Originally, I was going to call this thread "Songs That Really Suck When You Know About Them." I pondered this when I heard the ABBA song "The Winner Takes It All" run by on my iPod. I'll pop the lyrics at the end of this post so you can get the full effect, but let's talk about this song.

First, let's talk about ABBA. ABBA stands for it's members, Anni-Frid, Benny, Björn, and Agnetha. Anni-Frid and Benny were married just as Agnetha and Björn were married. However, things didn't work out for either couple and they both divorced before ABBA broke up as a band. For the band, Benny and Björn wrote the songs while Anna-Frid and Agentha were the singers. Björn and Agnetha divorced in 1979. "The Winner Takes It All" came out in 1980. Björn denies that the song is autobiographical.

You can be the judge of that, but all the same, Björn did move on to another woman, and the handed his ex this song to sing. I'll bet she could relate to it 100%. I'll bet he got his ass kicked the first time she read the lyrics.

I don't wanna talk
About the things we've gone through
Though it's hurting me
Now it's history
I've played all my cards
And that's what you've done too
Nothing more to say
No more ace to play

The winner takes it all
The loser standing small
Beside the victory
That's her destiny

I was in your arms
Thinking I belonged there
I figured it made sense
Building me a fence
Building me a home
Thinking I'd be strong there
But I was a fool
Playing by the rules

The gods may throw a dice
Their minds as cold as ice
And someone way down here
Loses someone dear
The winner takes it all
The loser has to fall
It's simple and it's plain
Why should I complain?

But tell me does she kiss
Like I used to kiss you?
Does it feel the same
When she calls your name?
Somewhere deep inside
You must know I miss you
But what can I say
Rules must be obeyed

The judges will decide
The likes of me abide
Spectators of the show
Always staying low
The game is on again
A lover or a friend
A big thing or a small
The winner takes it all

I don't wanna talk
Cos it makes me feel sad
And I understand
You've come to shake my hand
I apologize
If it makes you feel bad
Seeing me so tense
No self-confidence
But you see
The winner takes it all
The winner takes it all

The game is on again
A lover or a friend
A big thing or a small
The winner takes it all

The winner takes it all

I think this thread might be the right place to explain this:

I'm 99% sure that Steve Koren and/or Mark O'Keefe listened to "Cat's in the Cradle" then went out and wrote "Click".

I'm not sure why, but I swear, from the lyrics, it always made sense to me that way.

So, what's the deal with Fernando?

Don't ask, don't tell? Don't know. Probably just a story they made up.

Abba also means father in Hebrew.

Thanks for recalling the song and Abba for me. My mother used to love this group. I bought her one of their records once and she used to play it on one of those old furniture styled stereo record player deals. I don't even know what you call those old things anymore.

It's a very beautiful song. Indeed, it is the way it goes. And the cards are fixed; it's only a matter of how we engage with it all as we live out everything that happens. That's the element of choice-- our engagement with what happens and how we relate to it and with it.

OK, I have one.
FIRE AND RAIN  by James Taylor.  The song was written by him after he was released from a mental hospital after a nervous breakdown. His girlfriend Susanne was told while he was on the inside that he has committed suicide.

Of course , he did not but when she heard the news, she decided to meet the same fate and killed herself.

The song reflects his confusion and and ultimate acceptance of the irony of her death.

Great song with true heart.

Just yesterday morning they let me know you were gone
Susanne the plans they made put an end to you
I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song
I just can't remember who to send it to
I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again
Won't you look down upon me, Jesus
You've got to help me make a stand
You've just got to see me through another day
My body's aching and my time is at hand
And I won't make it any other way
Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again

Been walking my mind to an easy time my back turned towards the sun
Lord knows when the cold wind blows it'll turn your head around
Well, there's hours of time on the telephone line to talk about things
to come
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground
Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you, baby, one more time again, now
Thought I'd see you one more time again
There's just a few things coming my way this time around, now
Thought I'd see you, thought I'd see you fire and rain, now

Matthew Good Bands - Carmelina

Watch the video and see what you walk away with... One of their best songs.  It has so much driving it to ignore it.  I'd also like to make mention that Eli Roth's punk ass watched this video and set out to write Hostel...

"seemingly ordinary men - maybe even business men - who get gratification out of the pain of others."

Though the song has nothing to do with that ass blast of a movie or director past that -- It has more to do with the American way of life and how everything is for their taking through self entitlement.

American Pie was about Don McLean’s response to hearing that Buddy Holly died. The movie had no connection to the death of Buddy.

His song Starry Starry Night was inspired by Van Gogh’s painting Starry Night.

Personally I always liked the story told in the Kenny Rogers" song Coward of the County. I thought the protagonist was a well developed character who had very plausible motivation. Especially for a song. But I’m not sure about its backstory.

In 1978 the Dead Kennedys did a version of I Fought the Law which was based on the murder of Harvey Milk and George Moscone.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Fought_the_Law

I Fought The Law (And I won)

Drinkin' beer in the hot sun
I fought the law and I won
I fought the law and I won

I needed sex and I got mine
I fought the law and I won
I fought the law and I won

The law don't mean shit if you've got the right friends
That's how the country's run
Twinkies are the best friend I've ever had
I fought the law And I won
I fought the law and I won

I blew George & Harvey's brains out with my six-gun
I fought the law and I won
I fought the law and I won

Gonna write my book and make a million
I fought the law and I won
I fought the law and I won

I'm the new folk hero of the Ku Klux Klan
My cop friends think that's fine
You can get away with murder if you've got a badge
I fought the law And I won
I fought the law and I won
I fought the law and I won
I am the law
So I won, ungh!

Alright. Just one more.

I don't like Mondays performed by the BoomTown Rats

The silicon chip inside her head gets switched to overload
And nobody's gonna go to school today
She's going to make them stay at home
And daddy doesn't understand it
He always said she was good as gold
And he can see no reasons, 'cause there are no reasons
What reason do you need to be shown?
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays
I want to shoot the whole day down

The telex machine is kept so clean and it types to a waiting world
And mother feels so shocked
Father's world is rocked
And their thoughts turn to their own little girl
Sweet 16 ain't that peachy keen
No, it ain't so neat to admit defeat
They can see no reasons 'cause there are no reasons
What reasons do you need
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays
I want to shoot the whole day down, down, down, shoot it all down

And all the playing has stopped in the playground now
She wants to play with the toys of war
And school's out early and soon we'll be learning
That the lesson today is how to die
And then the bullhorn crackles
And the captain cackles with the problems and the hows and whys
And he can see no reasons 'cause there are no reasons
What reason do you need to die, die?
And the silicon chip inside her head gets switched to overload
And nobody's gonna go to school today
She's going to make them stay at home
Her daddy doesn't understand it
He always said she was good as gold
And he can see no reasons 'cause there are no reasons
What reason do you need to be shown?
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays
Tell me why?
I don't like, I don't like, (Tell me why?) I don't like Mondays
Tell me why?
I don't like, I don't like, (Tell me why?) I don't like Mondays
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays
I want to shoot the whole day down
