i.e., create your own band by naming your favorite at each of these instruments:

vocals
guitar (name 2 - does not have to be lead and rythym)
bass
piano/keyboards
drums

One rule - you can only use one person from each band (in other words, you can't say, Plant on vocals, Page on guitar, etc.)

For example, mine would be:

vocals: Freddie Mercury - Queen
guitar: Stevie Ray Vaughan
           Mark Knopfler - Dire Straits
bass:   John Entwistle, The Who
keys:   Jon Lord, Deep Purple
drums: Mike Portnoy, Dream Theater

vocals -  Ian McCulloch or Matt Good (probably Ian cos he can do bono or himself all day long. So the versitility would be there)

guitar - Dave Genn & Edge (Dave Genn is/was/will never be a part of Matthew Good Band again... So it's justified here)

bass - John Enthwistle (Not a bass player in the world who "no pun intended" was better)

piano/keyboards -  who need one???  Probably Billy joel, I'm sure he's versed enough to do anything.

drums - Ringo (not cos' he's the best drummer - Keith Moon's the best - but because he's got star power. That and because Keith is dead)

---
That'd be my super band... Well, I'd like to sit in and play some lead with them on a few songs, though. Maybe write some material for them.

Dead is okay Baltis - in fact, my band is more posthumous than, well, humous...

Agree on Entwistle obviously - "The Real Me" is still a crank up to 11 for me anytime it comes on...

And Billy is very underrated and probably my second choice on piano.  Anyone who's seen him do "Angry Young Man" or "Root Beer Rag" live knows that Billy is (a) an unbelievable showman and (b) that it almost comes too easy for him...

I went with Lord because of "Concerto for Group and Orchestra"...

wow... good topic...

not that these guys would sound good together at all, but my "all-star" band would be:

vocals: Dave Gahan
guitar: Joe Satriani
          Eddie Van Halen
bass:  Flea
drums: Lars Ulrich

Hmmm...

Vocals - Sting from The Police

Guitarist - Eddie Van Halen - Van Halen and Jerry Garcia - Grateful Dead

Bass -  Bill Wyman - Rolling Stones.  Hell, I'll even throw in Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders too.

Keyboards - Pete Townshend - The Who

Drummer - Neil Peart - Rush

I can live with this.

A nice classic rock lineup, ghost - you're a man (or woman) after my own musical heart...

Though please explain to me why certain people tend to rate EVH so highly?  I like him fine and all, and VH 1 was one of the best rock albums ever made, but there are so many choices among guitarists?  Hendrix, Page, Townsend, May, SRV, Slash, Satriani, Vai, Rhodes, Petrucci, Clapton, Gilmour, Santana, Blackmore, Beck, etc...

Vocals - Robert Plant from Zeppelin

Guitars - Young brothers of AC/DC

Bass - Roger Glover of Deep Purple

Keyboards - Eddie Van Halen of VH or Nancy Wilson of Heart

Drums - Keith Moon of the Who.  Honorable mention goes to Rick Allen of Def Leppard

Good post, AJ

Thanks Greg - in exchange for the compliment I'll let you violate the rules...

A blatant violation, I know.  It's hard to argue one Young brother over the other, so they come as a pair

You may have thwarted me on the "relative" clause - I'll have to consult my guide book...

May as well post my second string lineup while I'm at it:

vocals - James LaBrie (Dream Theater)
guitar - Hendrix, Brian May (Queen)
keys: Billy Joel
bass - Roger Glover (Purple)
drums - Neil Peart (Rush)

Ok, unlike Greg you did not say nice things about me, so you have to lose either Hammet or Burton...

Well, I can always switch Eddie and Pete around.  Eddie plays the keyboards just as good.  But according to your rules, I couldn't throw in Andy Sumners of the police because as you know, I have sting as my vocals.  To be honest, everyone you listed is great but I'm just a bigger fan of EDDIE.

Heck, I wanted to use all of "Rush"
