Yep James, Miike has dabbled in most genre's and is impossible to put in any sort of box, same with Sono (loved Cold Fish)... and neither are J Horror - though I'd make a case for Audition.
J Horror, I think the initial difference of it, Ring, Grudge, Dark Water gave us a very different type of horror, which as you'd expect has been appropriated by Hollywood... so it's now as familiar as anything else ;-(
May have to go watch The Happiness of the Katakuris now
Audition is a different animal IMO. I don't it fits into any particular box. Love it, though. One of my favorite films.
Yep! A completely wild, crazy, shocking animal.
I only saw it once, but loved it...but also cringed at the good stuff and yawned through the slow stuff. But, damn...when this beast strikes, it strikes hard and fast!
I don't have much preference-but I dig slashers like the first Child's Play, Elm street, Friday the 13th #6.Candyman and Tourist Trap. But I like me some vampires. I like ghost stories....and I' a sucker for Nature Gone wild. Who doesn't love Jaws?
I tend to use hybrids in my writing. One such script has creature feature, body horror, slasher, horror comedy and splatterpunk all rolled into one.
Films that draw lines from holy books seem more interesting like Rosemary's baby, The Omen or The Exorcist. Recent horror movies just put a ghost or whatever entangled in CGI shots and loud sound, the very element of fear which is the story behind the happenings or the emotional state of the victims is completely neglected.
Which horror movie cliche's bother you guys the most? For me it's the mirror jump scare. You know what I'm talking about.
A person looks into a mirror, nothing behind them. Then they open the medicine cabinet, and when they close it someone is in the mirror behind them. Cheapest jump scare ever.
Which cliche's do you guys hate? Any you actually like?

Hmm, I dunno, a lot of the horror cliches still work their magic on me.
Still, I'm a cheap drunk as well.
I don't know if it's a horror cliche as such, but I still fall for the guy/gal about to cross the road, something grabs their attention, they turn back and get bowled over by a semi. If done well, when they're set up so you really aren't expecting it, they always work a treat for me.
And a figure, glimpse of something that skitters down a dark hallway, or over a ceiling, ala Freddie, The Babadook, Japanese horror, always creeps me out,
I watched Trainspotting again the other night and that baby scene... Let's just say: hands over my eyes. That's horror of a different kind. Not a cliche, unless 'dead baby' is one.
I'm all for cliches if they're effectively done.
I don't think anyone can get away with: 'I'll be right back' anymore though.
I like most types of horror. For this challenge i hope we stay away from things like splatter and other explicit types of stories because if that is the same for everyone then each story will basically be the same. Something tears apart something (most likely human) and each person will go into explicit detail.
IMO not much fun or creativity will happen especially in a 10 page story. I hope whatever genre we get or share will have some variance in the content. 10 pages aren't a lot.
I am excited about this challenge. I just hope we don't have to do anything that delves into splatter, extreme gore, cannibalism, or the ilk.
I'm interested in reading animation, horror, sci fy, suspense, fantasy, and anything that is good. I enjoy writing the same. Looking to team with anyone!
DanC, I hear ya'. I get it. And I think I have a cool solution.
Also, the scripts are to be 10-15 pages. At least 10, no more than 15.
Tomorrow night I'm going to do the draw. I'm going to draw two sub-genres from a hat, and allow the writers to chose between the two. Or if the writer would like, they can combine the two.
Remember people, this is not an anonymous challenge. Talk about your work. I'm not saying show each other your scripts, just talk about them. Share the title and the logline, stuff like that.
Here is the list of sub genres.
Slasher Body Horror Zombies Monster Psychological Haunted House Supernatural Torture Porn Found Footage Nature Horror Cosmic Horror Gothic Horror Comedy Horror Witchcraft Splatter Cannibal Erotic Horror Giallo Dark Fantasy Science-Fiction Horror J-Horror
Wouldn't it suck if the draw was Giallo and Found Footage! Lol This is gonna be fun.
When I was young I was into horror big style. I loved it all. I'd go to the video store and get the cheesiest, goriest looking horror flick I could find. If it had fit women in it and the prospect of nudity - bonus!
I got tired of the horror film genre though. It all started to seem tired and cliche. These days I prefer my horror intertwined with superb stories, acting and production values like Penny Dreadful, Walking Dead and American Horror Story. It's less about being afraid or grossed out now for me and more about enjoying a cracking tale that just happens to include horror elements. It seems that TV can explore horror in far more depth than movies.
If I do watch a horror film it's a fun film, like Zombieland. I don't go to the cinema to watch something that's just for scares. I need to be entertained in a much broader sense. I'm just fussy I guess.
Horror films need to try new things. The last horror film to really impress me in this manner was Cabin in the Woods.

I think that's true for most of us. What teenage boy doesn't want to see naked chicks on the screen? I was the same. I saw "I dismember me" not for the story but because Samantha Fox was in it. For those too young, she was the original bad girl that every boy wanted to be with. I think her bid hit song was something like naughty girls need love too.
Oh, Zach, please don't give us two choices that are the same or that can't work together. Re-pick if you have to.
And as I said elsewhere, thanks for not having us do the same story over and over because that'd get boring quickly. Thanks also for staying away from the most obscure genres like vomit horror and the mutilation stuff like "Flowers of Flesh and Blood.". I don't think very many, if any, want to read anything that detailed or gross.
