Signing in, or up...

God help me!

I usually like to know what the heck I'm signing up for but given you said we can back out, count me in for now. How's that?

I will almost certainly regret this, but I'm throwing my hat in the ring.

I think it was more the fact that scripts that shoehorned the criteria in were still getting high marks for dialogue, characters etc.

I liked the brackets. It's a lot less writing if you don't advance, and also a lot less reading.

Here again FYI:

Past two Tournaments:

https://www.simplyscripts.net/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?b-tournament/

https://www.simplyscripts.net/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?b-Tourney19/

Personally hoping page count is low again as in last years, so as to easily read and review.

Yes, Blondie will let you write a comedy, Cam. And the rest...

For those of you who preferred that format (including myself), I apologize. Not this year. It highly incentivized cheating on something equally subjective.

How would it promote cheating? Who would even cheat at something like this?

It's just an awful lot of reading, plus the writing, in the midst of a very stressful time. At least the writers who are eliminated can concentrate on reading, and there's less and less material to read each week.

When you only have one person to beat, per round, it makes cheating easier to hide. This was what happened the first year. Luckily, Don discovered it before it had an effect on the final outcome.

As for your apprehension about the amount of work involved, I understand. This is no easy undertaking.

LC, my response:

Don, in a flurry of flashing finger movements, danced his beefy, yet lady-like hands across the input device of his combination mathematical computational and moving picture transmitting device, inputted the twenty-one; maybe twenty-two if a certain writer can actually commit to something; names of potential poetical participants in this year’s highly anticipated Writers’ TournamentTM where there are no prizes and really the best one could hope to achieve is either receiving a cheaply made, nay ‘crappy’, mug that some believe the glazing has a lead content that far, far exceeds safety standards of even the  most backward of nations (seriously folks, if you are actually drinking from the thing, get yourself checked particularly if you make your coffee ‘Irish’ (we know who you are)) and may, slowly, be rendering the brains of the recipients a consistency of porridge or mush or whatever passes for breakfast in your part of the world; or getting Sean to rage-quit the site for three months which turns out to be the best three months of his life and yet still comes back; or getting interest in your script from a ‘producer’ who turns out to be a thirteen year old child with a VHS camcorder they found in a card-board box in the basement of their parents house with some home-made ‘art’ films their parents made that time they ‘discovered’ psychedelic mushrooms  - films that really didn’t need to be seen.

Four months, Don. Four months. I have to hibernate from SimplyScripts in the fall in order to dull my fragile senses of the misery and despair of the preceding summer. Then, I still do it again the next year. =)

And this is how you get a 432-page script about a horse.

Feature-length scripts:
Who Wants to Be a Princess? (Family)
Glass House (Horror anthology)

TV pilots:
"Kord" (Fantasy)
"Mal Suerte" (Superhero)

Additional scripts are listed here.

Wow, Don! A few semicolons, but apart from that all of it in one sentence.
Hmm, you could get picked on (if you partake) for rambling stream of consciousness and your use of non-sequiturs, but I'd say: much improved from your initial effort.
...

Btw, yes, congrats from me too, Mark R. Nice one.

Oh great. Another opportunity to promise myself I'll finish something, then spend days staring at a blank computer screen until I admit that I don't have it in me anymore, then spend a month loathing myself. COUNT ME IN!!

Oh, Libby's gonna be all over this one, Marnie. Cool to have another old-school MPer in the mix, too.

Edit: Fucking phones. I hate these things.

Ha! I knew it was all about huge dialog; big, shiny, dialog… and an elephantine coleus – if going the suggested Denis Leary route. Mind you, that was a reference on another thread, so… It might seem totally out to lunch here. As always.

I’ll give this one a try?

I seem somewhat unsure of myself, that being, Canada Day is just around the bend and I usually host a two- or 3-day function.

Is writing actually starting around the registration deadline? June 29-ish? Hopefully, I’ll be able to give it full dedication.

I won't be able to participate on the week of June 6th. I'll be doing a one-week bootcamp at that time. But I'm remaining registered! Cos I'm scared to miss out on something good.

To me it's like Sean layed eggs and we're making omelets out of them.

Well, as some of you have posted below (and I do so appreciate it), today is my (and Stevie's, you micro-peckered Brit. Sorry, Stevie, Jeff's over-used blow-up dolls may be watching us, so I had to say something...) birthday. As such, I feel a present is in order. I'll reveal the purpose of Clue #1 for you all.

As was correctly guessed by ReneC four days ago, you writers are going to be paired off together. However, you are going to be both working with and against each other throughout the duration of the Tournament.

More details on how will follow when the next clue is revealed.

Lol Blondie wrong on both counts - I’m a well hung Aussie

Little secret from the past - my first OWC in Jan 2009 (a two week challenge) was a pairs thing.  I was actually paired with Jeff!  I didn’t know much about him but I learned quickly as I wrote the entire short and we pretended he did some of it

Oh, umm… you mean paired with someone as in co-writing scripts? Okay, umm… I’m not sure I can truly function with a normative thought structure when writing, just throwing that out there.

Blondie will surely have to draw names out of a hat.

Eek! I hope I'm going to like this. So far I'm thinking I prefer playing solo, but I'll try to remain open minded.

Stevie!  You are one funny motherfucker!  And I mean that as a compliment.

I was going to quote you, but both digs were so good, I decided not to.

If the 2 Legends could be paired together again, it would be EPIC!!!!  Pure comedy gold!!!

Release the Kraken!  I'm engaged...no Stevie, not engorged, so don't get all excited.

Quoted from Mr. Blonde

You'll see what I mean. More than likely, the frustration factor, with your partner, will be amplified more and more as the weeks go on.

Soooooo...annoying your writing partner until they quit...annoying everyone until they bail out leaving only the two most annoying Simply Scripters to duke it out until only one survives?!?!?

Kham...good luck with your bootcamp! Sounds like fun.

Maybe each team will have five “stars” of experience. Could be one Of the Ancients, a Been around a While and a Regular, or five New-ish...

Just kidding. It sure Sean has something far more diabolical in mind.

Jeff, it was a joke. Hence the line about reverse psychology. Poking a little fun at your larger than life personality when added to the anxiety of the randomness of being paired with someone. Like back in grade school with science projects.  But if I have to explain it then it obviously wasn't funny, so I apologize.

Bums me to say it, but I'm out.

My availability is spotty over the next few weeks, and if someone else is going to have to count on me to be a good partner... well, I just can't guarantee it. It's one thing to submit a crappy last minute entry for myself... it's quite another to let down a fellow writer.

I'll lurk, though. And, probably write some shorts that match the assignments as I have time. (Just for me.)

Good luck all!

There are a lot of assumptions about partnering being made. Remember the clues, the partnering is likely to be antagonistic. Like forced at gunpoint or working as much against each other as with.

Maybe one person will be forced to write all the dialogue and the other all the action. Or tug of war where they work directly against each other and the "partnering" is because each pairing has different criteria.

Or maybe it's really about brackets and this is the March Madness of screenwriting with pairs actually being pair-offs and may the best script in each pairing win.

Or maybe I'm just giving the madman ideas.

Okay, partner, here are the vowels for this week's script:

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
ééiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiioooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
oooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuüyyy

Have fun with the consonants.

I wouldn't worry about that, BarryJohn.

Though there's a big U.S. contingent there's also a lot of us from far flung lands.

Sean will clue us in... Sometime... In the near future.

P.S. More to the point why has the font gone incredibly small on these last two pages?
And why does the font colour for Mods sometimes turn from purple to black in different posts? Weird.
Maybe it's just me. Or maybe there's a ghost in the machine.

Dave and Paul, you'd better get back in here before I have to pull you by the ears... And, Jeff, too, while I'm at it. If I decide not to run it next year, do you guys really wanna miss out on the last one ever?!

OMG, you are KILLING me. This tourney is my favorite thing here at good ol' SimplyScripts.

Here's my deal... I'm in, IF it's clear I won't harm someone else in the first 2 or 3 weeks. I don't mind taking a hit for writing a bit of junk. But, I don't want to hurt someone else's chances of advancing, if they are counting on me as a partner.

I'm out if there's any kind of inter-connectivity... as it wouldn't be fair to someone else.

I hate to be difficult. (Who am I kidding? I love to be difficult.) Just let me know.

Ironically, the main reason I'll be distracted is trying to develop one of my scripts from last year's tourney into a feature idea for Imagine Impact. The deadline looms over me, ever mocking.

oh, ok, I read Pauls post just now. At first I thought it carries some sexual meaning - like hitting his penis. And I got surprised why Paul should be aware of that.

Everyone will have to sign the agreement. No exceptions, under penalty of death (or something less dramatic, maybe)...

BTW, what I'm saying is - they don't have to bow out now but before signing the agreement.

(oh, and if I sign it and won't have time to write I can always ask my cat to do it for me.)

No, they don't. And, really, I'm just playing around. Trust me when I say that the Agreement isn't what you think it is. Nothing to be worried about.

But, if need be, you can borrow my burning pen and if you would, please, use a dash of hemoglobin on that pretty, dotted line, I would sure appreciate it.

Just a reminder to anyone who may be interested, Registration closes in 8 hours. You'll still be able to get out after this point, but anyone who's not penciled in as a yes or a maybe, by then, will be considered out. Thank you.

^   Yep, me too, Ant. No falling into the abyss for me.

Btw Blondie, the lead up to this is excruciating, worse than being a kid before Christmas.
Please can we have one present to unwrap before the big day? Actually, when is the big reveal day?

I’m not sure where “More to come...” would be more ominous: the agreement with a credit card, the EULA on an installer screen, or in a fortune cookie.

Surprisingly, it's a lot more horrific and foreboding than any of the above mentioned. By weeks 4 and 5, you're going to probably hate somebody else even more than you're going to hate me.

So if we’re themed of how 2020 has sucked, the ten genres are probably drama, horror, sci-fi, drama, drama, drama, drama, drama, drama, and drama

Feature-length scripts:
Who Wants to Be a Princess? (Family)
Glass House (Horror anthology)

TV pilots:
"Kord" (Fantasy)
"Mal Suerte" (Superhero)

Additional scripts are listed here.
