Wow, that's a very broad topic. Plenty of room to move with this one. Ditto to Jeff's comment - can't see that many people would complain about this...still, you never know.

I swear we did witches in February 2012. I don't think it was specified whether it was modern or not. I should look into that.

I stand corrected. It was witches of 20th-21st century, but NOT horror. Should be interesting.

Nah, seriously, though: All's cool.

The criteria works for me.
A little new old school is good.

I'm gettin' kinda tired of the creature feature/psycho slasher/supernatural sh!t.

Yup.
Snorefest.

Last "horror" film I saw that I enjoyed wasn't even really a strict "horror" film: 'Warm Bodies.'
Has a few good chuckles in it.
Good to watch with a teen daughter.

Last GOOD horror film I can't even recall.
'Tucker & Dale vs. Evil." That was good.

Last good LOOKING horror film I've seen was 'The Possesion'. Gorgeous color grading, fair story.

Just watched 'Antiviral' the other day. Meh... Missable.
'WWZ' was more of a action flik than a horror movie; also fair.
Have 'Twixt' waiting on DVD. Fingers crossed.

Yeah was thinking of that one. I think the theme was something about witches coining to modern times for an important mission.

Stevie,

Yep.  Modern witches or warlocks.  Horror.  That is it.

Time to let your imagination take hold and let it lead you where it takes you.  You can do nearly whatever you want.  As long as you have a witch or warlock and horror.

I love the theme. I'm thinking modern redneck (rednecks can be witches, right?), and just by their very nature they lend themselves to the horror genre quite well!

Perfect theme and topic. I'm actually working on a feature with modern witches, so this should be fun!

I thought Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil was a lot of fun. Definitely not horror, but a lot of fun. Anyone looking for some good horror, I just checked out Dead & Buried again, from 1981...it's still awesome.

Favourite modern witch and warlock movies, everyone? I gotta give shout-outs to Suspiria, and, of course, Warlock (too obvious?).

Cool, easy enough. I'll be in.

Tucker and Dale was awesome. Very funny and creative. Original. IMO.

A lot of horror is cheesy. By adding humor like Tucker and Dale does, it makes cheese acceptable.

I'm going to write one about three witches who all sleep with the Devil and turn the tables on him in the end.  I'll call it, The Witches of Westwick.

Or maybe a story about a teenage witch, and she has a talking cat and she lives with her two aunts who are also witches.  I'll call it, Sabrina the Teenage Girl Who Knows Magic and Stuff.

I got it!  It's a story about a witch who forsakes her powers so she can marry a mortal man and live a normal life, but her family doesn't approve of the mixed marriage and constantly meddles in their affairs.  It'll be called, Bedazzler.

Ingenious, I know.

Question. I get the modern thing but can there be a flashback? Like if there is a history of witches at a location or showing how a character became a witch?

Thankfully this stops me doing a comedy. Bad bill! put that Comedy idea down.

It reminds me of the OWC competition when we did the first ten of a feature, the theme being witches in the 20/21st century.

I may also set myself the challenge of low budget as I like the chance these could be filmed....one day.

Now, what would you call a Transgender witch/warlock? Witchlock? Waritch ( war itch - sounds unpleasant)

My scripts  HERE

The Elevator Most Belonging To Alice - Semi Final Bluecat, Runner Up Nashville
Inner Journey - Page Awards Finalist - Bluecat semi final
Grieving Spell - winner - London Film Awards.  Third - Honolulu
Ultimate Weapon - Fresh Voices - second place

Just got back from my vacation, jetlagged and starting a new job on Monday. I'll see if anything pops into my head for this but I do hate horror these days, the movies they come out with are so dull and repetative. The last one I watched that I really enjoyed was Cabin in the Woods and that wasn't pure horror as such but I loved it.

How many Harry Potter pissers do we think we'll see?

At least 1, if I can get my act together...

Some of my scripts:

I'll Be Seeing You (short) - OWC winner
The Gambler (short) - OWC winner
Skip (short) - filmed
Country Road 12 (short) - filmed
The Family Man (short) - filmed
The Journeyers (feature) - optioned

How many pissers will we see in general?  Hopefully, none.

My idea is prtty simple = Shawn meets a warlock, they fall in love, and the warlock makes Shawn the first manchild to bare children.  Shawn gets pregnant from his love tryst, but everyone in his life, including his wife, doesn't realize he's preganant because his belly and arse are already so rotund, it's impossible to tell he's actually carrying a jean short wearing baby Aussie, who he'll later name Lil' Stevie.  The end.

I knew love existed somewhere in this world.  Haha.

The parameters of this OWC are pretty broad so I'm interested to see what people come up with.  I'm definitely gonna give this one a shot.

As soon as I saw this topic I was reminded of the new Rob Zombie flick, the Lords of Salem and I wondered if that was any inspiration for the topic.

I haven't seen the movie though.

Well, I was planning on returning to novels, but witches and warlocks seems to be right up my alley.  Fantasy Horror, 10 pages...

I'm sure I can spend a little time on a 10 page short for this OWC, time to break out the old Amigranthas.

So I'm a bit confused, and hopefully I don't make myself look like an idiot.

Are the scripts posted anonymously and that's why we don't put our names on the script?

That's correct!

But you tell Don when submitting it. he keeps track of who wrote what.

They are usually posted with fake name attached.

Then once read and reviewed by SS'ers a vote is taken as to the best of the stories.

Then the names are revealed.

It's fairer if you don't know who wrote what when reviewing.

Shawn.....><

I agree with you. I was hoping that might be the case when asking the question. Although I feel it doesn't matter as I don't believe I have much of a chance at this anyways but I already started my script and am having fun with it, although I can already tell ten pages will be tough! Lot's of tough editing to come.

Do we submit them with fake names, or does Don (hope I can refer to him at this) get the honor of doing so?

Thank you for all who put up with my work and try and help me improve.

Practice will hopefully pay off for my writing.

You can call him "The Don" also.

Make your own fake name or let The Don do it for you.

For instance, Shanw (Ledbetter) usually uses "Little Fairy Princess" for his fake name.

No, you submit them using your real name. Just don't put it on the script or anywhere in the story.

As far as not having a chance, you'd be supprised.

Alot of times, new writers get just the shot in the arm they need to go on and keep writing.

And remember, I think it's 6-10 pages. It doesn't have to be 10.

Many times writers will fill a short with so much fluff that it could be carved down to 6 and actually tell the story better.

Best of luck in your writing.

I meant keeping it only ten pages or under will be hard! But yes, fluff is an issue and that's what I meant by some tough editing to come!

Actually, it will be tough, as it's usually up to 12 pages.  Keeping it under 10, for me, at least, will be tough.

I'm in but I have absolutely no clue what I'll write about, other than witches and warlocks and Stevie's short shorts.

Come on guys, this is getting out of hand!  I had decided last night after 11 hours of gaming that I wasn't gonna submit an entry as it wasn't gelling with me and I wanted to concentrate on my Marilyn feature.

But I had an idea and it's been kicking around my head and now I'm IN! I just gave the synopsis to my 10 year old daughter and she said 'Wow Daddy, that would make an awesome movie'! Lol

Good luck all!

I was a little hesitant since some of us did write a modern witch story - but it wasn't horror so that kind of evens itself out. I have a rough idea of what I want to do, but 10 pages will definitely be a problem for me.

I've got a first draft done, but most likely when I read it over tomorrow I'll realize it's shit and start over again. But I did manage to keep it down to seven pages.

Here you go, JD. It was to write the first 10 pages of a feature but I think it was agreed upon that shorts were fine too. Although my script wasn't very good, it was a pretty fun challenge.

Hey guys,

Does your main character have to be a witch (warlock)? Can it be a supporting character?

No.
Yes.

When we read it we should be thinking "Yeah, this is a witch story", and not "This is a story - that has a witch in it."

Starting late?  Not really.

No clue here but I really haven't thought much about it.  Hope I can get started tomorrow, but it may be Tuesday before I get thinking.

The only idea I have involves a haunted pair of denim shorts, long ago cursed by a witch, that causes the wearer of the shorts to have a pecker the size an inchworm.

I know a lot of real life witches. Some of them are totally confused - they don't know they are witches. Or worse, they don't agree with me when I tell them.

Nice challenge. Don't have anything yet, but I'll think about it tonight. And I'll go see my few witch friends - maybe learn from them.

Sounds like a modern tale of spell casting via social networking!
They have a little "Cast It" button on their enchanted laptops.
Thanks to Facebook, witches don't need that annoying lock of hair anymore.
That's all I got. LOL.

Kevin, Brett,

Yeah, I'm thinking what to do with that. I do know spell casting girls, one woman who got herself a husband that way and another one who was trying to do all kind of harm (still does if those spells work but I saw her working on one myself). Don't want to come across those ladies. Best that would happen - you end up married to one.

Just to be clear - I'm not one of them.

Still don't know what to do with all that info

Hmm... The more I read about modern witchcraft the more difficult I find it to apply to a horror story - unless, of course, you wanna make the "non-witches" the horrible people.
It's kinda like asking us to write a "modern Christian/Jewish/Muslim/etc." horror story.

However, I believe the intent is to craft a neo-Christian "classic witch" story set in a contemporary environment. Easy peazy.

It's a very benign practice. A lot of "healing", "protection", and communing with nature/spirits.

Gypsy witchcraft is huge in Romania. I did some research a while back on the Romany. Witchcraft commercials came to so completely dominate local television advertising that they had to ban them.

And in Africa witchcraft is still a big part of most local belief systems. It's a big problem as innocent people frequently get blamed for practicing witchcraft when anything goes wrong.

And of course there is that place just outside Kansas, right past the rainbow, there some witch rules with the help of an army of flying monkeys.

Remember: follow the directions.

No "horror" screenplay that's all drama.
No "modern" screenplay set in the distant past or future.
No "witch(es)" doing non-witch stuff.
No <6 or >10 page entries.
No writer's names on your PDF.

Remember the "hurricane" submissions that had no hurricane? Pfft.
Remember the big budget "low budget" submissions? Dingalings.
Remember the 5page pisstakes?

Yeah. I'm paying attention.
Thanks for looking out for me, Jeff!

Yeah my mom has a lot of books on Witchcraft and Paganism because she used to love to study that stuff. Used to put a "spell" on my room when I was younger to keep all of the monsters away ahah. She's not Pagan or a witch though, although she failed the witch test in Amsterdam. But we all know when that test was used...

Anyways, so I have a vast wealth of information...

That unfortunately I'm not using at all :/

Related somewhat -- my family on my dad's side is Melanesian; my father, in fact, apparently nearly died from a "curse" a couple decades ago, during a dispute with a neighbouring family. Their sorceror had tried to end the dispute by using fatal magic on my father, the chief of his tribe. He was violently ill for days, and increasingly weak, until my family was able to bring in a witch doctor from another island to counter the curse, at which point my father made a miraculous and full recovery...

What the hell did I miss?

A Witch or Warlock OWC... I'm guessing somebody already mentioned we did that a few OWC's ago.

Can I re-enter MITCH ? my Man Witch   I told you the UN was made up of Witches and Warlocks

Don't think I'll make this one... good luck to all that enter, I'll try and read a few.

I was thinking this as well. I'm almost finished mine and I'm glad because now I get a few days to sit on it and try and get the crispest edit possible.

My idea kind of sucks, but every other idea I thought of, I'm not talented enough to cut down to only ten pages! But I'm having fun writing it and hopefully there's some entertainment value for those who read it. Nothing profound though ahha.

How's everyone doing?

Nothing coming to me yet, but hopefully I'll get to it ASAP.

Lots of new and old members popping up all over the place tells me this should be a big turnout.

Hopefully, these peeps read and review OWC entries and don't just submit something, never to be seen nor heard from again.

As always, I'll read everything, or at least give it a try.

Looking forward to some kickass witches!!!!

I'm still toying with ideas. A few possibilities so far, but it turns out witches and horror aren't as easy a fit as I had believed. I have the horror scenes I want, now just trying to gel them with a small story that fits.

I agree, Rene. If you look at witches in a realistic way, it's tough, but I bet few actually will.

The cliched fictionalized witch is evil and capable of all sorts of bad shit.  I think that's the way most will handle this and probably the best way to look at horror and witches in a short script.

Pushing mental rope here.

Need some creative Viagra.

Modern witches are so... mamby pamby goody goody - once you get beyond the pagan aspect, of course.

Whatever.

I really like this theme but I haven't had any lightbulb moments yet.

I know nothing really about witches, when it comes to horror I tend to stick with the creatures and rowdy teenagers being slaughtered but sometimes that can give a fresh take on a subgenre.

Did some research on modern witches and found some interesting stuff for sure, but If I come up with an idea it will probably be some weird hocus pocus stuff.

I always have a hard time doing serious horror, I just want to get goofy.

Yup. That's pretty much the way I handled it. I would have loved to go further with my idea, as I originally came in with a different, more unique concept but just couldn't flesh it out.

The way I ended up was more suitable for a Halloween short though. Kind of like V/H/S style in my opinion.

And to Kev, why does this have to be serious?

Because I sure hope it doesn't have to be!

I started last night. Had a rough idea Friday and let it gestate through the weekend. The page limit has been especially tough and I had to throw out a lot of ideas that might've been viable with even five or so more pages.

Initially, I was turned off by the theme. I thought it was too similar to that other OWC and similar enough to my last feature, even though it wasn't about witches per se. In the end, I figured the theme was too broad not to participate and I've had a spot of free time for a change. Thus far, I think I've come up with something sufficiently old school and if not scary, at least spooky.

I went for something rather unique in regards to witches in general.

Can't say what it is, as if I do people will know I wrote it.  Should be interesting to see how people take it in truth, and I think I finally found the correct genre to write.

Not the "standard" way of a witch to act, that's for sure.

Having just cpming out of the hospital (blood clot), I still might be able to pull this off. The topic, however, isn't really my cup of joe, after seeing, in the hopspital, near endless promo commercials for American Horror Story Coven and that other witch themed show for...Lifetime? and when I think Warlock, I think of actor Julian Sands for some reason...

Gimmie a quarter, heads I'm un. Tails I'm out.

Fair game.

Don't waste time watching the movie, though. Complete Rob Zombie self-indulgent snorefest.

I always wonder why peeps turn their script in so early, as opposed to waiting, rereading, editing, etc.

To each their own, but my advice is to w...a...i...t.

I'm leaving for vacation, so I will only be able to check in on the boards after this. Believe me, I'd wait if I could

...Hopefully, these peeps read and review OWC entries and don't just submit something, never to be seen nor heard from again...

Where do we read them, and when? I will have access to a computer most nights while I'm away, so I can probably get some done!

Hey JD, you read them right around here - there will be new threads opened up once the OWC is closed, which will be Friday night around midnite EST.  Don usually posts them in batches of 4 or 5 at a time.

If you're on vacation, enjoy it and don't worry too much about this, but it's always nice when peeps do their share, as each entry will get many reads and reviews, so the way I look at it is, what comes around should surely go around.

Hope to see you 'round!

I might try and bang the script out today but the idea's a little complicated to nail. Hopefully page count doesn't become a problem, or else I might have to write a script about denim short wearing Aussie warlocks.

No one will be disqualified! This is a friendly challenge to get people a chance to feel what it might feel like to be given an assignment by a producer/director. This is a CHALLENGE! NOT a competition. However, if someone strays too far from the assignment, their script just won't get that many reads or votes.

Write on. I still have nothing and won't submit anything, but I will try to read a few.

Well... giving people too much rope isn't healthy for them.

Modern witches.
Horror
Not... classical witches teleported into modern times.
Or... a classical witch thawed from the Russian tundra.
Or... a modern witch intervention about the violation of the three-fold law.

Modern witches.
Horror.

The challenge is to write THAT.

My take is that it must take place not only modern times, but "currently".  A witch can be 10,000 years old and still be set in 2013, no?  And if no, why not?

A good read for those not familiar would be Cleveland James' (jwent) horror feature...uh...damn...I for got the name...Wick -something.  A little help, bros and sisses?

Where the Hell is James lately, anyway?

Ladies and Lords...

I'm super excited there's another OWC. It's more wide open this time with lots of ways to interpret.  I came up with a solid hook, but may abandon it after some research. There are some interesting takes on history available.

I wonder what you guys are thinking in regards to the setting.

I'm thinking this challenge is primed for a variety of landscapes. Any else going outside North America? (Without spoiling anything.) There's enough variety in Europe alone. This might help for those wondering about setting. India. Africa. Arctic. At sea. Just throw in some horror.  I love it.

I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with. It's really inspiring to read different takes. Especially when you're working under the same guidelines. I love the variety of voices from the last OWC and expect the same this time. Being a fan of the genre, I hope someone really goes for it and just delivers pure unrelenting balls-to-the-wall horror. Uh... know what I mean.

Good luck all...

There are certainly lots of locations that could be used for witchcraft: Africa, Romania...pretty much anywhere.

I myself am wary of using a setting that I am not familiar. For example, I would hesitate to set my story in an African village because I'd get too much of it wrong.

But it'll be cool if other people use settings like that, I look forward to reading them.

Good luck!

i have a first, very ugly draft, but it's a draft

it's the type that you just know some will hate, whilst the others wont like it, but, i think it has something. the question is, can i extract the best out of it in the time?

like others i have had a busy week so the time to fine tune is limited. we shall see but i should enter.

My scripts  HERE

The Elevator Most Belonging To Alice - Semi Final Bluecat, Runner Up Nashville
Inner Journey - Page Awards Finalist - Bluecat semi final

Still nothing for me, but at least I'm doing my research now and I have a setting and general character sketches.

Setting - Way under some ocean

Characters - a shark, an octopuss, and a sperm whale

Plot - modern witches

Yeah, it's gonna be good!!!!

I got:

Setting - Starbucks seating area

Characters - Two bored housewives and an unemployed former mortgage loan officer trying to seduce them

Plot - modern witches

Actually I haven't the slightest idea of WTH I'm gonna do in the next... 24hrs before I'm outta time.

I'm starting to get the creepy feeling I'm scrrrrrrewwwwwed.
Normally I have about four or five ideas by now.
Maybe tonight I can cheat the sleep devil and burn some oil til dawn.

These are wide-open parameters, but why am I having more trouble with this than when they're super-restrictive? Glad to know others are kind of in the same boat.

Hey Stevie -

I wasn't born there; but my parents moved from Long Island, NY to Melbourne when I was about two.  They stayed for a few years...then moved to Oklahoma (of all places.)  Then - when I was eleven, we moved to NYS...and I've been a lover of NYC since college.   I think we lived in Laylor??

That said, I have LOTS of Little Golden Books with Skippy the Kangaroo and Humphrey Bear, and pictures of Koalas...  And I can still settle back into the accent whenever I want!

Hi, All

i'd like to introduce myself.

I am among the ghosts of writers past. I haven't participated in the challenges for quite awhile because, as one of you (and John Lennon) said in the thread, "life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans."

Jeff and Libby are the only thread buddies I recognize from two or three years ago, and I look forward to throwing my stuff on the pile and running the gauntlet with all of you now.

I got an email from Don about the Horror/Modern Witches challenge and it sounds like great fun.

As for the powers of "modern witches" I took inspiration from the new TV show called "The Coven," part of The American Horror Story series from Ryan Murphy.  If you didn't see it, in tonight's show they levitated people, brought them back from the dead, sewed body parts together to create a sexy Frankenstein and fried people's brains through their mental powers. And that was in just the first 20 minutes.

These ladies are bad asses.  They aren't using their powers to brew potion to soothe your poison ivy rash.

Good luck with all your stuff.

Later,
Big Lew

Ugh - I can't believe I got nothing. Was counting on this one to start participating...

At this point I don't want to start writing - it's going to be too many mistakes and an awful blah, I want to spare you. So, in the end I'm being kind and thoughtful and considered. You're welcome.

Did it.

Stayed up all night.
Shouldn't have.
Pounded it out.
Poorly followed the outline I crafted.
Believe I wrote a "modern witch horror" script.

First draft is down on paper.

Sure it has some parts that need work, but I can't rewrite what I never writ.  I promise to do my best to give you guys something worth 10 minutes of your life.

Now comes the fun part:  The mad dash to the finish line.

I finally started writing, got three pages done last night. Good start, I like it, but I haven't figured everything out yet. Not a position I like to be in, I prefer having the story worked out before I write anything. We'll see how it turns out, at least I'll have something.

My sentiments exactly, Rene.

I have no problem pounding something out in a few hours as long as I know what I want to write...but I don't still and it's beginning to worry me.

First draft in the bag. I was doubly pleased to find it coming under the upper page count limit. I was worried I'd have to edit it with a machete

I agree that the open parameters make it harder. It gives you a dozen ideas with no clear direction, rather than one idea with no choice.

Can't wait to see the turn out. I'm gonna try to read all of them.

I guess I'll touch up my first draft and send it through.  I've been using the phone for Internet for the last week.  If this cable guy doesn't get his ass here soon, I might have to submit my script at Taco Bell. I'll get some cinnamon twists regardless.

Use the 12, Jeff. Seriously. Don't let an arbitrary limit ruin your story. 12 pages won't stop me from reading and it won't effect my vote the least bit.

Smaller font is not allowed!

However, Jeff, if you run a couple of pages too long, I doubt Don will dq it. It';s not a comp, remember? Just a challenge! You might get fewer reads though and some people might complain, but who cares. It's all in the spirit of writing something on assignment.

I just kicked back a script that exceeded the 10 page limit.  So, I'm going to have to stick to that.

Submitted it yesterday, only day when I had time to write the script. Only one thing to mention though, those extra 2 pages would've been absolutely killer to work with, had a lot of trouble trying to saw this down, easily the difference between a good script and a not-so-good one. Definitely not one of my best works but the OWCs are always great fun to enter. Good luck everyone!

I also noticed when submitting the entry, it asks you for the rating. Not sure if this is a new thing but it gives a nice perspective on what kind of feeling your script evokes, and what type of people might enjoy it.

10 effing pages!!! why did I mis that?? Bollocks. I have a 12 pager done. Liked it as well.

Since I'm shoving bat shit all day at a conservation park, no joke, this is looking like a no entry. Damn.

If I do enter don't expect a fade in or fade out

Been there done that, bro.

I meant dropping the fades to beat the page count, not that I've shovelled bat shit before, lol.

It's hilarious. I vowed at the start of the week that I would get mine done ASAP so I'm not running all over the place like a mad woman's shit at the last minute

But here I am, Friday nite here, warming the computer up to finish it, lol. Luckily I've hand written over half so should be able to knock it off. I still have tomorrow morning (Saturday) to do it too but wanna get it submitted tonite if poss.  Funny how that shit happens

Bummer, I'm out this Challenge, too much work on...but I will be reading.

Gee, I see the Don's being a real hard arse (ass) about page count.

Good to see. Those 12 page entries are a real chore to get through.

P.S. That just made me laugh - it censors (ass) but not our English/Aussie version 'arse'.

God, Lib, talk about behind the times! I've been pissing myself about arse getting through for years, lol.

Have done 8 pages of my entry! Only slight prob is I'm not really to the end yet and there is zero horror! Am saving that for near the end but it will be a huge juggling act! Too tired to do it now. Will get it done tomorrow morn(Saturday here). The entries are due in at about 1or 2 pm our time so will be sweet.

I'm sorry but what does a pisser mean? ahah. Does it mean scripts that are absolutely horrible?

Because mine's pretty terrible, and I've been lazy with the editing. I'm also slightly discouraged seeing how many people did sketches and outlines before starting their script. I personally didn't do any of that, because I figured it was only a ten page Halloween script. But I should have done it.

Anyways, I'll read it over and try and do some editing in the next ten hours.

A bad writer, trying to become decent...

Thank you for all who put up with my work and try and help me improve.

Practice will hopefully pay off for my writing.

A pisser is a purposely horrible script.  The best ones are so bad, they become good, in a humorous way, that is.

Seb, you've got plenty of time still.  Edit that thing like crazy. Seriously, there really no excuse for more than a few mistkes in a 10 page effort.  IMO, you should read it over at least 10 times before even thinking about submitting it.

Now, if you're racing against a deadline, that won't happen, but that doesn't apear to be the case here.

God for it, bro and put your best foot forward.  Looking forward to reading your script.

C'mon, Rene.  You can do it!

I'm about 70% done and I've edited the first 7 pages at least 15 times already.

I'm far from thrilled with my script, but it will be completed and entered.  My favorite character so far is my octopuss - he's 1 badass Warlock!!!!  His special Warlock power is that he can shoot out a cloud of black inklike liquid - of shit...wait...all octopusses can do that, right?  WTF?

Damn, back to the drawing board...

Half way through one. I think it's a decent concept, but it will be rushed. I think with the feedback it might be turned into a cool story, and very filmable. Hopefully its present form won't 'horrify' the readers!

My concept isn't much to write home about.  It's also being rushed, but I am on the finale now.  Tough to properly set this final scene though.  I may have to start drinking to get it rolling.

Mine will not be filmed...that much is for certain.  Budget wouldn't allow for it.

Although I didn't go hog wild without regard to budget, it does afford some creative breathing room to give such little regard.

I probably should have gone creatively ape sh!t crazy with the story in regards to any production's budget.

For the UK people, even though it's 8.18pm to us, to the american's it's 7.18pm.  That extra hour can make all the difference.

I'm done..but...I'm over 10 pages.  ARGH!!!

Even though I've cut this thing down numerous times, I still have to cut at least 4 lines, and I honestly don't know if I can.  Actually, I'd like to add about 6 lines to the finale.

Damn...now comes the fun part.

Good thing my work day is done - I may have to start pounding for inspiration.

I'm sure you know Jeff, but just in case: anything that ends on page 10 is less than 10 pages. I've seen people here make that mistake before.

So as long as you don't hit page 11...you're good!

Yeah, but I hit Page 11 - about 4 lines over.  I went back and cut 7 lines, but I was still on Page 11 - WTF???  So, now I'm cutting more but it's taking away important info.

I'm bummed.  The chopping continues.

But then again, maybe I've already submitted mine and this is all a ruse?

One way or another, I will be in.

Are you done, Kev?

Pia, where are you?

I have a few more pages. I'll get there, though.

I did a different one earlier in the week, written as a short but a concept I wanted to test as a TV pilot. I decided not to use that one though.

Good job!  I think we'll have a great turnout.

I'm hoping most of the SS regulars will be entering.

I actualy just trimmed mine down to 9 pages now!  Wasn't easy but removing a scene actually seems to make this work better now.  I may expand a bit to get onto the 10th page, but either way, I'm going to make it without panicking in the last few hours.

I have just butchered a half decent 12 page script into a 10 pager...sigh.

Anyway, one last tweak and it's in....haven't said that in a while

My scripts  HERE

The Elevator Most Belonging To Alice - Semi Final Bluecat, Runner Up Nashville
Inner Journey - Page Awards Finalist - Bluecat semi final
Grieving Spell - winner - London Film Awards.  Third - Honolulu
Ultimate Weapon - Fresh Voices - second place

Well, I'm in. Had to go through a cruel and painful rejection (it barely hit the 13 page mark), followed by lots of cutting and then cramming together of sentences that don't belong together.

Good luck everyone!

It's 7 am Saturday here. I think the deadline is 1 or 2 pm for me. Computer is on and ready to finish. I can save 2 pages by moving events forward by five minutes of screen time lol

I'm not one to throw gore around but may have to insert some to placate the plebs by the look.

Oh, and a pisstake is not necessarily horrible!!!  It's a deliberate attempt at making the OWC theme funny and satirical. So there!  Lol

Good luck all!

Another edit and another page removed.  I'm down to 8 1/2 pages now and I think that's where it's going to stand.

My back is still out but feeling much better than yesterday.

Stevie, insert both gore and nudity.  Why the Hell not?  If you're runing under the max, add a scene of gratuitous nudity and sex.

Yes, I'm entering 4 scripts...actually 4 versions of the same script.  1 is rated G.  1, PG.  Another, R.  And the final entry, X rated.

Stevie's entering only 1 script, rated P for pisser.

Maybe next year we have the challenge be to DELIBERATELY write a horrible horror.
Not non-sensical.
Not non-horror.
Just... bad.

Almost a "Grindhouse Horror!" or "Exploitation Horror" challenge.

Submitted mine at 5am this morning (AU time) cause I jut kept on going and going and forgot to watch the clock (didn't think i'd get a chance to enter it today either) then forgot that i needed a logline - writing a logline at 5am when your eyes are about boggling out of your head - not good. So mine will be the logline dribbled with random s**t I thought sounded 'great' at the time. sorry peeps

Hopefully the story is better though - not sure that I hit the full horror mark, but we'll see.

Good luck to everyone else.

Okay, I'm in.  Managed to scrape this together somehow...  Not sure about the horror though, perhaps I should have thrown a little naked pagan weirdness in there to up the rating...  I can't honestly say I find witches all that frightening -- the Pink Windmill kind of killed it for me...

Looking forward to reading these.

Good luck to all.

My script stars me as a cheesehead Warlock who has to help the Packers try and beat the Niners. Despite the impossibility of this, I strip off in the Green Bay shower room, cover myself in oil and let the O line do what they want. Apparently, this will cast a spell on the players and think themselves so disgusting that they can achieve anything, including taking down the Niners.

Wow, sounds great bro! Can't wait to read it. Make sure to say it was based on your diary from last season though...

Usually, but many times, The Don releases the first batch right after closing time. If there's a crapload, I think we'll the first batch tonight.

Let's hope!!!!!

I hope so too! I'm out saying goodbye to some good friends tonight since I'm going back to school tomorrow, but hopefully I'm in good enough condition when I get home to read and reply to a few.

Another Newbie saying 'hi',

I'm hoping to get mine in tonight, only a few hours left and I'm on page 4. I do have a sort of plan....

I'm really not sure about the horror aspect. I'd rate it as PG and laughable. My actual script might be the most horrific part -- time will tell.

Anyway hope to see you on the other side.

Bon Chance.

You can do it everyone still writing!

I think Jeff may be putting up some kind of charade regarding his script, he wouldn't tell us the page length, would he?

I just looked at the time, turns out I would have had a spare hour today at 2 because of daylight savings. Would've been nice to give it one last edit. Probably wasn't the best decision to submit it before. I love my concept but the execution needs a lot of work.

I estimate 27 entries.

2 1/2 hours to go.  No big rush yet.

I know from experience that some haven't even started yet.

Keep at it.  Edit the shit out of it and put your best foot forward.

Gonna be a great turnout this time around.

Kudos to The Don for a great open ended challenge.

Hope to see a few posted tonight still, as it's only 6:30 here, Friday night.  Got a good buzz going and am waiting on my girlie to come over.

Just added mine to the collective. It was hard to whittle it down from original 13 pages I ended up with.  I hope it isn't too confusing. But what a great wide open challenge. I kinda wish there was a OWC each month.  I can't wait to read them all. And I'm just throwing this out there since I haven't heard about it - 10 page limit not including title page, right?

Good luck all...

I just hit SEND with 50 minutes to spare. First draft, barely an edit, polished as I went. I didn't even have time to read it over before I submitted. I've never been this close to the wire. If it sucks, I apologize ahead of time.

So as it is my first go - How long do we get to review? And is the readers choice the overall winner?

Oh man. Epic fail on my part. Ugh. I need a drink.

I'll do some reading though. Congrats to all that made it.

59!!!!!

Man, what the freak happened?

And I didn't get mine in on time. I was real close though. Almost didn't do it due to a rough two weeks for me.
Don't panic people,...I'll read you. Shoot, might even wind up reading Jeff's first by pure accident...

When I look back on past OWC, I wrote so many about bad witches (No Flesh Will Be Missed, Pumpkinseeds, for example) and there's one of mine that I wound up diosowning. But the one I was working on was worth it, at least laying out the groundwork for it.  I still would like to thank the concept of this OWC for unexpected help with that.

Holey Moley that's a lot of entries!!!

Wasn't  imagining so much competition - too blo*dy late to write a better script

But very pleased about having to read them all. I'll try to read all!
