I don't know about anyone else, but I usually write with the stereo on.

- so -

Does anyone else do this and if so what kind of music gets you inspired?

I, myself like Hendrix, Cash, and old Motown jams.

Oh and I'm also kinda digging Tom Delong's new band... even though they are a blatant rip off of U2 and The Killers and even a little 3rd eye blind.  I still think they've got a great hall sound.

I've been listening to a lot of different stuff lately. Everything from Johnny Cash to Tennesse Ernie Ford to Lil John to Gwar to Pink Floyd to The Vapors. My genre of choice however is death metal (real death metal, that means no Halloween masks). Lately, I've been listening to Cryptopsy, Anata, Exhumed, Aborted, and Cattle Decapitation. Death metal is a huge inspiration to me since its lyrical subject matter and the subject matter of my scripts coincide quite nicely. However pretty much any music keeps the creative juices flowing for me and I'm almost always listening to it while I write.

okay, I have not heard of those "death metal" bands,.  What is death metal, is it like speed metal, or, like is it just really fast with lots of guitar?  I'm just curious that's all.

What constitutes as death metal is often debated by elitists but for me, death metal boils down to three things: 1. death growls ("Cookie Monster" vocals) 2. blast beats (basically bass and snare drum hit repeatedly at the same time) and 3. death-based lyrics. However there're plenty of death metal bands that don't have all of these characteristics but most have at least one. Yeah, metal's kind of overly complicated sometimes .

A lot of times I'll write with a song or c.d. that I envision being used in the scene if it was to be shot, or the mood that the story is supposed to be in at that moment. These could include...

Rob Zombie
Johnny Cash
Mudvayne
Pink Floyd
Alice In Chains
Sevendust
Cold
Korn
System of a Down
The Doors
Chimaira

"Picture Porky Pig raping Elmer Fudd" - George Carlin
"I have to sign before you shoot me?" - Navin Johnson
"It'll take time to restore chaos" - George W. Bush
"Harry, I love you!" - Ben Affleck
"What are you looking at, sugar t*ts?" - The man without a face
"Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day must be put to death." - Exodus 31:15
"No one ever expects The Spanish Inquisition!" - The Spanish Inquisition
"Matt Damon" - Matt Damon

I used to listen to a lot of pop-punk in my high school days. Actually I can still get into it once in awhile, but these days...

Ben Folds
Better Than Ezra
old style jazz (Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, etc.)
Norah Jones
The Eagles
The Who
Wheat
Death Cab For Cutie
Save Ferris
John Mayer
Michelle Branch

Of course, playing right now is some Jamiroquai. I just snagged their entire discography, I'm pretty impressed with it.

Beginnings - It's high school all over again. Seriously. (now fixed and cleaned!)

Johnny Cash, Alternative Country and Classic Hits Gold FM; the stuff from the 70s is my favorite. But hey, I grew up listening to Punk, Hardcore and Metal, so I wasn't always this square. Lol.
