Hey Everyone

I don't mean to be jumping on the "wheres this", "wheres that" bandwgon, this site is a true treasure and a testament to all involved from administrators to members...but! I just noticed (mainly cause I'm trying to write one at the moment and never had much desire to do so before) why hasn't War got its own discussion board among the unproduced screenplay links?

It is a very popular genre. Ok, probably doesn't warrant its own thread as much as Fantasy does but I reckon it would still garner a lot of interest from members.

Feel free to shoot me down here (Originally the pun wasn't intended but I left it in and shamelessly highlighting it now, so yeah I guess...pun intended.

I'll stop typing now

War can be either Action or Drama... or both. I don't think war by itself is a genre though.

I see what you're saying here, but I agree with Zack. I feel that war can fit into other genres... Whether it be action, adventure, drama, comedy (think 'Tropic Thunder' etc.). However, as western has its on sub-section, one could argue that war should as well... But yeah, compared to other genres (horror, action and even western, etc.) I do think that war scripts and films can fit into other genres...

Just my two cents.

T.

War that fits into other genres is like fantasy that fits equally into more than one.  When does it stop?  Sub-genres?  I'm attempting to write my own War film and as much as I'd like to see it's own section, I don't think we should.

Western and War are different I think. When you think western you automatically think wild west and cowboys and indians and bank robberies and other shit like that. When you think War... you think action and drama. Western deserves it's own thread, War does not.

I think it just saves clutter not to have War or Fantasy boards. If you were to have them both, you'd have to add one for Crime as well. It's pointless to crowd the boards when you can just submit a script as Action, Drama, whatever and add a War lable to it. Much can be debated about parallels between War and Western genres. It makes for interesting discussion but in the end, it doesn't really matter.

The western factor was what I was gonna bring up actually, but yeah Zach made a good point.

Having said that westerns may have the "wild west and cowboys and indians and bank robberies and other s*** like that" but by that rational one could also say that war films have their own trademarks such as sadistic generals, epic battle sequences...that actually took place, painstakingly historical accuracies (or inaccuracies), in house terminology. And not too mention powerful motifs like duty, honour, comaderie, patriotism, abuses of power, genocide all from a purely human aspect. Home truths which have occured and are recorded again and again throughout our history to remind us how disgusting humanity can be to one another. No other genre in my opinion comes close to boosting that kind of punch or weight when handle properly.

I know that when I watch a war or anti-war film, (a decent one anyway) it takes on a much greater significance and poignancy than most (decent) fictional action/drama/thrillers out there. Just my opinion is all.

Drama or action would be the way to go here.

I remember, a couple of years ago, there was a discussion about the idea of giving slasher scripts their own board as there were so many of them.  In the end, nothing came of it.

I think "Anime" should just be nixed since it only has one page. "Western" is just as useless with only two pages.

Why would a genre thread be started for "War" just for you? You know what I mean?

Yeah, I agree, Wes. I'm not even that huge of a war film fan anyway, the military username is just something I've used for ages.

Just a query is all, since it is such a popular type of film.

I think anime is too specific as a genre anyway. Anime can fit into comedy, drama action- just about any other thread on the board. It's just the style it's made in that makes it unique. And that probably doesn't even matter in the script.

I mean, I wouldn't know. I haven't read any scripts in the anime section, cuz I thought anime was just japanese-style cartoons. I don't think that needs its own section on the boards.
