What is the automated voice played on phones called? I plan to use this when a character calls another character, but I'm having trouble figuring this out. The voice that says things like "The number you have called is not available" or "please leave a message after the tone."

Thank you!

I think it's "automated voice recording" when it's standard and not dependent on the caller's entry (like the examples you gave), and "interactive voice response" when it reacts to a choice made by the caller.

If I'm referring to it in the prose or it appears as a character name I just say AUTOMATED VOICE. The addition of MALE or FEMALE could be specified too, up to you. Although, I have only ever heard a female tell you about voicemail/messaging, etc

ANNOYING VOICE.  lol.  Sorry, it's an annoyance of mine.  I hear it every month when I call my cable company to pay the bill.  I heard it yesterday after a freak thunderstorm knocked my internet into spastic territory of it not working properly.

Anyway, AUTOMATED VOICE is fine.  ANNOYING VOICE if you want to give it personality, and let's face it, all automated voices are bloody annoying.
