Hi all,

Any Dark Tower by Stephen King fans out there?

It's my favourite book series of all time and Wizard and Glass is my all time favourite book.

This is finally being made and Idris Elba has been cast for the main role. For anyone how knows nothing about this series, when you think the main character, Roland, you think Clint Eastwood. He is a bit too old for the part now, but at the very least I think it would have to be along the same lines.

I really like Idris as an actor, The Wire being a personal favourite of mine, but I just can't see it.

Love to know what everyone else’s thoughts on this one are.

Cheers,

Warren

It's an OK series.

I & IV are great, II & III are OK.  I'm almost done V, which is good so far, I like it a lot... probably because of the return of Callahan from Salem's Lot.

Am I excited about the casting news?  No, not at all.  It's fucking stupid.

Why is Matthew McConahey The Man in Black?  If anything, he should be Roland.

It makes me wonder if they're gonna make Susannah white just to switch up the conflict.

My excitement for this went downhill pretty fast.  I'll wait for DVD.

Agreed on all accounts. I hope they know what their doing.

I would be happy with Matthew McConaughey as Roland. I can't really see him as The Man in Black either. The whole thing doesn’t make sense.

Yep have no idea why a black guy is Roland

i read all the books except the last 2. the Song Of susannah was so tedious and boring at the start that I gave up on the series with the end in sight

Knee jerk reaction to the recent Oscars controversy maybe? I'm all for equal rights and equal treatment but this just doesn't work, on paper atleast. Who knows, maybe he will do it justice.

Would highly recommend sticking with the books.

I'm a big fan of the series, and have no real problem with the casting. Yeah, it's well known Roland is white and Susannah is black, but I don't think it's a key element to the story.

What I fear is the story itself and the tone. It seems like this film will pick up around the 3rd book. I don't think they'll be able to get the feeling right. It's a strange series with a mix of many genres. I fear it'll be a total disaster. I hope I'm wrong.

A person should get the role or job only if they are properly qualified. If that means no black people, or indeed no white people, then so be it. Colour should not be an issue. They making it an issue is racist. It's racist against white people. Which as we all know is just fine... because black people were once enslaved. Well, so were white people. They enslaved us first... kidnapping our people from the coastlines, fishermen, merchant ships. Africa built palaces made of solid gold on the backs of white slaves. That was until Great Britain built a navy so powerful that we would never be slaves again. Britain, ne'er, ne'er, ne'er shall be slaves! They probably should have added 'again' to the end of that sentence. We then conquered Africa and melted down their gold, brought it home. That's history, folks. Real history. We shouldn't have to apologise or feel guilty for anything. If anything, they should apolgise for whining so much.

You know this has happened in the reverse too? Has anyone read, The Running Man? In the original book (which is hugely better than the film), Killian was a black man.

Nobody cried about that as far as I know. But I know that it pissed me off at the time. Not just that, but the complete changing of the plot. The film was absolute shite.

Just curious, is The Dark Tower the same story as The Stand or are they two different stories?

Different.

Also, just started The Gunslinger myself. Super late to the party, but at least there's no reason for the cast to bug me, and I'll still get to experience the film as a reader first. Hopefully it's as good as everyone says.

They are different but there are crossover characters from The Stand, Salem's Lot and I few others I think.
