I joined a young composers forum today and they had something really cool on the site.

It's called a shoutbox. I haven't seen anything like it. It's like a chat room, but yet it's not.

Check it out here:
http://www.youngcomposers.com/forum/

Problem is, I have no idea how they did it. I was directed to a guy named Mike, which turned out to be a robot.

Perhaps the mods can ask questions and see what can be done.

The shoutbox is uber-easy to use, too.

It's implemented into the site/board through html code.

There are a few sites out there that provide them, but the problem is that it would probably have the same effect on the server as the chat room (severe lag).

But I've been on that other site all day and it hasn't been lagging.

Or does that depend on the size of the site?

Depends on who they go through and how much bandwidth they have.

Does the site have a lot of traffic?

26 users on right now.

Five or six people in the shoutbox.

Three in the actual chat room.

ETA: Just looked at the room. It's powered by Flashchat.

Same chat room that we were using.

That sight may have higher bandwidth.

The shout box does not necessarily have to use extra bandwidth and it certainly will not use as much a flash chat which periodically does automatic http requests.  Since a shout box can be powered by a users manually making the request, each time they refresh the page the shout box will update.  It's sort of equivalent to a thread that is always open for everyone to see.  But that raises the question of why not just use a thread, one that can be periodically cleared of entries.

I hate having to refresh, though. If there was an automatic refresh option (say, every 5 minutes or so) that'd be cool, too.

I'm just being lazy with that last part.

What ever happened to the chat we used to have?  Doesn't that necessary count as a shoutbox?
