I've had to bail. I'm having trouble understanding still, and I worry the timezone thing is going to disadvantage my team as I'm asleep when all the picking happens.
Thanks anyway everyone and sorry to inconvenience.

Anthony had a great idea...we just assigned everything up front. Now we can work independently and not have to worry about the 3 very different time zones. Up to Ben if he wants to stay in.
To my group members: I've PMed you hopefully a solution to the problem caused by my ditching the tournament...apologies again to everyone else too, and I wish you all luck.
This just wasn't going to work for me - too complicated for my lizard brain, time zones, and my RIL work has gone insane.
How figuratively can you take the theme? I wrote my script and it's very much about the evil that money is. Is it alright not to pound it in the head and not state the theme in the script etc?
That LC! I get it - I think I'm just disappointed because OWCs a always seem so fun from the outside.
Well now you have all the tools you need to participate and write 5 shorts in 5 weeks. I know you're confused about how it works...don't know how else to explain it. Each week a theme is given (this week it's "money is the root of all evil"). You then write a max 5 page incorporating that theme, one of the 5 genres you were given, one of the objects, one character, one location...then cross those off the list because u can only use them one time.
The cool thing about doing this weekly instead of doling everything out in the beginning like we just had to do, is what's left in the last week is the shit no one wanted in previous weeks...like maybe being stuck writing a western incorporating a toenail clipping, strip mall and drag queen. But whatever...you have everything you need to write 5 scripts and not have to worry about teammates. So if you really wanted to do this...then do it. Best of luck.

You don't have to state the theme directly. The way themes generally work is the story focuses on the theme: either saying it's right, saying it's wrong or being indifferent about it. What you've described is probably fine to the readers.
