As in years past, this will be open to anyone regardless if he/she is a discussion board member. Writers have one week to write a short script 10 to 12 pages on the theme and genre announced on October 10th.
This is not a contest. This is a fun exercise. Participants will be asked to select a 'writer's choice' script.
Schedule:
Wednesday, October 12th - Genre and Topic Released Scripts Due Friday, October 19th at 11:59 pm edt October 21 posting of scripts. October 27th - Writer's choice selections due.
The entirety of the OWC takes place in Eastern Daylight Time which is UTC/GMT -4 hours. So, the OWC is a little bit harder for anyone who doesn't live on the Eastern Seaboard of the US and A. Everyone else has to do math.

Wednesday, October 10th - Genre and Topic Released Scripts Due Wednesday, October 17th at 11:59 pm edt
Wednesday to Wednesday? What gives?
Whenever I play, I always look forward to that initial late-night burst on the first Friday -- and I know others squeeze every last minute out of the midnight deadline on the second Friday. Might be tough on a Wednesday.
Not that it matters a great deal. Just curious.
October is always my favorite one. Keeping my fingers crossed for horror. Been a while since I trotted out something new.
Was October 2011 really the last one? Wow. I'm surprised by that.
No, there was one back in Febuary. The thread -topic is wayyyyyy down. The theme was witchcraft, but in a non-fantasy/horror setting and a springboard for the recent 7wk if I'm not mistaken
I'm going to guess by that relatively "large" page limit the genre WON'T be horror. Otherwise it'll be 30+ entries x an average of 11pgs ea. = easily >330pgs + comments to read.
8 - 10 pages for horror is traditionally enough to make us all ill from reading+analysis more than writing. And I'm more durable than most.
'twill be interesting to see what rabbit pops outta da hat 101012.
How about... we first change the word "pages" to "dollars" and then change the whole statement to "We will pay you 10 to 12 dollars."
How many "dollars" are you expecting? 10 to 12.
How many pages are they expecting? 10 to 12
Clear as crystal, now?
Thanks for the incredibly helpful response!
I understand what his wording implies. I'm asking if that's a mistake, because it seems like an incredibly narrow and high page specification. Especially for people who end up having script ideas that really should be 5 pages long and end up filling the rest of it with fluff to meet the page demands. It could make for some very tedious reads.
It's not a bad idea to allow people to write up to 12 pages, but as I'm sure most of us have figured it out by now, a lot of 12 pagers really should have been 4-6 pagers with tight editing.
Though I'm glad I gave you a chance to show of your flawless thinking skills.
'Artist' is not a term you should use to refer to yourself. Let others, and your work, do it for you.
You need to write a 10-12 pager with tight editing and no padding. We all will know if you're padding. And the title page does not count toward the page count.
OWC has never had the page limit at 5 pages, I'm pretty sure. I believe the page limit came about years ago when some people decided to submit 1-3 ( ) page pissers.
You need to write a 10-12 pager with tight editing and no padding. We all will know if you're padding. And the title page does not count toward the page count.
Exactly.
And a page with The End on it doesn't count either...
Halloween is on a Wednesday. Not that there is a connection between the OWC and Halloween.
Folks. Don't get too hung up on the page limitations, yet. I originally wrote 10 to 12. I may move that up or down. On October 10, when the theme and genre are announced, I will layout the framework for the challenge.
Just Murdered by Sean Elwood (Zombie Sean) and Gabriel Moronta (Mr. Ripley) - (Dark Comedy, Horror) All is fair in love and war. A hopeless romantic gay man resorts to bloodshed to win the coveted position of Bridesmaid. 99 pages. https://www.simplyscripts.net/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?b-comedy/m-1624410571/
You know, I only participated in said horror OWC once. People liked the script despite the fact I didn't but they all agreed I completely destroyed the rules. Horror and I is like comedy and I, they just don't mix.
Sorry, Steex but it's a month away from Halloween! Let's get something spooky happening here! Maybe a romantic horror? Or even a horror comedy, don't see many of them nowadays... Except for the infamous Cannibal.
I'd bastardize it into a horror romcom. Two sociopath mutants go out on a date. Love tryst between vampire & werewolf. Dr Frankenstein makes love to his monster. And then they switch.
I don't really care, just excited there is going to be one.
I normally have an idea with each challenge so let's hope it isn't the one exception. A few past challenges iwould have been tough, indeed I hope it isn't an action based script. That could be tedious.
My one other hope is that Ray doesn't post more weird videos, that current one is seriously creepy.

Been in Indy all week on business. After partying like I have this week, I need a frickin' vacation. At least I'll have a 3 day weekend, as I feel like I've put my time in already this week wining and dining.
It always amazes me how many incredibly stupid questions peeps throw out whenever an OWC is announced. Just downright silly. 10-12 pages, not including a title page. Seems pretty simple so far. Just wait till a theme is announcced. I can already see the inane questions pouring in...
Theme - horror involving a werewolf - does the werewolf have to have teeth and hair?
horror involving all human characters - Can we include dead non human characters?
horror set in the woods - Does it matter what kind of trees make up these woods? What about using just shrubs and bushes?
horror aboard a ship at sea - how big does the ship have to be? Can it be a submarine?
Looking forward to the actual OWC as well as the dumbass questions we're going to get.
Just trying to get the natives riled up as well as fired up.
Hanging at a Marriott Courtyard, waiting for a taxi to get my oh so hung over ass to the airport so I can sleep...per chance to dream. I feel like I've been in Vegas for 3 days - oh the alcohol intake...scary...seriously scary.
Would it surprise anyone that I missed every single morning meeting? 3 hour time difference is a killer going fom west to east. I guess it probably doesn't help when you're slamming Red Ketels and double Jagers until literally 3:30 AM.
You'd think at my age I'd learn my lesson at some point, but then again, old dogs rarely learn new tricks...
...but I do have a few new tricks up my sleeve for this OWC.
Tonight, i was trying to describe an OWC to a non writer friend. It wasn't easy. After all, i"ve only taken part in three but i feel as if i understand what happens...ie chaos, with a touch or bar fight, mixed with uncertainty and fear, plus...
All the others competitions (sorry OWC isn't a competition) are lovely, and i do adore MP, but it is so different.
gosh i'm looking forward to this...
and Jeff, bring it on... I just hope a few of the regulars turn up, have a go etc its only an ego we have to lose after all!!

I can take it. It just seems like a bummer to treat people that way. Particularly new people who would probably just stop showing up on the site from all the animosity.
This site can be real slow sometimes, so my complaint isn't so much that everyone is harping on my "dumbass question," but the fact taht this is what keeps people from participating.
And the answer will always be, "If they can't handle it, then we don't want them here," but I couldn't disagree more. I wish more people posted here on a regular basis. Sometimes I find myself hitting refresh on the portal page and seeing no activity in hours. I think it could be different with a little less of the venom.
Save the venom for your scripts.
'Artist' is not a term you should use to refer to yourself. Let others, and your work, do it for you.
I agree with scaring away new members and plenty people have left over the years because of it.
When it comes to the OWC, this is just the beginning. Wait until the theme and genre is announced! That's when things really start to get rowdy around here. Then wait until there are 40+ scripts submitted and it's revealed 20% of the writers are not member and didn't even bother to read any of the scripts! It's all part of it.
This site can be real slow sometimes, so my complaint isn't so much that everyone is harping on my "dumbass question," but the fact taht this is what keeps people from participating.
I don't think the "dumbass" was in reference to your question. I'm pretty sure it was in reference to the questions that will come after the genre/theme is announced. And just remember there are no dumb questions... so anyone who calls them dumb is merely reflecting.
Oh, I've been here long enough to have gotten acquainted with Mr. Bush and some of the others. I can take it and I can see when things are said to instigate forum brawls.
I'm just not sure about the ones that are on the cusp of joining or join and leave after a week or after their first script is deemed unfit for toilet paper.
'Artist' is not a term you should use to refer to yourself. Let others, and your work, do it for you.
Hate to disagree with one of my Moderator brethren...but this just ain't so
Then perhaps you might provide a list of examples of what you think are dumb questions so that people who might have those questions know whether to ask them or not.

Felipe, and anyone else that felt offended by my comments - this was not intended directly at anyone. It is a general statement and as said, it will occur again and again once more info is released
In no way was I or would I eve try and run someone off or scare someone off.
As my little joke question post poked fun at questions that will most likely actually arise. Personally, I don't understand where such questions could possibly come from, but trust me,m they will come and come again.
Just as a word of warning, the more questions that are asked, the more rigid the requirements become. My advice? Don't ask questions. Write your entry so that it falls within whatever boundaries The Don dolls out. Quite simple, actually. If someone or everyone doesn't think you followed the challenge rules, so be it.
Most importantly, have fun with it, because that's what it's all about. Think outside the box and put your best foot forward. I'm gonna attempt to put all 3 of my feet forward here.
Sorry if anyone took my words in a way they were not intended. I apologize right here and now.
I'd bastardize it into a horror romcom. Two sociopath mutants go out on a date. Love tryst between vampire & werewolf. Dr Frankenstein makes love to his monster. And then they switch.
I can work with it.
One of the ghouls should be a new mummy, knocked up by the Gill Man Sorry, couldn't resist.

There's always going to be the newbies who have no idea what's going on. Every right to poke fun of us for asking the stupid questions. I'm sure all the veterans get a little sick of it...
You see what happens when we don't have any OWCs? Everyone's all twitchy and hot under the collar, all bent out of shape. You see, Mr. Tamborine Man, we need our jingle-jangle to keep us all sane. You gots ta keep the animals fed or you start losing tourists at the zoo!
I'm offended that you're offended. I'm a victim! It's my hope and dream that the entertainment industry would promote and encourage new fodder for the machine so that there would be EVEN MORRRRRE content of dubious merit.
Your story is in here. Somewhere. --->
Didn't someone around here recently state that something to the effect of "Just because your screenplay was turned down doesn't mean it sucked. It just means it wasn't excellent. It might be good. But not excelllent."
Could be about time for the first Jagie of the evening. Free UFC Heavyweight fight right around the corner. GO BIGFOOT!!!!! Take that giant Hawaiian down!!!
I've heard a rumour that the OWC is going to be a 10-12 page Romantic Comedy with Horror, involving a Werewolf, set on a ship in the woods and with no dialogue but is a monologue. Sounds pretty straight forward to me.
Check out my scripts...if you want to, no pressure.
I am praying that, when all is said and done, this is NOT a no dialogue script. You cannot take away the only thing I don't completely suck at. That's just... not even cool. At all.
Combatants... er... I mean "contestants" might consider doing a little produced and appreciated short film homework: http://www.shortoftheweek.com/films/

Felipe, I think one benefit to it being open is that it gets new people involved. That's how Dena started, and many others. I think the OWC is a gateway to the site for many.
I think we usually get 35 to 45 scripts for Halloween. This is just my second, so I could be wrong.
It's a lot to read, but you don't have to read them all.
The first couple of days, I try to read the ones no has read yet, or not many have. But then as it gets later in the week, I tend to skip those with a low read number. You reach a point where you want to read the ones that are easy to read.
Try to read the ones that stir up discussion or get a ton of reads before you vote.
Adventure films bring in the most revenue, but are cost prohibitive to produce with action films likewise right behind them.
But horror, classic SS Oct OWC fare, is relatively not much more expensive to shoot/produce than drama while bringign in a decent return on investment.
Ergo... SS Oct OWC: Horror is quite popular to bring the bugs outta the woodwork. And we wanna see alllll the flavors of bugs we can!
If the problem with a horror OWC is that too many people enter, wouldn't it be better to not allow non-members to participate?
Think of it like you're a Nazi. The final solution. Mmmm. Okay maybe not. Ban Gypsies. No entries by single mothers. Or homosexuals. I can always tell the ones written by gay men anyway.
I say the more the merrier! Last year this is the ONLY way I ever would have finished a screenplay at all. Here's how it went.
-Wow there's a contest! -Now how do I do this? -I try. -Then start getting feedback WTH these people must hate me. -WTF? You mean I gotta actually work here and read other work??? Felt like I signed up for some BDSM meetup group *teasin* -OMG I am learning! -These people are my mentors, teachers and friends! -I love this shit! I can't get enough! *sings --- Hurt so good..come on baby make it hurt so good*
haha so...unleash the kraken! And let's get down to business Celebrating my one year anniversary!!!
That doesn't sound like me at all, Dena Yellow Pale...not at all.
Wait till you all see how nice the new me is. Every script that enters is already a big winner just for entering. Uh huh...oh no...I don't know if I can be only nice in my feedback.
Yeah, the reason I started writing was because I saw the OWC on the front page while looking for a script. It would be a shame to not let new writers join the site.
The first feedback I ever got was pretty brutal. But I loved it! That's the only way I learn. People generally know what they are doing right, but oblivious to the things they suck at.
Sometimes that Felipe can be a real bully, you know.
I'll just take that as a reference to my last OWC. =D
Anyway, I'm not saying people shouldn't be allowed to join, but if we made people join in order to participate, we'd be getting new members and, who knows, maybe they'd stick around if Jeff was nice enough.

It's now Wednesday the 10th here in Oz, so technically the OWC is on, baby!
I've created my own:
GENRE - Horror
THEME - Jeff Bush's bedroom
Ok, there's a few rules and things that need to be adhered to...
The bedroom can depicted as a 'normal' room, though in Jeff's world, this might not be possible. A dungeon type setup is ok. Extra points given if it resembles a bathroom in a gay night club.
A cast of three characters must be used. One can be in a wheelchair, that's optional. One must be a heroic Aussie guy, extremely well - hung, who has come to rescue the others from Jeff's deviant clutches.
STRICTLY NO FEMALES! This is a horror story not a fucking fantasy - why would there be chicks in Jeff's bedroom? Come on people, get with the program. An animal is permitted and doesn't count towards the cast list. More kudos gained if the said animal is furry and has a limb missing ( three legged llamas rule!). Also this creature must be able to withstand sexual advances made from any character who is an Arizonian.
The script can be set in any time period from now to say, March next year. Bonus points if you have a copy of USA Today visible, dated February 2013, with the headline, 'Niners Win 6th Super Bowl'...
At least 4 Beatles albums must be seen in the said room. If you can make them Abbey Road, the White Album and Revolver, well, it's all damn good. Huge high five if one of your characters is named Ringo...
That's about it for now. Good luck to all who enter and start writing!

Could have a day off on Friday so time to write.....
I've a feeling there will be a lot of scripts entered as everyone seems to be itching for this. I know Stevie must be itching, what with 1600 crabs crawling around in his under carriage.
Ray, you're images and videos disturb me. I wonder what the hell your script will do? lol

He's just giving extra time to work up your iambic pentameter so you can write your Shakespearean OWC entry correctly. If your entry contains a monologue, it must be in sonnet form. Remember the rhyme scheme: ABABCDCDEFEFGG.
And i made time in the next two days to write, instead i'm away with my wife this weekend. She's going to love me and my iPad and new Final draft app....not.

Here's a little something to get you all in the mood for the Shakespearean OWC...
INT. CASTLE - DAY
Stone predominates the setting, tapestries add flavour.
In the high ceiling foyer, one sword slashes down only to be stopped by another. PADOGMA belongs to the first sword and AROMAGIO belongs to the second.
AROMAGIO Where didst thou learn to fight, a nunnery?
The tension on the swords is palpable. Padogma grunts with effort.
PADOGMA Tis a shame that a steel rod prevents thou from meeting your truest destiny.
AROMAGIO And what would that be, one of your kisses?
PADOGMA A kiss of steel that makes you twins.
AROMAGIO I already have twice the fight as thou.
And the swords ring as Aromagio rolls away, then stands. Padogma's sword touches the floor with a clink.
AROMAGIO And twice the speed. Pity thou aren't younger.
Padogma give chase, his sword raised, one arm raise behind him for balance.
PADOGMA Younger than thou and I would need mother's teat.
AROMAGIO Then a pity I'm not younger.
PADOGMA In a moment sir, thou wilt not worry of thine age.
He slashes at Aromagio but Aromagio hops back. He raises his sword in time to catch Padogma's blade on it's return.
AROMAGIO Because victory is ageless.
PADOGMA Victory? For you? Only if thou dreams of it.
AROMAGIO Then quickly, bring me the fluffy pillows so that we might begin our Good. Night's. Sleep.
In a deft move Aromagio disarms Padogma. Then using his sword he flings Padogma's sword a short distance away. He holds the tip of his sword against Padogma's neck. Padogma flinches as a small drop of blood forms at the point.
AROMAGIO Methinks I've one point now but thou hast none.
PADOGMA A small setback, nothing less, nothing more.
AROMAGIO Twould be more if my point had been deeper?
PADOGMA Our fortune then that you are most shallow.
AROMAGIO Thou jests?! When I could easily end it.
Aromagio tenses with rising anger, Padogma closes his eyes. QUEYNTELLA calls from above.
Yeah. It's more like being gang raped in a Columbian prison.
boy, that made me laugh!!!!
and for those newbies, i have a feeling this will be a little more gentle than the previous ones, don't know why. Oh yes i do, jeff's got a job and is back in california.

Michael, whilst thy scene appeareth to be in the Shakespearean way, it leaveth much to be desired. Thy grasp of the grammar of the bard is not quite up to par. One cannot help but notice that thou usest the words thou and you most indiscriminately. By my usage of thou, I speak to thee as a friend, whereupon should I choose to use you, I would speak to thee as an acquaintance or as a servant to his master. Such was the influence of the French. If I might also venture upon another point of contention, thine usage of the verbs showeth to me that thou needst more study upon the subject. To be fair, by the time of Shakespeare, the people used you and thou most indiscriminately as well, so perhaps the fault lieth not upon thee. And the verb conjugations are now quite archaic in English but alive and well in German.
It's a rough draft I wrote for Movie Poet several years ago but abandoned for another story. I didn't even realize the story was finished until I checked it after all the talk of Shakespeare in this thread. I thought people might be amused by it, so I posted it. I was certainly amused by it.
Taking it to a final draft point and clearing up the iambic as well as language issues. I don't think so. It's a silly little skit that no one would likely produce.
OCT OWC 2012: Horror Romantic Dramedy. - Shakespearean prison rape meant to be funny but over ANALized and is now not funny. At all.
"Nay! For I have not the purse for thine sausage, sir!" "Oh, thou lusty little new cellmate twink. Do not challenge your bull master to a game of hide and seek, for I know you've not one but TWO purses for the sausages of those to whom I owe many gambling debts!" "Beg pardon as I make hard flatus in mine trousers." "The perfume of beast with two backs offal excites mines kinsmen as much as your dewy man-boy perspiration!"

Jeff is back in AZ, not CA. Jeff's also had back trouble all week, which makes him very grumpy. Jeff was also awakened last night by a frickin' hail storm with thunder and lightning ripping the night apart.

Good thing the OWC hasn't started yet.
Ok,the bets are off.
For some reason I thought you were in CA, my bad. I've flew into Phoenix once, and then drove down to some place like Bisbee, sound right? But thats a different story and a different thread.
All the best everyone with this, glad the genre etc is declared tonight, I just Don doesn't get too prescriptive and there is a degree of freedom.

It's 82 and gorgeous outside. I'm sitting poolside with a beer writing a fight scene. Life is good...I'll be tipsy by the time the OWC is announced. Bring it on!
Cheers!!
DRUNKEN SKYPE-FEST!!!!
YEAH!!!
Let me know if anyone wants to get on tonight......
My poison was red wine last night – its bright and early here so coffee all the way. Although lunchtime can’t quick enough, it’s not only when the OWC is announced but also beer-o-clock.
I'm typsy gonna be passed out before the clock strikes 12 ...my coach will turn into a punkin...and that damn slipper will fall off again somewhere ....story of my life!
