All,

I was hoping to get your opinions on the feedback that I have been providing recently in a way to gage whether or not I am providing proper and constructive feedback.

I am not a professional in anyway shape or form. I have never optioned or sold any of my work and I would hate to be feeding others improper feedback. I am solely basing my feedback off of the numerous screenplays I have read, the few courses I have taken and by the others who have provided me feedback.

If there is anyway I can improve upon this, please let me know.

Thank you all for your time.

All the best,
Marty

Hey Marty,

I've read quite a few of your posts and I think they're all pretty solid. Just keep doing what you're doing, IMO. If anything is out of line, or taken out of context, I think someone will let you know.

Cheers,
John

John,

I appreciate the reassurance from you and thank you again for taking the time to let me know that what I'm providing is worthwhile. Hopefully others will view it the same.

Think you're comments and reviews are just fine. The fact that you are making them at all is step one.

Dave,

Thank you. I appreciate it.

I went into this site with the notation that, the more work you put into it, the more you'll get out of it.
Those are my hopes at least.

All the best,
Marty

I think your comments and reviews are fine.

The best thing a writer can get on a script is feedback ... it may be just an opinion of the concept... could be detailed editing type feedback which is also good to get a script in shape. Whatever you give as feedback will hopefully help the writer. I think you are doing fine. Keep up the good work.

Just be honest in a nice way. If your going to give negatives, at least include some positives. If it's all negative, try to find something positive. lol. These projects are like your children. You gotta nurture it and strengthen it.

Just Murdered by Sean Elwood (Zombie Sean) and Gabriel Moronta (Mr. Ripley) - (Dark Comedy, Horror) All is fair in love and war. A hopeless romantic gay man resorts to bloodshed to win the coveted position of Bridesmaid. 99 pages.

I try and be honest. If it is mostly negative, I try and say why I think it is and offer possible solutions. I see what your saying.
I think also as readers, we can learn a lot by reading good scripts and bad ones.

pale yellow,

Thank you for the reassurance regarding my feedback and I appreciate your kind words.

I agree that the best thing a writer can get is feedback.
I know first hand from receiving some great pointers and critiques on this site, how much it can help you as a writer.

I will continue to try my best with giving feedback and hope that it will be viewed as helpful to some.

All the best,
Marty

Gabe,

Thank you very much for your feedback on my question about giving feedback.

I think we can always find some good even in the bad. I have read a handful of scripts on here and so far nothing that I thought was beyond repair. So that helps.

I agree, we gotta nurture and strengthen the skills.

I'll keep doing what I'm doing.

All the best,
Marty

But what should Marthy (or anyone else) do if a screenplay is completely crap, if dialogues do not work because they sound wooden and unnatural, or because the whole story does not work because the plot and characters are described in a one-dimensional way. Should he says: "Great formatting of the script?" And, what if even the formatting is wrong? Perhaps the name or the effort of the author? If a work is bad, it is bad! And that's what you should say! That all of my screenplays (with gradations) are awful, I accept that. I like to write for my life, even if the result is to run away.

Gerlinde,

I think the point that Gabe was trying to make is that behind the name of the author, rests a human. Someone with feelings and someone who has worked hard on the screenplay they submitted.

You can always find good in something if you are willing and compassionate enough to look hard and thoroughly at the writers work.

All the best,
Marty

They should say:

Dialogue sounds wooden and unnatural. The story does not work because the plot and characters are described in a one-dimensional way.

Best of luck. There is no need to make up praise. There is no need to be cruel. Being critical is not being cruel.

In this forum, I would have liked someone to tell me that my work is horrible, because it is horrible! There's nothing to gloss over that, it's a fact! Some people do it right. They tell me through the flower (in nice words) that my work is shit, but on the other hand also offer suggestions on how to change or improve something.
And, you're right, being honest doesn't mean being cruel.
