Thanks for clarifying. I suppose there's not much we can do about the early judges if writers contact them to air grievances.

What would be interesting is if writers could pool (if entering one script into various comps) the negative responses and weigh them against the positive ones in a public thread... because, although judging is subjective, if one judge has a problem with character development and another doesn't, that doesn't come down to story subjectivity, but rather the mechanics of writing. Then a judge's credentials come into question. One of them has to be wrong.

This would give writers a better idea of the judges working for the competitions without needing to actually know who they are. We could then judge them.

I agree that this certainly would be an interesting exercise and would be a productive topic of conversation on sites such as this one. However, I'm not sure that "one of them has to be wrong."

I've seen reviews on BLACKLIST that are light years apart on their view of a script. I can't imagine that judging is that much of a different exercise.

Heck, there are completed films where one set of critics loved it and another set of critics panned it (of recent releases, Interstellar comes to mind). I'm sure we've all seen movies where we loved it and our mate hated it. Was one wrong or did they just have a different filter/point of view?

I agree that reviewing certain aspects of writing could be clearly an objective effort (e.g.,  typos, active vs. passive voice, proper use of scene headings, proper introduction of characters, etc.). I'm not quite sure that other aspects (character development, story, dialogue, premise, etc) can be objectively reviewed where there is clearly a right or wrong.

Just food for thought.

Scoob, I don't need to use a quote for your comments, but I do have to ask why you feel the need to loosely quote the intro of one of my scripts, when I simply made a comment that will most likely turn out to be true about another one of your obviously drunken posts?

How many times have you gotten loaded only to log into SS and post some drinken rant, and then, within days, apologized and said you were just hammied?  I'll answer for you - many!

And I guess I'll also thank you for the compliment, as that intro of mine must have really stuck with you for you to be able to quote from a script of mine written so many years ago.  I guess I must have done something right, huh?

As for PAGE itself and other competitions, I have mixed feelings, but have tried to steer clear of getting involved in the debate.

In fact, I actually read the first 10 or so of Dave's script that started all this back and forth and again, had to restrain myself from commenting on that script's thread, because like Dustin and others, I was quite shocked something...or really anything written like that, could advance through 2 rounds of such a prestigious comp as PAGE.

In the past, I frequently tried to steer new writers away from paying for feedback or "coverage", as I thought/knew, it was a complete waste of their money.  The reason I felt and still feel that way is much like what Dustin's been saying here - the quality/experience/knowledge of many of these "readers" is weak or even non-existent most of the time, and many of the writers paying them, are actually more knowledgeable.

Also, as Dustin correctly points out, what can one really expect from someone being paid $20 or so to read and review their 100 page screenplay, which should take at least 2 hours, if not much more, in terms of thinking about what they just read and how it makes sense or doesn't make sense?  The only peeps who would really want to do this, would be those that can't make more money doing something or anything else.

Now, one thing I think we'll all agree on is that entertainment of any kind is subjective and the best scripts or movies will not be loved by all, nor will the worst be shot down by all.

IMO, any and every professionally written script that is well thought through, should advance in the 1st round, and any and all that are poorly written and not thought through, should be trashed immediately.  If someone doesn't know how to write, and hasn't even taken the time and effort to learn, how can their work be taken seriously?  I honestly don't get it.

On the flip side, though, PAGE is well respected and there are numerous examples of writers who have placed, who have gone on to become Pro writers and even had their scripts turned into "real" movies.  For $39, that's a pretty sweet deal, IMO, and anyone who chooses to enter, and feels they may have something that has a chance can't be looked down on.

I wish the best to all who do enter.

#Aweseome! So we are all best friends! Im not reading all that shit!
Yay!

Page early deadline has passed. I entered two scripts.

When they both advance, you won't hear it from me.

Why not? Is it some weird kind of 'pointing the bone' superstition?

In all seriousness did you enter a short or feature length or both?
And, I notice you said 'when' not 'if'. Lots of luck to you Henry.

No, just a tongue-in-check reference to posts on this thread about unworthy scripts advancing in the competition.

One short, one feature. I'll post the feature here at some point.

Thanks, Libby

Quarters released

Well done to those I spotted including Henry - stumpisiam above I think - Janet, Janet and Dena,  Matias, Mr Z - of course - and wait for this one...breaking news...

Please tell me this is correct....

Jeff bush for Unforgettable. Must be the same.

Well done Jeff, that is my favourite of yours, although I liked the short What a wonderful life

Any others I missed?

I had one entry, cocked it up and am not surprised it didn't proceed. A bit of a drunk night entry...gosh...that could be taken the wrong way.

Best of luck folks.
