So I just created a Youtube account (had one years ago but the password reset emails I request never seem to arrive in my email inbox), and subsequently subscribed to Rick, screenrider, Michael and George's Youtube channels. Anyone else wants a sub, let me know.

But this got me thinking. And bear with me here because I don't know much about how Youtube works, but what I'm suggesting should be possible, right? Why doesn't someone (I'm looking at people like Mr. Cornetto here) set up a Simplyscripts Youtube channel? It could link to the videos of scripts people have had filmed, or videos that members have made themselves...you could even upload the Simplyscripts Radio episodes, and just have still images to accompany them. Everyone on here could subscribe to it, and we could encourage anyone we know who has any connection to Simplyscripts to subscribe to it, too. More subscriptions all round, and potentially more views for everything that we as a community have made.

We could also refer people back to the original site, and the wealth of great unproduced scripts that are just sitting here, waiting to be made. More traffic for the site, perhaps more members for the community...who knows? Exposure for the site means exposure for all of us members. If, as a collective community, we establish a presence elsewhere online, particularly in a place as teeming with potential and actual film-makers as Youtube, then we could all profit from that. Or at least, that's how I see it. I stumbled on this place pretty much by chance, and I'm guessing a lot of you did, too. But if we could put ourselves out there as a vibrant, talented community, then we can lead people here, and we might reap rewards from that.

As I say, though, I don't know a great deal about how these things work. I'm trying to engage with it, but I'm still learning. So this could be a good idea, or it could suck. Thoughts?

Guess who's back? Back again?

It's a good idea.

SS members who wanted to, could post their produced scripts  on the channel, with links to the actual scripts here.  It would also allow for links to any member's own channels, or whatever else they wanted.

I can just imagine there being an image for every single subject said in a sentence. So there'd be quick images that flash by, and repeated images whenever the subject is said more than once. Kind of like the "Powerthirst" video:

I too think this is a great idea.  The radio blogs could attract more traffic to SS.

Great idea!*

* Except for a couple of things.

1. You tube videos are 10 minutes or less - Simply Radio is 30 to 35 minutes each episode.   That means someone has to cut each of these episodes in to 3 or 4 sections that don't end in mid-sentence.

2. Someone would have to take the cuts segments, add relevant images, and convert the whole thing to video.

3. Someone has to upload the video to You Tube.

That's 4-5 hours of work right there and someone will have to do that every couple of weeks without fail, no being sick, no not doing it because you're bored of doing it.

Is anyone out there ready for that kind of commitment?  I don't have the time, do you?   Do you have the equipment and software that is needed?

On the other hand, I've invested a bunch of time getting CGTV to have at least some audience and insuring that it will continue to grow. There are plans for other shows like The Dark or The Avant-Video-Guarde show (Oops! that's supposed to be a secret).  You are welcome to utilise my audience, if you have a video you think is appropriate then let me know.

Okay, so maybe putting up the SimplyScripts Radio episodes isn't a realistic idea.

But I still think that a Simplyscripts channel, essentially acting as a hub for all the Youtube videos that SS members, in whatever capacity, have been involved in, is. Think about it - Rick's work, Tyler's work, your own work, Matt's work and promos for Casting Kristen, the shorts Mike's had filmed, and so much more besides - all in one place.

This is a site for the scripts, that could be a home for the finished films.

Ok. Once again...

Only one person can access a You Tube account unless you share the user name and password.
Who is going to be in charge of the user name password and decide who to give it to?
Who is going to set up the channel and decorate it?
Who is going to answer correspondence that comes to the channel?
Who is going to deal with You Tube when they want to take a video down? Yes they are bastards about that.
Who is going to accept friend requests?
Who is going to go around and favourite the posted films?
Who is going to upload films if someone requests to have their film uploaded?
How will you obtain a copy of the film they want to upload so that you can upload it?
Who is going to take a film down if someone requests to take it down?
Who is going to decide whether or not a film should be on the channel?
What about the films that aren't on You Tube?

All of these questions I've asked are not meant to discourage you - they are legitimate questions that need to be considered before you go off and do something like this.

I'm not discouraged - I'm not saying there wouldn't be work involved, I'm just saying that I think it would be a worthwhile endeavour. Does no-one else think that it would worth it?

Let me try and answer your questions.

Quoted from mcornetto

Anyone willing to work on the channel. And Don, obviously. Any channel would need the Big Guy's approval.

Quoted from mcornetto
Who is going to set up the channel and decorate it?

Well, preferably someone who knows what they're doing when it comes to web design. I set up a channel yesterday - it took ten minutes. Granted it's probably not the best looking channel on the whole site, but it's perfectly servicable. How long did CGTV take to actually set up?

Quoted from mcornetto

Again, if a group of people have the password, they can deal with that.

Quoted from mcornetto

I was thinking people could actually submit their films (in a thread, by email, whatever), rather than having to track them all down. If they supply the links, that shouldn't take TOO long.

Quoted from mcornetto

I don't know enough about Youtube to answer that one. I suppose it would be better to have SS members' videos as favourites rather than uploads. Uploads could be things like OWC announcements, or previews from iScript recordings and SimplyScripts Radio episodes, stuff like that.

Quoted from mcornetto
Who is going to take a film down if someone requests to take it down?
Who is going to decide whether or not a film should be on the channel?

The group of people who have the password. A film would qualify if everyone involved in making it was happy for it to be on the channel, and the people submitting it could prove they had a genuine connection to SS.

Quoted from mcornetto
What about the films that aren't on You Tube?

Simple. It wouldn't be on the channel.

What I'm proposing here isn't a fully-formed idea. I just wondered if anyone thought it might be an interesting development, and one that could potentially reap rewards. I don't know masses about Youtube, so if any answer I've given is unrealistic, naive or just plain incorrect, tell me.

And just in case anyone thinks I'm talking hypothetically, or looking to pass the buck here: if we can come up with a workable plan of action, I'm happy to put the time in to help make it happen. I couldn't do it alone, but I'd definitely pull my weight. I like projects, and this could be a good'un.

Regarding the length of the videos, I'm fairly sure director's accounts can exceed the 10 minute length limit; unless they've removed that option.

I think the idea is good, but someone with the time to deal with it would have to be the one in charge of it. I doubt Don would take any issue with someone else doing this and being in charge of it, since the site has enough responsibility. And those of us with 10+ minute videos are well aware that the director's accounts were removed by YouTube. 10 minutes is the limit., and there's no getting around that. They know how big they are, and they aren't afraid to show you that if they feel the desire to.

The software to do what Cornetto said in regards to busting up the podcast and such is nothing more complicated than Windows Moviemaker. That freebie will take MP3s for audio and you can overlay pictures in it. It's not the most robust moviemaking program, but it can handle simple things like this.

Still, it isn't a bad idea to kick around. Someone might bite.

Another solution (a simpler one) would be to start a sticky thread on the boards, listing the URLs where Simply-films can be found.

Grandfathered in, most likely. I've scoured YouTube to see if you can do more than 10 minutes before, and I used to have a director account. Just didn't have anything more than 10 mins at the time. Whatever you used to be able to do, you can't do more than 10 anymore.

Wouldnt work.

Unless we're going to do a 10 minute video of one of us writing a script?

Okay. So I rethought about this and it could work.

We have movie reviews where one, of three of us could post reviews of a movie. It's already there on youtube with other people doing it - so we can do it differently.

If one of us could Direct (I would certainly do it if I had enough money and support), we could turn some of our unproduced scripts into a trailer like a little tease.

As stated above, post actual shorts created from SS scripts up as well.

We can do "howto" series as well, where one of a couple of us could post howto's, like, how to do a script - post up problems and how to fix them.

If you really think about it, it could work so well.

I looked into the longer than 10 minutes, and I might actually be able to do it. My account is from 2006, and I set it up as a director account. According to their rules, those who already had the ability to upload videos longer than 10 minutes retain the ability to do so. While I never used the ability, I technically had it. I'll find something and try it later. Actually, I could probably just take one of the podcasts, dump it into Moviemaker, make a wmv and see if it takes it.

Alternatively, you can do it if you're a partner. However, becoming a partner requires you have achieved a ton of views consistently on the videos you upload and owning all of the content. That would mean if a partnership is required to get the longer vids, we'd have to start with the shorter ones to get the views and then apply for the partnership.

Yeah, of course it's complicated. To make that more interesting, we would not technically own the rights to the films based on the simplyscripters scripts, so we wouldn't qualify for the partnership on that count alone.

We could upload the podcast, at the very least. Not sure what else would qualify.

The how-to is a good idea, though. Those could definitely be less than 10 minutes.

Just throwing it out there.

I'd think the nice thing is to see if Don wishes for this to happen, then nominate Don.  If not, then I'd say George/Michael.

I was thinking of seeing what I can do with movie maker or something else I have on this p.c.

Which is exactly what I was thinking. A lot! And I mean a lot of work!!! If I were good on the technical side of things, I would help, but I will continue to work in the areas I'm best suited. If someone needs voice over work, I would be happy to help with that. I will stay clear of fumbling around as a blind person in a dark room.

For people that love that kind of thing, well!!! Here's your chance!

I was toying with the idea of getting a camcorder this summer and try and shoot something. If it was possible, I'd turn one of the shorts into a trailer?

But then again, I'm busy. But if I could help, I will.

Thanks, Jayrex!!!

I love the fact that this edition and our guest from MoviePoet recognize short works as good territory and breaking ground for young/new writers.

Everything I've ever sent out for serious consideration has either been published or given me a special call back from judges. That's NOT a big accomplishment!!! I've only sent off two serious works. As you can see, I'm not anxious to skim something off. Point is though, they've both been short works and those short works took a very long time from their initiation to an apparent good conclusion of "Yay! You did a good job Babe!"

Here on Simply, we have challenges, and I hope that most people realize the difference between challenges and contests. Indeed, challenges are just that-- meant to challenge and the degree of challenge is always suspect, depending upon the person's degree of skill and also, what they're diving into.

A skilled writer in one genre might dip into another genre that is completely out of their territory and thus, they risk perhaps, their image where it's hard, (even for the toughest skinned individual) to take. Hey, we might write horror sometimes, but we've got hearts!!!

Fact is, writing a substantial piece that runs the distance is bloody hard to do. Sites like MoviePoet and Simply help writers because they supply an environment to work and learn and most important-- the component that I love: Experience! Can't get that from a book. Nope!

I love to see people's creativity on Youtube. If you've got passion; you've got voice!

Thanks again Jayrex!

Sandra

I don't know if people realize how groundbreaking this really is. I'm flabbergasted and as  astonished as you, S.R.!!! Let's see more people hook up here!

First off, the potential that writers have here working together on Simply is pretty gosh darn amazing. Are many of us entirely green? Yes, but we have strengths and weaknesses and loads of conflict, but also, we have something in common: Some kind of passion that is both devilish and almost like a poison, and also very sweet and intoxicating.

Having a Youtube channel, that Jayrex has worked to implement along with the newly established Simplyscripts radio makes me just wanna go "Wow! Wow! Wow!"

Especially, because I get to watch people grow up not only by virtue of the fact of their writing, but also as individuals. You can see it on the page!

I'm very excited about this and to be able to see the growth and feel it is just so wonderful. You never appreciate something unless you put a lot of effort into it and I truly hope that Don is starting to feel "the reward" of "the baby" that he conceived and
has nurtured all along.

To Don, and to everyone here that works so hard, I raise a Le Chaim!

Very thankful to be with you all,

Sandra

It's incredible more people haven't stepped up and given Jayrex props for putting this thing together.

Yo peeps, wut up!?  >

I think it's great. I just don't have anything to put up there since all my films are made by other people and I don't know that I can add them. Most of them are not online because they are pursuing the festivals and the few things I have made are not by scripts from SS.

I'm not sure, but I thought S.R. was referring to us just getting on there and making ourselves known, as in: "We're heeere."

The point is to raise your voice, say hello and BE PRESENT. That's what I'm gleaning from this. You don't need to be "the big man" of "the big woman". Just be here and add your voice.

While I haven't produced any of my work, I know that there's one produced short on youtube and a couple of trailers.

As I said earlier that, while there may not be enough to have a youtube channel, there could be a sticky thread somewhere on the boards.

If you know of any youtube videos that are ss scripts.  Put them in this thread. This way they could easily be added as favorites on the youtube channel.

I can't remember which ones are on youtube. I know that sounds weird, but.... I'll look around. I know Shelton's got a bunch. And how about the Machinimas Michael? Some SS people are involved in those. Not to mention the Dark series...

I'd post clips from Dreams in Dust and Marble, but that short is never going to see the light of day.

Thanks SR & Sandra.

JohnnyBoy came up with the idea, so thanks to him.

And even more thanks should go to Michael, Mike & Pia for creating this radio blog.  I should have emailed you guys as well to enquire on your thoughts.

I think it's going to work out fine.

We can't do it without you guys.

If anyone's on that hasn't been here for awhile. Check out this thread in its entirety.

You'll see "the plan" in action. Even when we thought there was "no plan".

I love it.

Sandra

To offer here, I'd like it to be this:

Although I enjoy fast images, I think that maybe...

And this is a big MAY BE...

You might want to denote this into a different time period and thus, not to the:

MOVE FAST IMAGES.

My question is:

Do you think you have to:

Keep up with the Assholes?

You guys are much better.

Don't:

Film FAST! ...

Because you think that's the style.

Rather...

Film your heart's story, and we, at Simplyscripts, and places such... we'll always be here for you and we'll try our best to be your upholding force.

Sandra

Sandra, It's a Trailer - not the movie itself.

You should really have the script available on the site if you want your video posted.

Michael,

I don't have a script for it, nor do I intend to write one.  It's screenwriting-related, so I figured it's close enough.  Besides, I've been a faithful member of SS for over a year.  I think I've earned a spot.

I've already put your  video up there.  I'm just saying, and this doesn't have anything to do with your credentials as a member here, generally videos do not get posted on the SS front page unless the script is on the site.  The same should be true of the YouTube site.
