I've received a number of emails this past month from screenwriters who are asking how to seek the rights on material that has already been published.

I've answered them giving them a few routes they can take, but I know there is a wealth of knowledge on this board from people who have been/are currently in this situation.

NOTE: This includes: Novels, Short Stories, Magazine Articles, Music, Video Games, and already produced/optioned screenplays

So please, share your knowledge with your fellow screenwriters!!

If the work is published then the rights or access to the rights are normally through the publisher, initially.

Unless the originator still owns them, then it is with them or their agent.
