Was reading the In Bruges script last night, and what a delight it was. It did raise an interesting way of doing slugs that I'd not encountered or considered before, and actually consider to be superior, so I'm stealing it. Curious what you chaps thought.
So, instead of this (or variant thereof):
INT. ANDREW'S HOUSE/KITCHEN - DAY
ANDREW sits writing a message.
INT. ANDREW'S HOUSE/BATHROOM - CONTINUOUS
DREAMSCALE writes a message, shouts out to Andrew. LAUGHS to himself.
It would go like this:
INT. ANDREW'S HOUSE - DAY
KITCHEN. ANDREW sits writing a message.
BATHROOM. DREAMSCALE writes a message, shouts out to Andrew. LAUGHS to himself.
I think it's a leaner, more effective way of doing it. Thoughts?
I thought that proper formatting usually averages out to one minute of film per page. This type of formatting would clearly break that rule. It would be crowded. I don't like it either...
The shorts in the photo are actually gracing NewYork but they did travel all over the UK as well! In the five and half months overseas, I wore just two pairs of shorts and thats it. Washed them obviously!
The cleaning highlight was in Turkey, getting them steamed clean!! They even dried and folded my undies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Re the formatting...yeah, I used it in Bloodstrom. I wanted to show quick cuts between scenes in a particular part, for more sort of atmosphere. I knew there'd be some 'contro' over it but I just went with it. Interesting response - some people loathed it and said it was hard to follow; Some liked it and could see what I was trying to do; Some didn't even mention it!!!
I think its fine to do,in certain situations. I really had to sit down and work it out before I wrote it too, so it wasn't just a throw - away sort of thing.
Bert, apologies For Jeff and Andrew veering way off topic here...
Yeah bro, I kept those shorts for ages after we got back, but the missus made me throw them out eventually.
I still have old t-shirts I bought around the world but they aren't wearable. The joggers I'm wearing, I still have and wear them when I mow the lawn. They will never be thrown out!!
I have to put all our pics on a disc one day, to preserve them. I kept a diary back then, and can remember every night of the whole trip, like where we stayed, etc, if quizzed.
The question that comes to my mind regarding the formatting is production. Assuming that "Andrew's house" is a complete location containing both rooms, this works, but if both rooms are sets and are potentially not connected geographically, they may be different days, weeks, even countries of filming. The format used in In Bruges would make this a lot more difficult for the 1st AD.
