I've noticed the rankings beside our posts have changed, and we are now classified in terms of various precious metals.

I know it's painfully petty and silly, but I was like, "Hey, I went from 3 stars to 2!"

So what are the new breakpoints based upon?

I'm guessing they must still be based on post-count (even though you can't see it). Last night I moved up from 'Tin' - *spits in disgust* - to 'Bronze' whilst doing nothing other than posting my usual drivel!

Ok, for now, the ranking system is:

Very Pale Grey - 10
Pale Grey - 50
Grey-ish - 250
Grey - 500
Dark Grey - 2000

And, yes.  It will change.

I had no problem with the number of posts ranking, myself.  Either way, it's not that big a deal.

George,

In large part the changes to the rankings are because I'm trying to get a better understanding of how the discussion board code works.  Initially, I learned just enough about the board to get it up and running and then later learned enough to keep everyone and their mother trying to pimp organ enlargement, cheap fags and printer cartridges from spamming the boards.  Then I read that if you don’t track number of posts that folks make, that cuts down on the number of  single word/pad  posts (e.g., LOL!) that some make just to run up their numbers so they can achieve another level toward a ‘nirvana’ amount of posts.

Don

P.S. Roger Doger, I like you man.  Remember it is the quality of the posts, not the quantity.  Size does not matter.

Has anyone ever thought of making a forum ranking that doesn't count the number of posts, but the number of words posted?

It might scale down the people who post short replies just for the sake of getting their post count up. I know that's forbidden in the rules of this forum, but this was more of a general idea.

In all seriousness (and I know I'm the new guy here) I'm not sure what rank and post count are really worth in a forum where another activity (say dvd trades, for example ) doesn't go on. In those situations a hgh post count/long membership *can* be seen as a sign of trust-worthyness... Although to counter that, I've seen board members build up a count of 1000's in a scarily short period of time.

I daresay the board members who really know their stuff will shine out anyway, through the quality of their replies and advice, regardless of how many times they've posted. People who're posting one-liners here, purely to avoid trying to write their scripts (looks to self) will be shown up soon enough!

Although a bit of banter's always good too, no?

I don't think much of rankings either. I just threw away an idea since some people seem to do.

I have definitely seen those guilty of short posts to run up not only a high post count for themselves but for their sciript to get a flaming folder as fast as possible...looking to "The A-List" here and its creator...

Is it just the fact that people think it gives them respect on the forum if they post like hell?  I post when something hits me, I don't care if it gets a flaming folder or a rank up.  I'm still a newb, I feel rank should come from peers and how they rate you.

One message board I have has an option for a "Karma" rating. There are options to exalt or smite, so the Karma ranking shows what people actually think of each other and completely disregards posts. I can, however, see that getting quickly out of hand...

I wouldn't Karma anyone for awhile given the chance to but not all are like that and wuld smite without thinking of it.

We'll have to get to Don or someone high about doing that, I feel that is way better than mindlessly posting.  It'll cut down on mindless posts and make people think harder about what to write and say.

I hope nobody is looking at me because I have 2500 plus posts ha-ha... It took me a good 3 years to get this many, we've had this discussion a year ago and I think the thing that I found is people start these dumb threads for that purpose.

Sometimes I wish Don would just get rid of every non screenwriting related board or restrict posting to 10 posts on each board a month that's not related to screenwriting.

But a guy can only dream.

I think it would to a point. People would shoot for quality posts so they get exalted and not smitten. It would also equalize the playing field somewhat for those who give quality posts but not quantity. That way he who has a post count of 17, could have a higher karma rating for his posts than the one who has over 1000 LOL's but his Karma is quite low because he never says anything.

I'll admit I am kind of high over being top poster number 17, though. It is cool. I do hope my quantity has some measure of quality to it, and not just stupidity.

And this dumb thread was started because Bert noticed his ranking changed. He was curious.

His many posts in that thread are because he likes his series.  I understand that mindset very well.  It takes A LOT of restraint to not pimp BANANA CHAN with every word I type.

I respect that u've worked that long, that is why I feel if we could do the Karma thing that super stars on the boards like u Wesley will have a karma that stays at near or at perfect all the time, and you  couldnt go below a set Karma rating, u'd stay at perfect anyway since u are a cool guy and all, I'd worry about newbs that u bash their script giving u a bad Karma rating.

I've seen a board with that option too... It's certainly an interesting route to go down... How effective it will be will be dependant upon the members of the board really... Looking around, everyone seems level headed enough for that to work... I've not seen much in the way of troll antics from the threads I've checked out...

We've tried karma and ask Don how much that worked... It didn't go well, remember that Alan? But at least I found out people didn't like me ha-ha

The karma option here only lasted a month last year but it didn't work.

Wouldn't that make for a bit of a dry board?

It stands to reason that people who post to a screenwriting board will be interested in other type of media and so on... Also, it's good to be able to just have regular banter... Surely somebody who was not a big fan of the off-topic boards has the option not to read them?

Basically if you're a well known writer on here your Karma/reputation would have been lower than kiss ass reviewers.

Why would I avoid boards that are here? I'm just thinking out loud with the fact I wouldn't be terribly sad if they were to be gone.
