and other paranormal activity.
Other than that, I recently watched Richard Stanley's The Colour Of Space
and drank half by bottle of  Leelanau  apple chill wine
I was already crazy.

- Thanks for not writing 33 horrors

True!
But DAMN the body count is still a wee bit high...
my peeps did not disappoint!

Voted! I did find the voting a bit confusing so I hope I've not done it wrong. The prose column, for example, I presume that is the overall quality of writing and not how much novel type prose is in the screenplay?

I have three favourites but I enjoyed reading all of these. Thanks to all who entered and took the time to write reviews.

Hey everyone,

I am very much new here and was wondering where I could vote? Read from some people they already did that.
I have not had time to go through all the scripts but there were definitely some great ones between the ones I did read.

Check your private messages (top left) - you should have had a message from Don with a link to the scorecard.

EDIT: Don't forget to DNS (did not score) those entries you didn't read, and your own entry

Read ‘em all, commented on most. I’m gonna vote later this evening, if I missed your script and you are simply jonesing for more comments, then hit me up via PM, otherwise, see you on the other side.

Not from me. I simply got too busy. I have not been able to keep up with posts at all this OWC. As far as those reviews you mentioned goes, those should be removed IMO since they are not reviews and not helpful to anyone. We always used to remove crap reviews like that.

Given that about 30 percent of reviewers were non participants,  this may be a record level review total.

Considering the deadline for voting is almost over, it does seem a poor turnout at present. There are a couple who like to post their reviews late, so even with adding those, it seems most scripts will be shy of 13 reviews. If we count the non-participant reviewers, like Dave, Libby, Warren, and Jeff, then it seems less than half of the participants reviewed the scripts. That's pretty poor. Nobody can really complain about reading scripts that are the same as the parameters made for some diverse stories.

Does seem like a poor review turnout given 33 writers are in this.

Will be interesting to find out who these writers are.

Add Kham to the list of reviewers who didn't enter a script - thanks to all of those who reviewed without having a horse in the race, really propped up the review count.

None according to Rene - which makes it worse, 33 different writers (although some styles are so similar I'm convinced someone entered multiple under different names)

Just now finished reading and voting. I've only reviewed 8 so far. (Was afraid I wouldn't make the deadline, and decided reading/voting was more important for now.)

In reading the comments, most of my notes would be/are repetitive. Not sure what to do about that. I hate just spouting the same advice that 6 other people have already given effectively.

And, I hate saying things like "as others have said." I definitely think it helps to do that a few times... let's the writer know there's a consensus... but, after it's been repeated a handful of times, the note feels like piling on.

It's one of the downsides of having to do most of my reading later in the week.

I'm running into the same issue. To read as many of these as I can, I'm gonna start being a bit shorter with my reviews. If anyone would like more in-depth notes after the OWC is finished, PM me.

That was my comment. Frankly, I could give a shit if it were deleted or not. But the writer might as if was a compliment on his/her script.

I'd also suggest before you go to favoritism,  you look at things in context. I have read and commented on nearly 100% of the entries in OWCs since 2014 regardless of whether or not I was an entrant.  Sometimes one simple comment does not mean it is a comment without merit.
Sometimes it just means - bravo, well done - nothing to add. Personally I think it's a silly exercise to delete on line comments - but again, no sweat off my back.

I know it was you, your name's beside the comment. I couldn't care less either, neither of the scripts were mine.

I was merely pointing out, that if a Mod is going to call someone out for doing something they believe to be lax behavior, then call everyone out on it, not just one member. And, no... I didn't know you were not in this OWC, so maybe that does make you exempt.

Clarification - I am in this OWC (Didn't say I wasn't).

In terms of this:

I'll try to clarify my point again - my feeling is that there should be a bias in favor of any member, whether they be a new one, old one, loved one, hated one et al that has a history of posting comments on threads that are more than one-liners/worders.

You for instance are relatively new to the site. I found your comments to be insightful, thoughtful and generally indicative of the fact that you carefully read the script. Had you posted a one liner - I loved it - or something like on a particular script, I wouldn't want it deleted because I am biased towards you given your demonstrated dedication to making genuine comments. So my bias would be that - hmm - that's what Gum must really think. i.e., sometimes bias is good (or is that greed?

There is no favoritism. But, if Dave comments on a script with a simple Excellent, the regulars here will know that he thought the script was excellent. How do we know this? He's been around here for several years and we know that he's not only one of the best writers here, but also one of the most helpful reviewers. When a new member or a non regular shows up for an OWC comp and has only one word or one sentence reviews, that doesn't cut it. Why? This person will be voting and there's no evidence this person even read any of the scripts. That's not favoritism, it's just asking the new/non regular reviewer to do a little better. Show us you actually read the script.

Btw, some people want the members of the Academy to prove that they have actually watched the movies they are voting on...

Oh, BTW… If you search posts by members, you’ll find my first post on December 8th, 2013, 1:26am…

I know I haven’t been around since the beginning of the site, and I may not comment as much as you, but I have been through quite a few OWC’s myself. There’s always some type of back and forth banter between members; I think it’s the only way to truly resolve issues from popping up in future challenges.

.

The misconception is that entrants have to comment on every entry. All that's required is a fair amount, I read them all, but I didn't comment on all of them. I'd say I commented on a little more than half, give or take. Most of the time, like you, I felt that my comments would be repeating what others have said.

I debated leaving a comment on one of the last scripts I read, simply because my major nitpick was the title page with two to three fancy fonts (there were a few scripts like this, actually) but other than that, I really didn't have anything new to add, pro or con. I guess I could go back and write "Hey, folks, what's up with that eyesore of a title page' or 'how come you didn't turn off your CONTINUEDS footers" (yeah, I seen a little too much of that, too) but if that's all...and if others before me have pointed it out, should I sing with the choir?

'all the deleted posts'?
That's news to me... I do sleep six to seven hours a night though.

Yesterday I came under fire (unreasonably) for deleting a couple of unnecessary comments not even related to a specific thread.

All up I've deleted three comments during the OWC, and two additional comments from a couple of Newbs who outed themselves prematurely.

Reviews overall have been positive, helpful and constructive.

From my POV, I try always to be measured and considered in my approach before deleting anything, but if it crosses the line of respect for fellow writers and their scripts, involves personal jibes, put downs, derogatory disrespectful remarks with nothing constructive to add - that's not cool in my book.

Here's the link to the SS guidelines thread.

Paul, to each his own. For me, I don't read the comments before the review and I write them as I read.  Just one exception - obvious newbie scripts - if I am a page and there's a dozen problems I'll stop and check the comments - if folks already got the gist of the format/typo issues I'll probably not waste time repeating those.

But in general, for me as a receiver of comments, I think repetitive comments have their own value. I'm pretty stubborn-headed, but when I see that several peeps have the same issue/comment it makes me evaluate it even more seriously - so I appreciate repeats - that may be just me - maybe some writers hate them.

The votes are being tallied. Feel free to start guessing who wrote what.

But no outing yourself if someone guesses correctly!

Great job, Rene.

I am shocked at how few comments there were given the broadness of the criteria. Going in I would have predicted this to be one of the most highly read OWCs ever - just such a wide variety of scripts/stories.

If you take the non-participants out, probably about 14 average per script.. eeesh.

Out of morbid curiosity, would like to know how many people voted - is that an easy tally for you to do? No big deal - just looking to see if there is a wide disparity between voting # and commenting #.

I read 22. I guess knowing my time was limited this week I shouldn't have entered. Will take that under consideration next time.

I don't have any idea who wrote what but I've taken note of a few I thought had a similar writing style and I'm super curious to know who the writer or writers are.

22/33 seems like a reasonable number to have read and reviewed - nothing to worry about there.

It's those who read very little or none.

I swear, if a certain person has entered this one and not reviewed -again! - I'm boycotting future OWC until they are banned lol

No idea who wrote what - I thought I spotted Marks and Zacks but I can't remember which ones they are now

Yeah, definitely a little variety this go round.  No two stories have were exactly alike, some good, some not so good. But we’re all about the learning here, so any writers feeling discouraged absolutely shouldn’t be.

I’ve no idea who wrote what. Certain people I can pick out but with the volume it was difficult to tell.

Look forward to the reveal. Good job everyone.

I chose, because of my reviewing style, to post my reviews after the voting deadline. This way, even if you got a bad review from me, you can be assured that it will not have influenced the voting at all. So, I should be hated less.

My favourite script was probably Jack and the Beanstalk, partly due to its creativity.

Maybe we should mark on creativity/originality too. It seems an important factor. Some of the scripts here really lacked in that department. There's nothing wrong with giving us more of the same, but each story should have something that makes it stand out from the others. The best stories always have that little extra spark of creativity. They feel new.

Agree with this - there were a couple, that although I had some problems with the other criteria, I thought the premise itself was unique.

I've seen the person in question lurking on the boards the past few days. Taking that as a sign that they did enter.

I have Matthew Taylor or Mark Renshaw for Jack and the Beanstalk. Could be Dave, possibly. I'm interested to know that one as whoever it is is a very creative and smart storyteller.

PK or Dave for Loyal? I initially thought Britman for this one but it seems to be a U.S. writer unless they were being crafty - 'dumbass', for example.

Amazing challenge. Best wishes to you, Rene.

I couldn’t review them all this time, merely 18. Sorry for that. My laptop crashed and I needed a new set-up. As an esl speaker I need half an hour for one script read and review, minimum, more like 45 min- which is no excuse of course. Most times I complain about the short reading period, not this time, because I couldn’t give a sure commitment that I would be able to read the rest with some additional days given.

I hope it’s okay because I also like to participate when not in.

I wrote my own take in two and a half hours, which is insane for me. As usual, a lot said about it that it’s badly written, and an opposite lot said it is good writing up to very good.
Every time it’s like that.

Ps: I think Gum is Canis - great reviews Gum

Mayhem is a good script, no doubt. But it’s political.

The script cannot say ‘I’m apolitical’ while those basta*** are out there. And they are.
The script imo has to be stronger.

Hey guys,

I'm sorry. I only read about 4 or 5 scripts. I'm usually good on reviews, and I have no idea why my posts say I've only commented a hundred times 'cause I used to be SUPER active like 5 years ago, but...

Cue the violins.

Between the start of the week, I had a baby and I got laid off of work. Life has been crazy... I wanted to read them all, but I couldn't. I'm really sorry.

Khamanna, no Draugr isn't mine. But I'm about to read it to see what you think of me.

My reviews have been polarizing. I feel good about the concept but I could have executed it in a more concise manner. I think I went too big for 10 pages.

Thanks for the compliment, I wish the Beanstalk one was mine, but alas, no.

I'm pleased with mine tho, based on comments I have improved my characters, dialogue and writing - but I focused so much on getting other elements right, I didn't actually focus on the story lol never mind, next OWC I'll find that balance.

Can't put my finger on which one you wrote though

Sorry, the only reason I thought it might be you is you wouldn't steer away from anything as hard-hitting as that but that's why I'm pants at guessing.

An no, the Beanstalk one wasn't mine. I do admire the creativity of that story but I'm not so much a fan of the execution. I do expect it to be up there in the top 5 though.

Could be. Mark seems to have that sense of humor. Could also have seen Steve Miles writing Draugr.

With a syringe as one of the criteria, I’m surprised no one wrote a script about a drug addict.

Nope, Draugr wasn't mine.

I had a couple of random guesses -

Steven Clarke for On the Beach

Mark for Devil's Kitchen

I would have pegged Irish Eyes for Customer Support but I don't think he entered?

And guessing Rick (Gum):for The Deadgoodizer.

The vote tallies are going to take a bit longer. Don's been pulled away from it, as soon as he can he'll get the tally to me.

I'll be shooting the rest of today, so expect the results tomorrow morning, assuming I have them by then. Apologies for the delay.

Frickin' Graveyard!

Very poor turnout in terms of feedback...yet again, and the complete lack once voting was complete is sad..  This may be the worst yet.

Sorry to Stevie for his Niners getting their arses handed to them in the 4th quarter.  There's always next year, but next year is my rams year to be back on top.

The low read/comment turnout is disappointing. It took me quite a bit of my free time to read all of the scripts and write comments for them. Actually, it even put me a little behind on my work, meaning I lose even more free time that will now be spent catching up. Not entirely the fault of the OWC though. I had a flu virus that put me down for several days.

I don't actually really care about the comments... only insomuch as they prove the script has been read, which means it will also be voted on fairly. A part of the problem may be the short amount of time we get to read. If the average person can read three scripts per day, then 33 scripts would take 11 days to read. I did feel a little bit of pressure to finish. For some, the idea of reading 33 scripts in 7 days could be so off-putting that they don't read any at all.

The only reason I was able to read all entries is that I can read them at work (Time I should have actually been working and studying) - If I wasn't able to do that, no way I could have read them all.

For such a short time to read/review, I would personally like a smaller page count limit - 5 pages seem manageable like we had in the writer's tournament.

Putting in any kind of measure or incentive to encourage entrants to participate more would seem to only increase the level of admin required - although I'm sure there would be some who wouldn't mind helping in some kind of volunteer role

I have off Tues and Wednesday and will finish reading and comment. Why not come up with an acceptable percentage a person needs to comment on in order for their entry to qualify to be voted on? Not too hard to figure out by just checking past posts. Release the results but put DQ next to the entries where writer didn't comment. Just a thought. And maybe put that writer on probation and ineligible for next OWC...so they can't just think they can enter to get comments.

And I don't mean Don doing any more work, but the person running that particular OWC would have to count the comments.

Makes sense to me.

It's just getting to be so normal that no one cares about reading and providing feedback.  Everyone is too busy, too new, too whatever.

Without peeps' time, SS wouldn't be what it is, and so many writers here wouldn't be anywhere near the writers they are now.

Gotta give a little!!!

The results have been posted!

I agree that there should be more time given to read. Maybe if it goes over 20 or 25 we add on a week? Just a suggestion for the future.

The low comment counts are disappointing too, but that's an ongoing debate.

Chiefs fan here.

I've always hated the idea that my gain is someone else's pain. That said, it's been 50 years... so, I'm not gonna feel too bad.

Wouldn't surprise me to see a rematch next year.

Yeah I saw that. My next OWC entry will be a period piece written entirely in lowercase and involve more than one character that doesn't get thrown into a zany, horrific situation.

So funny...

So, I received an E-Mail from someone, who tried to make it clear that he was an industry insider and accomplished screenwriter, asking about my dealings with a certain agency.

It was weird from the start, but I played along, as most of you...or some of you know that I enjoy a good back and forth.

His 3rd E-Mail stated that I was full of shit, and it got funnier from there.

Finally, my old brain kicked in and I wondered if this was SS based.  So, I checked out the writers from the last OWC, and sure enough, there he was.  I checked out his entry and saw that, yep, I commented on it, and although nothing mean spirited or incorrect, it wasn't a glowing review.

Wondering if anyone else received similar E-Mails.

Oh man...too ridiculous.

But yes, the guy in question hasn’t commented on any of the scripts. I still didn’t take my review down cos it’s not as glowing and I got surprised at the outcome here. Maybe he read and voted though and doesn’t know that we like to read the comments.

He told me over and over he doesn't give a shit about what peeps say...but that's not true.  He really does, but he doesn't like hearing anything negative about his scripts.

I'm torn on this, Jeff.

Yes - the individual should have not emailed bomb your personal account with profanity-laced dialogue related to your review. Little doubt about that.

However, if I ran the site, I wouldn't want an open war on any particular poster in the threads. I think the best course of action would be for you to PM Don or one of the moderators with the offensive emails and let them make a decision on what's best for the site. e.g., such as suspending the particular person from the site if they thought the emails were out of bounds.

Just my opinion. I could be dead wrong( Something similar happened to me. I just emailed the dude to eff off and blocked him. That worked).

I get you, but I don't block peeps, and I don't shy away from a confrontation.  I thought the E-Mails were done several times, but he just kept on coming back with very long winded E-Mails, and then I cracked, last night, schlammied, watching the Bones fight, and I went off on my own profanity laced E-Mail.

It's all fine, but there's nothing wrong with letting SS peeps know about this - from him or from me.  These types of things have no reason to be deleted...and back in the day...the good old days...these types of things were handled right here on the threads...where everyone can see exactly what's being said.

Haven't kept up with the OWC threads, so I'm a little lost to what's going on. If I'm getting this right, someone didn't like your review and is harassing you via email? And, this person didn't read any of the scripts? If that's the case, send Don a message and let him know what has transpired. My guess is that Don won't like the harassment part and might do something about it.

Pia, you know I'm not like that.  If someone wants to try and harass me, I can take care of myself just fine.  Yes, others could not and my be really offended...which is hwy I simply tried to tell or "warn" the SS peeps about this.

He and I had an argument, which was an argument for sure, but still on a certain civilized level - but he ended the conversation with truly offending me, as he said here, with f*** off and other words and blocking me immediately.

Well I just thought wow. And of course I never contacted him again…

Now he thinks, as he stated here, his measures did work and it's been okay.

So, please don't quote me to fulfill his choice :-)

Perhaps I should have just kept it within myself and not say a word here. But it's in my mind and when I see he adorns himself here with his actions…

He hasn't apologized for his behavior to this day.

Not sure why you want to go there Alex:- But okay.

1. You were not the poster I was referring to - this time. It was an individual that bombarded my PM as well as my personal script site. But...

2. Yes - I did block you and as I recall - said eff off.  Why?

You sent me a rather nasty email on June 20th. The threads were roaring about a writer who some believed had over-commented on their own script. It was an OWC that - I WAS NOT EVEN A PARTICIPANT in. You had a made a comment in regards to how you thought commenting on your script was inappropriate.  I responded:

Quoted Text
I see this sometimes and I think the writer is doing themselves a disservice. It becomes obvious, never sways anyone's position anyway.  It's a poor strategy.

Somehow - this benign comment set you off and caused you to send a rather volatile email to me the following day.  Complete with accusations that I along with several other members were somehow manipulating the process/tolerating poor behavior. You ended your love note with an eff bomb, accusing me of being the bodyguard for poor behavior and suggested that I needed to look myself in the mirror (PS - not because I am very handsome - but because you thought I was dishonest).

Hmm, I thought, man - that came out of left field - and sent you a response on what my thinking was. I thought we were done.

Nope - Fast forward a few weeks and you send me another email accusing me of deciding to review a script in the next phase of the OWC out of favoritism to the anonymous writer.

So - over the course of a month you sent me two emails basically accusing me of defending cheating and trying to cheat in an OWC that I didn't even participate in. That was an insult and a bridge too far for me - So, yeah - I had enough of that nonsense and blocked you.

If you'd like to go over the details of our exchanges publicly - open a new thread entitled Dave and Alex's great adventure and we can post the actual exchanges.

What this needs is a sensible person to come in and stir the pot a little. Otherwise, I can see this drama evaporating quickly.

Jokes aside, I'm honestly shocked that two people I like have clashed in this way. Alex, I know you're a little *overly* paranoid about cheating at the OWC, but I honestly don't think much of that goes on anymore. Even when it did, I'm sure it was only people letting others know which one was theirs so they didn't get slaughtered in a review by a friend. Certainly, I would never place Dave in that bracket, who is a man I judge to have pride in his integrity.

I read that before the Deleters, too and immediately  thought it was me you were talking about in those emails! I always think that and thats why my life is full of excitement and fun.

But joking aside I think I need to respond to all this but dont know how. Good tha Dustin knew

Thanks for the compliment - much appreciated.

Alex and I never had issues - at least not that I'm aware of - before the above exchanges started. I have no problem being accused of a whole host of things - but right or wrong, integrity is a hot button issue for me.

You are correct that this could probably get out of hand. That'd be a bad idea.

Alex - I have unblocked you if you want to discuss privately.

There were some hard words, Dave, yes. Then, you offended me, blocked me in the very next moment after you did offend me.

I'd never use that kind of behavior toward my next, others, or whomever…

Yeah…you unblocked me, in holy preacher manner now. Suddenly it's necessary right? Because my post made an impact, he needs to react bla bla

We're just over, Dave. An apology might do.

He hasn't apologized for his behavior to this day.

Sigh. I tried. Screw it.

It is you who owe me an apology.

Let's post the PMs.  I'm not embarrassed by anything I wrote.  How about you???  C'mon - let's open a thread with the PMs. If peeps think I owe you an apology after reading them, than I'll write one for all to see. Conversely, you write one if it goes the other way.

You up for it, mate??

Alex, Dave has called you out and you have refused that challenge... so you know how that looks. I think you're taking this thing too far. Maybe you got hurt by some reviews of your script and it escalated to this. You're not so easily offended, come on.

What? You used the F-bomb in your email to me that started it. Maybe you should reread it?

Since they were PMs, I wouldn't feel comfortable posting them without consent of Alex. i.e the P stands for private.
