hey guys, i'm new to screenwriting could i please get some tips as how to go about writing a script. i have many great ideas but i dont really know how to go about getting started. thanks
The biggest things I did when first starting out was:
1. Learn the format and structure. There are some great books out there for writers of all abilities. The Sreeenwriter's Bible is a must have. Also read books by Syd Field, Robert Mckee and take things from them that you think is beneficial.
2. Read screenplays. Read them for fun. Read them for eduction. Break them down. Find screenplays that don't work and figure out why. Read screenplays that do work and figure out why. This sight has many great scripts too.
3. Rewrite. That first draft you eventually complete will not be good. It never is. Writing is rewriting. It's a slow process, but if you are commited to making it better with every draft, you will get a solid screenplay.
The first thing you need to do is understand the basics of formatting, INT./EXT., how to format action and dialogue - take a look at some of the many professional screenplays on this site (maybe start with some of your favourite films?), or maybe even buy a book such as the Screenwriter's Bible.
Since you're completely new to this, I'd say that'd be your first priority. Here's an important point, though: don't overload yourself with information. It's not vital to know everything away. In fact, try to absorb too much too quickly and it might all get a little intimidating. Take your time. It's not hard to write a script, if you know how. Knowing how to write a good script, however...that's something that all of us are constantly looking to discover and achieve, no matter how long we've been writing!
The other thing: don't be afraid to ask questions. Take a look at the Screenwriting Class board - http://www.simplyscripts.net/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?b-screenwrite/. There are different free writing softwares out there; try scripped.com, or perhaps Celtx. But, like I say, don't think you have to rush to become an expert. Take your time, master the basics, and it'll help. As I say, don't be afraid to come to the community for help - everyone on here, as well as every professional writer in the world, was once exactly where you are now. Communities like these are invaluable for wannabe writers, but the more you put in, the more you get out. Welcome to SS, and good luck with your writing.

Welcome. First, go to the library or Google some resources. Read scripts on here and start to study the format. Read lots of everything and discover for yourself what you like to read and watch. That might give you a clue as to the area and genre you might like to pursue.
Getting started isn't usually the problem. It's finishing. That's the challenge.
There's no shortage of resources though, but just remember, the resources are no substitute for continuity of work. Working everyday is an important first step. I think four productive hours a day or more is a start. That means, you get up at 3 am, work until about 7; then you get ready for work.
