Welcome to the January 2014 One Week Challenge:

For the next 10 days, you will suffer from a condition commonly referred to as the "Cassandra Complex". You will be unable to convince anyone of a future you know is coming and likely be thought of as a bit crazy due to your insistence on being a time traveler.

T-minus 240 hours until your OWC script is due.

Topic: Time Travel
Genre: Open

You have ten days to write a screenplay between 10 and 15 pages. The screenplay must be properly formatted and in PDF format. The scripts are due on Friday, January 10th at 11:59PM EST and must be submitted to: SimplyScripts.com/owc.

There will be a Writer's Choice wherein the participants (and only the participants) will be asked to select the three scripts he or she likes the best.

Timeline:

December 31st at 11:59PM EST - Theme and Genre announced.

January 10th at 11:59PM EST - Scripts are due.

January 24th at 5:00PM EST - Names and writer's choice revealed.

Da Rules:

Your protagonist must travel to some point in the past using some form of time travel device (the method is up to you. It could be a time machine, wormhole, electromagnetic explosion a la Lost, etc). So long as they travel into the past.

You do not have to show them in the present before they time travel. You can start with them already in the past if you like, however...

We must see the results of their exploits and its effect on the present (from their point of view. In other words, if they traveled from 1977, back to 1954, we would need to see how the changes they made--or didn't make--affected life in 1977): positive, negative or neutral.

Your character can travel from any point in history, even if it's from a point in our current future, to fix an event that hasn't happened yet. For example, they can travel from 2014 to 1968 to stop Martin Luther King Jr. from being shot, 2008 to 2000 to stop that bully from picking on you in high school or you can even travel from 2491 to 2240 to stop World War XVII.

You can alter history in any way you see fit, so long as, at some point after your character "succeeds" or "fails" in their mission, we see the effect they had on their present.

Jargon:

10 - 15 pages.

Properly formatted & saved as a PDF file.

This isn't a contest. There are no prizes.

Free to submit.

One entry per person.

No pissers, please.

You can revise your script as many times as you wish up until 11:59PM EST on January 10th.

Participants are strongly encouraged to read and comment/review on the scripts submitted.

Do not put your real name on your script. However, please use your real name when submitting your script. (After the challenge closes you can either have your script removed or resubmit with your script with your name on it.

Please put © on the bottom left corner of your title page.

Best of luck and I hope you guys have a lot of fun with this contest.

Aren't we in standard time right now?  Or is that considered time travel too?

Can we go back in time and pick another topic?

I'm kidding.

Actually I'm not.

Okay I am.

Maybe.

I dunno.

10-15 pages is a lot.

No. Good. Too bad. Oh, well. Make up your mind. Lost your chance. Respectively. =)

Maybe so, but setting up time travel takes a bit of extra time. Plus, you have an extra three days. You can do it. =)

Time travel is great when it's done well - a great idea that should produce some interesting results. And, a very generous page count.

Delicious irony here - am still working on a 'saving Marilyn from being murdered' time travel feature, lol.

Love the open genre. A comedy could beckon. It is a sorta challenge to make the story fit in the 10 to 15.

I like it Blondie!

Couple of quick questions: rating? Budget?

Thanks lol

I tried to write a time travel short story around twenty years ago and failed miserably. I will give this one a go though... just need to recover first. Been a long night.

Time travel, interesting. Never tried one of those before.

As usual I will be trying to keep a budget in mind to give it an outside chance of production, but first I need an idea.

Would it be acceptable just to see, or make contact with the past, rather than physically appear? May not be the intention, but may open some simple opportunities.

Cheers

I figured since you're likely to be working in at least two different timelines, you might need the extra pages.

Open, Stevie. No rating requirements, no budget requirements. The only requirements have to do with the story itself.

If that's the way you write, Bill, feel free. But, you're not required to stick to a certain budget. However, they have to actually travel to the past. They don't need to make it back to the present, but we have to see the effect what they did had on the present.

@Sean

Any chance you can give us a break on the 10 page minimum?  Most OWC's have been a six page minimum.

Much more doable, IMO.

That's my only gripe.

Oh, man, I'm in the process of finishing a very heavy time travel script at the moment so striking another time travel idea might be a little hard.

Although I'm still interested. Will see how it goes.

While I like most time-travel like films especially with a premise like this  (The Terminator and 12 Monkeys come quickly to mind) and paradox stories/movies can mess with your brain a bit, I'm not quite sure I'm into this. I wouldn't know where to start, where to finish. I'm skeptical...

Damn...much better...it was all a dream.  My girl is here and we just had an awesome quiche (that I made!) and we're drinking champagne.  The 6 hotties disappeared and things are back to normal, although I may be just a tad hung over.

Time travel is always tough , but it's a great challenge that I'll tackly early next week.

Hope everyone is safe and in a happy place on this very special day.

I'm not incredibly strict when it comes to the page count. I took two things into consideration when I upped it to 10-15. The first is that you have three extra days. The second is that this is likely to require a slightly more complex story than OWCs typically tend to have. If you think you can write a solid time travel script in six pages, by all means. If you think you can do it in a single page, I stand behind you. But, my guess is that most people will need at least those 10 pages to craft a well-told story, so that's why I set the minimum in place. Personally, I don't ever think a person should be DQ'd for being under the page limit and you won't be in this OWC.

Comedy is allowed, bro! It only becomes a pisstake if it parodies the whole requirements using SS dudes. Plenty of scope for humour in this. My entire story came to me last night out of nowhere and it will fit perfectly. Happy about that as I don't have to worry about cramming at the last minute, lol.

And I just woke up to see Villa had finally won a game!

No, of course not. I made a note in the rules that it could be the main character traveling back to stop a bully from picking on them in high school. Literally, you can have them traveling back to do anything.

I wasn't asleep Lib, just quietly brainstorming, when the whole thing formed. Beginning, middle, end. The title and everything. Only thing is that most people will sorta work out it's mine because of the subject matter lol. But that's too bad

Happy New Year to u too, digger!

So, are we writing something here that involves the Cassandra Complex, or can it be a straight up time travel story without that?

Or, now how about this, we have "The Silverback Complex."

That's the one where you go back to the year 1937, write a one pager (about gorillas, no less) on an old Smith-Corona typewriter. Then, after that, you have a sudden realization that it really doesn't matter what year you're in because nobody knew what the hell it was about in the first place.

Ha.

I deleted my pitch for The Clark Complex because it was so good I'm gonna write it myself and turn it into a feature.

Of course I'll change names to protect the innocent.

I'm in Sean, this is a fun challenge.

One question:  is it necessary to include the time travel method (show it, describe it),
or can it just be a given?  One minute the protagonist is one time frame and then...

CUT TO:

...another time frame.

The method could be part of the mystery of the story.

Lemme know...

I don't think it is wise to go into too much detail on how it is actually done. That was exactly what stopped me finishing my time travel story 20 years ago. Travelling to the past is illogical. Cause and effect... you cannot break that rule.

It's still fucking with me now. If it was the future I could work with that, by travelling close to light speed. They do believe that if you travelled faster than light then travelling backwards may be theoretically possible. However we still run into the cause and effect rule.

Anyway, I'm still thinking about it but I'm not sure I will be able to think of anything worthwhile. Still got a few days to think, I suppose.

This is what I'm thinking of:

With the help of a wacky scientist, a young teen travels back to 1955 in a Delorean turned time-machine. Once there, he meets his parents, still teenagers, but his presence throws things out-of-whack and he must ensure they fall in love and get married or else he'll never come to exist.

Maybe the Delorean can be a Volkswagon Beetle? what do you ya think peeps?
I was also thinking about using a "Flux Capacitor" as the core component to make time travel possible

It's just an idea at the moment

Daggit, great idea for an OWC, Sean!  Unfortunately:

1) I'm in the middle of a rewrite that I really, really wanna get done.
2) No idea's coming to me, at least so far.

Bleh.  Looking forward to the scripts, though!

Actually, I *did* have one idea: an avid movie-goer is disheartened, because no SF films have measured up to his standards since the 80s.  He goes back in time to stop his younger self from seeing Back to the Future, to save himself future comparative heartbreak... While there, his interaction with two budding teen writers inadvertently inspires Looper and Twelve Monkeys...

Quoted from Janet
Actually, I *did* have one idea: an avid movie-goer is disheartened, because no SF films have measured up to his standards since the 80s.  He goes back in time to stop his younger self from seeing Back to the Future, to save himself future comparative heartbreak... While there, his interaction with two budding teen writers inadvertently inspires Looper and Twelve Monkeys...

"Back to the Future"  That's a great name... think i'll use that one

One question: is it necessary to include the time travel method (show it, describe it), or can it just be a given?  One minute the protagonist is one time frame and then...

CUT TO:

...another time frame.

The method could be part of the mystery of the story.

Lemme know...

I'd say that situationally-speaking, it should be (at the bare minimum) hinted at how they traveled back in time. If there's no description, it almost feels like cheating by the writer. However, that's for the reader to decide. As long as a person travels to a point in the past and we see the results and how they affect the present, you don't have to show how they did it.

It probably isn't. I took Don's instructions on the last OWC and Mad Libbed them into fitting the rules on that one, so that link may be old. Hopefully Don will update us with a new one, but if he doesn't, just enter the script in the way you normally would, but in the Comments section, indicate that it is part of the January 2014 OWC, so he will know.

OK, Sean, thanks for get-back and clarification.  I think I have a way to finesse the time travel system.

Good luck everybody.

I didn't know that, but it's probably for the best. It guarantees that if you finish early, you can have a couple days to look over it and make sure it's something you're proud to put your name on. =)

Never considered a time travel script before.  So far I've had a few ideas, including some I like, but the challenge it seems to me is to make this not sound like something already filmed. There have been so  many time travel films.

Also most of my ideas have been more feature orientated.

Thankfully the extra few days are appreciated.

I haven't been around much. Just got a job writing for my city newspaper. I will try and write something for this though, hopefully not as horrible as my last submission.

A bad writer, trying to become decent...

Thank you for all who put up with my work and try and help me improve.

Practice will hopefully pay off for my writing.

Finished yesterday in one sitting (Dustin, you'd be so proud of me). Going to leave it for a day or two before I read it again and realise just how bad it is. Then I'll re-write, make it worse, post, and watch the sh$tty comment flood in. And I haven't even bothered to make it unconfusing. If anyone understands it on the first read I'll give them a blow j special blessing. ahh.

Well done. I actually did the same thing. Took me a few hours to get one done. I've almost finished the vomit draft on another feature too, just writing the very end sequence. The short was handy actually, as I sometimes like to take a break from writing one thing to write another.

I've got another feature in mind too, so I better get to work.

Wibbly Wobbly timey wimey! A perfect opportunity for a Doctor Who fan fic script or Back to the Future crossover with Bill and Ted. Just joking, looking forward to reading these - good luck everybody!

EDIT - I've come up with an idea, just can I get it written up in time? See what I did there? Oh well I'll get my coat.

I toyed, briefly, with the idea of writing a Dr Who fan script for this little competition. I didn't feel that it would go down well. I'm not a fan. For me it's more about nostalgia. I still watch every episode with my kids, but what I find myself doing is checking out the quality of the writing. I suppose the days of just sitting and watching are over.

Took me a couple days to even come up with an image, let alone a story. It's occurred to me that these open challenges are waaay harder than the ones with very specific guidelines. When you can do anything, what do you do? That sort of thing.

Came up with the basic plot two days ago. Spent the following days working out the kinks. I've written a time travel feature before so coming up with the "rules" wasn't too difficult but I did have to make some tweaks to fit the new story.

Aiming to start writing this afternoon/tonight. I think I might actually be able to finish in one sitting like some of the other peeps. Will spend as much time as I can rewriting and probably submit the final draft dead on schedule.

I finished mine yesterday in one sitting as well.

The wide open quality is great, but I may have broken the hinges off that. I might do another tonight. I'm worried mine might not fit all the parameters.

It was hard to pick one idea to develop.  Tons of options with the time travel premise. And I've always wanted to write something in that area of science fiction.

Good luck all. I bet our heads willlall be spinning trying to understand all these shorts. I can't wait to have my mind blown.

I have a first draft - not even sure i understand it! needs substantial work

Not wishing to break tradition i have gone down the same route as my other recent OWC's. It will be obvious which is mine, unless i have a second idea before then.

can you enter twice?  (as if i'm going to have time)

So I wrote an entry.  And I think it's bad.  Don't know if it's even good.

Serious revision must be done before I submit it, be first, I need food and need to also locate will-power.

I would but it is actually a concept of one my screenplays. No worries though, it is really nothing more than a conspiracy theory in future tense if anyone really thought about it. My layering is driving me nuts and much more difficult though. Hope all do well with it. I decided to do a dumb challenge myself though. That is writing the lyric to evoke emotion and rhythm. Low and behold somehow it is helping my thread better. Peace out, all you dream weavers. Although I don't know if this quote is original it may inspire. "When I am done weaving I better dang well have my audience believing"

The rules clearly state that you can only enter once, but as you note, this is time dependent, so I suggest that if your script allows it, then you travel back in time, and enter a script before the one that you entered first which means you haven't actually entered one, and then enter the second one, which is in fact the first one, and then... ugh, sorry I've confused myself -- end your script now, before I finish and then. Go back to the first or second script. and. oh.

Well isn't that just normal screenwriting language. Don't forget to tear it apart put it back together just so you can tear it apart. Then when it is finally weaved don't forget that one thread you forgot so you can just tear it apart and weave again. LOL! Finally an understanding by someone, Thanks SiColl007

Have hand written about 4 pages. So far it's all comic dialogue between the two heroes!

Lucky we got 15 pages this time., lol. No bother though - the story and ending all mapped out. Can edit it once I copy to computer for final submission.

I came up with the outline of the story Saturday, started it Sunday. Flew through the first 4 pages then spent hours on one line!

When I started I wondered if I could get to 10 pages, now wondering if I can do the story justice in 15 pages - Ahh the pain and pleasure of writing.

Work is interfering now, real life sucks tbh.

Wasn't planning on entering this, then had an idea I thought was great. So I decided to do some more in-depth reading on time traveling, which has complicated my idea beyond belief.

And whilst I am nearing a solution for my current problems, I still have a lot more to work out before I start writing.

Fingers crossed I can get it finished in time, otherwise expect an overly complicated time-traveling short to be posted in the shorts section soon

yup, thats sounds familiar. Overly complicated seems a theme with time travel. yet, i'm sure a crisp, simple, meaningful short could be nailed without it - just not mine.

I will enter with little expectation, then reduce it

Ha, yeah, I really wish that I didn't try to research time traveling before I started writing this. The idea started off simple enough, but has morphed into something likely to have even Shane Carruth scratching his head.

I'm hoping that I will be able to iron out the concept in the day tomorrow, then knock out a first draft in the evening, and spend Friday rewriting it.

That's the dream, anyway

Absolutely. But I think she has enough, ahem, assets to keep her going for a while.

Good luck everybody.

24 hrs left, no free time and a below par script

not sure why i have struggled on this one, the challenge has plenty of options

Question - how many will Kevin and Dena enter? I'll go for three even with seans rules

Big lew, not that i know him, entered twice last time - well done

My scripts  HERE

The Elevator Most Belonging To Alice - Semi Final Bluecat, Runner Up Nashville
Inner Journey - Page Awards Finalist - Bluecat semi final
Grieving Spell - winner - London Film Awards.  Third - Honolulu

Man, this is worse than finals week. Just did a final read, and suddenly I'm seeing mistakes, so I'm re-wording, then undoing, then undoing the undo or re-doing or something. How is it that it looks worse now I'm just about to post? Why do I enter OWCs? Don't I have enough stress in my life???

Finished it, submitted it and now I'm thinking I've tried to do too much, it's too rushed, there's too many mistakes. How do you guys manage? lol!

Still, whatever it turns out to be like I've managed to finish my first OWC and I'm proud of that.

Have written to the end. Just trying to fix up some time travel logistics that I overlooked.

But am happy with it.

Sorry, I was going to write one, sad down yesterday and cranked out five pages. But I'm feeling so sick and weak today that can't go further.
I wish I started earlier.
And no time for the rewrite - not good for me at all. Actually in a way I'm sparing you, so be happy as I'm not reaching the finish line once again.
Sorry (or congrats - up to you).

This really is going to be a tough one to get completed on time. Still haven't finished writing it and I'm only going to be around for a few hours later. I wish I could go back in time a week and convince myself to decide to enter this competition with more than 3 days to go

I really like the theme here! Wish I didn't only see it last night but I'm forcing myself to complete one, it's a new year and it's time to get my fingers in motion. I've got an idea I'm pretty content with, it's probably plagued with loopholes but I'm trying to keep it as simple as possible. Time travel stresses me out, the key here is to not over think it.

Well I'm happy, and a little surprised, to say I've completed something. The idea came easily enough, but real life knocked me upside the head and it's been hard to focus even when I've got time to.

Thank God for the extra days. Been able to focus and knock it out much better

As for confusing... I'm not trying to eliminate confusion. More like quarantine it from what's important. We'll see.

Good luck all!

Well, according to the Urban dictionary, a "wooza" means woman, or a girlfriend.

Hope this helped!

No problem mate. I've tried to stick to words of two syllables, so (fingers crossed) you won't have to check the dictionary too much.

I'm impressed that you were able to throw in two 3 syllable words in your response.  Your writing really seems to be improving at a shocking rate.  Before you know it, you'll be able to write a readable script...maybe.

I'm sure you've produced a real show stopper for this OWC that you'll be proud of for minutes to come.

Definitely out. Wrote something but it's not in any shape to submit at this point. I'll post it as a standalone later on once I've worked out the kinks and gone over it a few times.

Interesting challenge though. The three days made a huge difference. Good call on that one because this was definitely tough. Will be reading a few for sure.

Fuck it, I'm out.

I really wanted to enter this (the fact that this is the first OWC which I have even began to write an entry is testament to that), but I have come undone by being over ambitious with the story that I was writing.

I'm currently at 19 pages and still haven't even reached the ending yet.

If the script wasn't so complex, I could potentially cut something out. But if I cut out the 5-10 pages needed to get this down to the 15 pages, people would be left seriously scratching their heads (more than they would be doing when the script is at it's full length, haha).

Looking forward to reading the other entries though

So that's, what, four people in so far? Didn't think it would trip so many people up - probably the lack of boundaries. Here's hoping on some late entries.

One entry per person, no pissers, and mine'll be bounced back at me (as is usual ) for not meeting the entry requirements. Soon there'll be none. Unless Dustin really does enter. Up for OWC Dustin?

Just submitted mine. Best of luck to everyone who entered. Hopefully this time around the peeps who wrote a script will participate and review everyone of them. I'm tired of seeing 30 people enter and several scripts get only 15 - 20 reviews.

I'm with you on that, Dirk.

I won't be entering this time, but I will be reading.

Best of luck to all and congrats to all who enter, as it is a tough challenge, but also a great challenge.  I'm so bummed I didn't jump on this earlier, but Dustin is very happy, and that's what really counts.

Bummer, another casualty here. I won't meet the deadline on this. Time travel's mind bending trip did a number on me. I might try to finish it and post it later.

You guys went absolutely insane while I was at work. Probably for the best anyway, as most discussion is good discussion. =)

I'm several hours late, but seriously Dustin, cut that shit out. I don't want anything personal going on, not in this contest. Jeff, you know better than to go back and forth with people.

Toby, don't feel restricted by page length. It's not engraved in stone. But, usually the page count does not include the title page.

Congratulations to all who entered or will enter. Those who didn't, totally understandable but I appreciate the interest as it gives me hope for the future.

Still two and a half hours to go... =)

I finished mine.  Then changed it.  Then felt unconfident in my idea.  Not in love with my story either.  This was the first OWC I attempted to enter.  Not being able to reached my laptop today also drew me out of this off the bat.  I might post it up sometime later as a short, though.  Only... Time... will tell.

Sorry for the cheese.

Anyways, looking forward to the entries.  Shall be reading them all.

You can't send the pdf to Don to enter? After you write in all the info, can't you just enter it here: UPLOAD or are you having trouble entering it that way as well?

Sure. A script that's bad for the sake of being bad. It usually comes from a writer who knows how to write better but is trying to imitate another who doesn't.

It's no big deal, Jeff. It's not like it's the last OWC that there's ever going to be. And, yeah, I don't know if that's true (mostly because I've hardly done any modding), but apparently, I'm batting 1.000 in OWC-Land, so that's something I suppose. =)

I'd like to put out a big shout out to Don for allowing this little contest. Really, he's the one who made this possible (I just filled in Mad Libs). At the same time, Don also mentioned to me that he's going to be a little busy and will start uploading the scripts sometime this afternoon EST. So, it may be a little later than usual, but certainly not so much so that it will be a detriment to the amount of time for anyone's reviews. Happy reading and reviewing. =)

A pisser is short for pisstake. This is a comedy script, usually a parody of the requirements and involving using SS people as chars, with jokes about their personalities and habits, etc.

Every OWC usually produces a couple, of varying success, lol

For some reason I see John Cleese in full 'Gestapo' trying to figure out how to install an 8 bit version of "Mein Kraft" on an IBM Selectric.

Thanks for the insight...

Wrote mine in a single sitting. Took another few looks at it while finishing a feature then handed it in with around 36 hours till the deadline.

Your last effort was a disaster so I'm not surprised to see you bow out of this one. Chicken.

I was checking the forum after a long absence. I got excited that the OWC is here already. I heard about it, but never participated in it. (Didn't know what I was missing) I checked the deadline, it was Jan 10. Cool! I checked the bottom right corner of my screen; Jan 11. Not cool. But I live in Algeria, and the day is still young. Time Zone always has been my friend when it comes to deadline. It's 4 am EST Jan 11. Not cool at all. Now I really needs a time travel device not just a story with one in it.

I've promised, ages ago, that I'll return the favor for all the helpful reviews I got for my script, but I didn't. I'm sorry. I'm not selfish, but it's a drag not to be so. My laziness is always forcing me to do horrible things. Really horrible things. You don't really wanna know.

But it's 2014. Which means the Mayans were wrong. Curse them! I didn't do anything with my life because I thought if it's gonna end in 2012 then nothing is really worth the trouble. Long story short, I'll be reviewing this OWC. Get ready!

Cheers, Mark. Really don't know why I asked considering I am so over the page count anyway, haha. But I guess one less page to cut out is always a good thing.

I hope you submitted, Toby.

Hey, Jeff

Good to hear from you. Lot of frost on my melons this winter.
Hope the New Year is off to a great start for you.

Sorry to hear the timing wasn't good for you with this challenge. I gave it a shot, we'll see what happens.

Good, bad or indifferent, always appreciate your comments - I never feel there's anything behind them other than an honest, smart, real reaction. (Do I send the check to the same place?)

Next time, cowboy.

Unfortunately not

Didn't have the time to trim the script down to an appropriate page length, and didn't want to disrespect everyone by submitting something which was so over length.

So I've got to relish my role as a reader only in this OWC.

I am making a pact to definitely enter the next one though.

Hey, wonder if there's any chance of getting all the scripts listed in one place (like the previous OWC?)  That was a pretty user friendly setup...

We'll done to those  who entered, I'll try and read as many as possible.

One idea I had, hopefully not to be repeated in an actual script, was a person traveling back in time only to change sex in the process. They then had to deal with the change in time as well their new found sex - I  thought there was lots of options in there, but didn't get around to write it.

On the other hand, I have been shockingly impressed with the level of talent I've read so far.  Maybe I'm somehow picking out the cream, not sure, but several have been very well thought out and put togther.

Steve, maybe you're just on a bit of a positive curve lately. No, that was sarcasm. Even before the OWC you were being negative about a lot of stuff - I understand someone criticising something, but you just seem to be on a negative bender at the moment.

I mean look, even Jeff seems to be able to pull positivity from stuff he's reading. Now if Jeff can do it...

I remember seeing this done in a Quantum Leap episode back in the day. I did a quick search in the TV Scripts and found one. It's called "Song for the Soul" the link is here;

http://leethomson.myzen.co.uk/Quantum_Leap/

Actually, this is not the one I remember, so it looks as if they had a crack at it a few times. Think I'm going to go through these (scripts) later tonight. I used to watch that show avidly... until it (television) went to hell in a hand basket.

Take care... Rick.

Quoted from Levy
The God Squad
Why do you bold characters in the intro?  Definitely took me out of the read right from the gate as I'm stopping to think about why you chose this particular format instead of focusing on your story.
Lots of talking... and more VO.

Like I said in another thread, leave the VO to Martin Scorsese.

Leaper
Watch some Scorsese movies to perfect the art of VO.
Stopping on page 7... another boring entry... nothing exciting going on.  Sorry.

Known But To God
I like how the dialogue is quick back and forth banter, instead of big blocks of boring talky exposition.
However the closer I got to the end of this the more I was scratching my head.
Didn't really like much about this.

The Ultimate Weapon
Not much to say... thought this was kinda bland...

Psychopomp 83'
More than half way through and nothing is capturing my attention.  Stopping on page 10.
I'll try and read more of these later... hopefully they get better.

Lost Lives
I'll reiterate Oscar's line on page 5.  I'm so F**king lost.

Die Bieber Die - OWC
I think I have to re-read the rules thread...
Do all of these have to have long talky scenes explaining how to time travel?
Boring.  I'm out on page 6.

Mr. Time
Didn't really get into this.  Talking heads and Charlie Chaplin, especially, was kind of boring.

Coming Out Tavern - OWC
This was kind of dull.  Talk-fest.  Nothing exciting happened.  The effects weren't that major or serious.
Not my cup of joe.

And I thought Steve was being very positive

It wasn't an easy challenge as a lot of peeps jumped out before the end, so how about a little encouragement to those who actually finished. There's a few newbies in here play somewhat nice.

Mark

Yet to comment on a few of these, a bit busy at the mo'.

Just want to say though, after reading quite a few comments... I really wish the (V.O.) police would give it a break. Time travel stories are ripe for this device and when done well it works.

Yep, you can argue the point of 'done well' but even so, I can't quite fathom how many people seem to get their knickers in a knot about it.   Story, as usual, is key.

I think I may have been overly negative towards some shorts here too. I will go back through and make sure I didn't get things wrong, like bailed too early, or been overly critical on little things. I think the effects of other stories can carry over, and I may have read too much at once.

Finished reading them all and commenting. Man that was a real head job. Well done to everyone who entered, I got something out of all of them. I'm just not sure where I am, what year it is or who is the President?

If you haven't reviewed yet, DO IT! If you bailed out after a page or so claiming this was the worst piece of garbage since garbage was invented, shame on you! Go back and give these guys some proper feedback so they can learn and grow as writers!

Well said & well done Mark

I'm struggling to find an early winner - both myself, and from feedback I'm reading on the boards. I do have a couple of favs - are we allowed to say who our front runners are??

I'm just past the halfway mark so I should be good for the 24th.

Yeah, you're allowed to say which ones you liked. The poll should open up on the 24th, but you can discuss it in the interim. Just try to avoid discussing who you believe wrote each script, that's all.

I just wanted to chime in and say that the feedback you guys give on this site, is far more appreciated than you realize. I have learned more from this board in one month, than the previous five years I spent reading any book dedicated to screenwriting.

Hats off to you , good sir.

I've finsihed them all as well.

Surprised at the quality this go'round...in a good way, that is.  This was a difficult challenge, although wide open, time travel requires quite alot of thought and attention to detail.  Most scripts were not only readable, but well thought out, decently written, adn way above what I expected to find.

My favorite was easily "Saving Lives", just because it left me thinking and actually touched me.

I also noted "Better this Way", Madison & Church", and "God Squad", although all had issues, each left me remembering something about them.

Great job everyone!

If you entered, you better read and review as many of these as you can.  For those who didn't enter but still read and reviewed, YOU ROCK!  Way to go.

Just voted - don't want to get my hopes up to early but I've gone back in time and voted for myself exponentially, so I'm confident I'm going to have sex with my great great grandmother who suffered from excessive wind and believed Santa was her pet goldfish.

Slightly off topic, but any tellin' when Don's gonna re-open the submission link (for non-OWC scripts) or in my case an OWC that I didn't enter on time.

By far my favorite: the Ultimate Weapon.  Followed probably by Changes (specifically because of the historical detail put into it.) and  Die Bieber, Die... Which was not something I was expecting to like, given the title...  But it was funny dammit!

But Ultimate Weapon?  THAT was some good storytellin'...    Mr. Time had some nice touches, too.

Almost finished, a couple more to do, then time to vote.

I wasn't going to enter, cos my script had 'issues'. Lots and lots of issues.

Anyway I decided to give it a brutal change and throw it in for better for worse. OWC's can be hard when it doesn't go well but if you're not in, you can't learn. Well, that's what I keep telling myself.

Before this, I hadn't  written a time travel script so it was all good experience. It just appears that a time travel script, in a week, ended up harder than expected, but on balance worth the effort.

To me, OWC's are often about decent ideas that need more time. This OWC is no different - there are some scripts with good potential in there.

Cheers

I've read 4 thus far.  But I'm bogged down with 2 things that involve my future.  The first is a novel, the second is a script literally hanging off a cliff on the verge of production.

To anyone who's script I haven't read yet, I will make time this weekend.

And finished...and voted...but not for my own. I really wish that could be removed, ie voting for you own, just makes me feel uncomfortable having that option. I would prefer not to have it, but then again I couldn't secretly give myself a recommend

However, I am very grateful, as usual, to Don and this time Sean for arranging.

Cheers Folks

Now back to normal life

Actually, I personally have no problem with voting for my own.  I didn't in this case, because I felt there were other scripts that were more deserving.  But I don't think it's wrong to vote for your own script if you honestly, rationally believe that yours is best.  IE: not just because it's yours.  Of course, that requires us to be impartial.  But we are... aren't we?

Technically, you don't have to put anything for your own. You can leave it entirely blank. =)

Thats good to know. I was stressing because I voted for myself in the October OWC. Now I don't feel so bad.

Yeah, I know this is me, I just prefer not to, like Movie poet. Once you get out in the big and world of large competitions you get nowhere near your entry.

But I do like the idea of voting, which doesn't always seem to happen, and the classification is a sound format.

Hey all,

I read all the OWC entries and will post all of my thoughts on them in the next few days.  I'd post them all but I don't want to step on other threads.

I gotta say that these entries were far out!  Thanks for helping out with the boring days out here.  Some promising scripts for sure.

Later,

Johnny
