A guy named Carey Westbrook about submitting your screenplay into his festival? It’s a neo noir festival in LA, seven years running. He emailed me about one of my scripts and suggested I submit it. Just curious if anyone else got this.

I got it. Couldn't even get my title right and, while I do like writing neo-noir, this script wasn't one. Pass.

Got one the other day.  It was a noir of sorts, which suggested it wasn't entirely spam...

Had two more today for scripts which are not noir.  Looks like they're trawling through the site to see who bites.  I gave it a cursory look, couldn't quite figure out what they were offering or why I should bite.

Not for me.

Straight to spam.

My short scripts can be found here on my new & improved budget website:

This is my fave bit...

"If this script is submitted, it will definitely receive an award, an audience, and the live promotional event your screenwriting ability deserves.  How do I KNOW you will win an award?  I am the co-owner of this festival and I say so."

Jeez! If you are all guaranteed to receive an award, how many does this festival dish out?

I haven't looked the festival up, but I'm going to assume there is an entry fee?

Exploiting writers hopes and dreams, makes me sick, How has this guy been running this sham fest for so long? I don't get it

Some of them were for titles I'd forgotten about. Like Deathly Shade of Blue. I almost wrote back saying that script was terrible and should never be filmed. I also got another for American Shark in London, probably the worst script I've ever written.

I'm not going to lie, I feel disheartened that my scripts aren't even good enough to receive a fraudulent email lol

How many writers, who are not part of communities like this, are falling for this and entering their scripts under the promise of an award?

Clowning Around and LA Neo Noir's Response to "Phishing" Accusations.

CAREY WESTBROOK IS "PHISHING" FOR SCRIPTS is the libel many screenwriters spread on the simply scripts message board right now.  Talented screenwriters, albeit ignorant uniformed screenwriters, have joined ignorant forces to spread lies and besmirch my character. I did not know what "Phishing" was so I looked it up:

PHISHING phish·ing/'fiSHiNG/ noun: phishing: the fraudulent practice of sending emails purporting to be from reputable companies in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers.

The 2019 7th Annual L.A. Neo Noir Novel, Film, and Script Festival is real and has been real for the past seven years.  Visit:

...and lanneff.com and see for yourself our four and a half stars and dozens of reviews and celebrity documented quotes and celebrity premieres for yourself.  Listen to how excited and happy screenwriters are to be a part of our festival on our radio show on lanneff.com Google search Carey Westbrook.  IMDB search Carey Westbrook.  See how this festival is ranked in the top 100 festivals out of over 5,000 festivals, and hailed by L.A. Weekly as the festival with "The World's Sexiest, Darkest, Crime Short Films."

I encourage you to place this post on the simply scripts message board, and if you go to submit your script through filmfreeway.com/laneonoir in the FEARLESS SIMPLY SCRIPTS WRITERS category, you may enter $5 cheaper than the current rate.  Because I know from doing this for several years, most people are too scared to try new things and only four out of 100 writers will even take me up on this offer,  I offer this promise until January 1st:  Every neo noir writer (this includes you and your script, Clowning Around) who enters through filmfreeway through the FEARLESS SIMPLY SCRIPTS category, will be accepted into this festival and we will show an excerpt of your script as a movie at our festival.  Enter the festival and see what it's about so that you may criticize it with an informed critique.  You must have a script on simply scripts to be a part of this.  We are making this offer until January 1st.  I cannot make this comment on the simply scripts message board and respond to my critics because I am not a simply scripts member and I no longer write scripts.  I only make Academy Award nominated producers of scriptwriters.  So put some respect on my name.

Unbelievable

P.S If you read this for some reason Carey Westbrook - Nobody claimed you or your festival don't exist, we (well, I am, I can't speak for others) are questioning your unethical methods of luring in as many script writers as possible to enter (and pay the fee) under the pretence you have read, or even care about the scripts you mention, and the promise of an award - You do not even do it subtly, sending the same copy and paste message several times to the same person. Exploiting the dreams of screenwriters for financial gain is deplorable

Hi ya'll, I've received a couple of emails from these guys. They found two of my 'noir' scripts on here and suggest I enter them. I know it's a way of getting people to submit to make more money but it is legit, it's just in 'baby' stage at the moment.

Has anyone else had an email from these guys? Or has anyone entered this one?

Cheers K

Kirsten - I've not seen the email you've got, but mine clearly states that I will get an Award

"If this script is submitted, it will definitely receive an award"

They guarantee it because the person who emailed me is the organiser.

"How do I KNOW you will win an award?  I am the co-owner of this festival and I say so."

So no judging panel, quality of other scripts is irrelevant, any normal criteria for winning is out of the window etc

Just pay $25 and get an award, unethical and devaules this award to be worthless

I never get scammed or anything on this site, it's not fair!

I tell you what I do get through. Every time I enter a competition or film festival and tweet it, I get several obscures festivals following me, they then try to get me to enter theirs, unfollow me only to follow me again the next time I tweet something similar.

I think it's the equivalent of ambulance chasers.

By the way, no one here used the word "phishing". That would have been a serious accusation, but no one made it.

The words "fishing" and "trawling" were used to describe the indiscriminate nature of the solicitations.

I asked what Award I was going to win, here's my response...

"Hello, Anthony!

Your award depends on all the items our sponsors will give us this year,
and whatever we make up.  Currently, there's best screenplay, best scene, best dialogue, etc.,
So I can't tell you what you'll win.  I can only tell you that you will win something, and something
is better than nothing.  If you really want to know you'll have to get in and find out.
Thank you for your interest in the L.A. Neo Noir Novel, Film, and Script Festival.

Neo Noir Cheers,

Carey Westbrook
Director"

My favourite review on the festival website comes from Jean Barker in May 2018:

"This was a strange festival. They screened the films on a TV in a conference room using the TV speakers. Oddly, they didn't screen some of the shorts they gave prizes to. No photos, none of that usual stuff. They handed out tons of awards - perhaps too many. The animations made based on the scripts were hilarious - but not really representative of the scripts at all because all the female characters wound up wearing bikinis for some reason. I would say this is something to enter to ratchet up your credits, but not a festival to fly cross-country for, so I was glad I already lived in LA."

[face=Courier]So there you go. Carey's seen the skepticism, and apparently feels he's been unfairly criticized. He asks that someone at SS posts his email response to this. Fair enough.

And since he's watching and reading, I will now chime in.

The methods do seem a bit unusual, you have to admit. It is one thing if you simply announced the contest/festival and nothing more,  If that were the case, nobody would be skeptical. They would simply note that the LA NeoNoir is a recent (although obscure) comp. It focuses on a specific genre and sub genre. But... when you make the following statements in our inboxes:

Quoted Text
"Writer's Script" is a great screenplay that speaks to the heart of what people love about film noir / neo noir.  We hope you will submit this script to The 2019 7th Annual LA Neo Noir Novel, Film, and Script Festival

Let's take my script, Breaking Eggs.  I'm pretty sure you didn't read it. Heck, I'm pretty sure you didn't read 99% of anyone's short scripts. Breaking Eggs is a thriller, yes, but Noir it is not. It's more on a psychological horror side. But anyway, it isn't the point. Why, if you have read these scripts, "great screenplay" does anyone have to enter said script in your comp? So, again, you have to understand the skepticism. It's fair. Plus, you send out more than one email to the writers, with the same pitch, only with the titles of our short scripts being what's different. Maybe if it was just one and not jam up the inbox, it might not warrant skepticism.

How do I KNOW you will win an award?  I am the co-owner of this festival and I say so.

Then everyone who enters is a winner and gets an award? Like a participation award? Now a "discount" for SS members? Our prizes include a tour of The Bradbury? A burlesque show? 100 dollars? (Your site mentions those; not the emails)

And "who" are the "Academy award winners" that you helped? Odd you don't name them on your site.

As for what I meant by "sub genre"---ifor some reason, I just can't help but think of the Erotic thrillers from the mid 90s that cropped up on Cinemax and/or video chains. Low budget, thin plot, mindset in the gutter.

So...you have to be fair with us too. You have to understand the skepticism.
Most folks try for the big comps that have more weight, but niche comps have their place and time.

Peace out.

Well said. Don't think anyone has any problem with folks marketing their festivals here. The train comes off their rails when there is an implication that they read ones specific script and found that specific script to be worthy of award. That's the dishonest part.

This guy/girl is obviously a fraud. A criminal using the word libel is a funny. Every single email sent to every one of us (I had 4) were cut n pasted save for script title and author name. I also got the same email as Darren.

This guy/girl is another failed writer trying to make a quick buck from other writers. Simple as that.

Reread this shit:

Because I know from doing this for several years, most people are too scared to try new things and only four out of 100 writers will even take me up on this offer,  I offer this promise until January 1st.

What a dumb mofo. You would have to be dumb as fuck to fall for this scam.

My latest interaction with Carey

Carey

I am happy to place this on SimplyScripts... will do later today with my email content included.

From my perspective, here are my personal thoughts on your approach.

1) I have received emails from you for two of my scripts, it would have been better to just send one as they are exactly the same emails with just the script title changed.
2) I didn’t accuse you of Phishing, but your actions do border on spamming as the email contact is entirely unsolicited, sent to multiple people and for advertising purposes.
3) Promising writers that they will definitely win an award before you have even read the script doesn’t sit well with me at all, where is the ‘competition’ element in that.
4) It seems to me that what you are actually saying is buy an award from me for $25... this isn’t how screenwriting competitions – or any competition – are supposed to be run.
5) For me personally I see absolutely no value in an award from your festival or any other when I am just buying it.
6) I think your are devaluing your brand in taking this approach - I would urge you to reconsider your marketing strategy.

And so we are clear, these are my opinions – I don’t need a response to them.

Best

Anthony

Subject: A Face In The Crowd and LA Neo Noir's Response to "Phishing" Accusations

CAREY WESTBROOK IS "PHISHING" FOR SCRIPTS is the libel many screenwriters spread on the simply scripts message board right now.  Talented screenwriters, albeit ignorant uniformed screenwriters, have joined ignorant forces to spread lies and besmirch my flawless reputation.

Visit:

http://www.filmfreeway.com/laneonoir

...and lanneff.com and see for yourself our four and a half stars and dozens of reviews and celebrity documented quotes and celebrity premieres for yourself.

I encourage you to place this post on the simply scripts message board, and if you go to submit your script through the FEARLESS SIMPLY SCRIPTS WRITERS category, you may enter $5 cheaper than the current rate.  Because I know from doing this for several years, most people are too scared to try new things and only four out of 100 writers will even take me up on this offer,  I offer this promise until January 1st:  Every neo noir writer (this includes you and your script, A Face In The Crowd) who enters through filmfreeway through the FEARLESS SIMPLY SCRIPTS category, will be accepted into this festival and we will show an excerpt of your script as a movie at our festival.  Enter the festival and see what it's about so that you may criticize it with an informed critique.  We are making this offer until January 1st.  I cannot make this comment on the simply scripts message board and respond to my critics because I am not a simply scripts member and I no longer write scripts.  I only make Academy Award nominated producers of scriptwriters.  So put some respect on my name.

He makes producers of scriptwriters. What a joke. No wonder he gave up writing. I would have too if I was him.

I got a second (non phishing clarification email ) with the $5 off for SSers rate.

I'm most curious about this:

Every neo noir writer (this includes you and your script, Life On A Dime) who enters through filmfreeway through the FEARLESS SIMPLY SCRIPTS category, will be accepted into this festival and we will show an excerpt of your script as a movie at our festival.

An excerpt of my script as a movie?

From reading the reviews, they make short animations of the scripts - and from the sounds of it, not very good ones.

Whatever it is, it will be a pile of shite even if they come through.

This puts me in mind of something I discovered a couple years ago about 90% of festivals. I know of producers of short films that set up festivals themselves and enter their own film. Obviously, their film is going to win. Not only that, but they also rake in entry fees from films and scripts while they're at it. It's not a regulated industry, so unscrupulous people can get away with it.

An excerpt of your script as a movie could be shown and proven to be shown, merely by taking a block of text from your script and filming it - the actual text. This is then shown at a venue - could be anywhere - to a certain group of 'witnesses'. Not that they need to go there. How many can afford to sue? Most of the people that fall for this type of scam are poor (more desperate). These guys are bottom feeders... just like most festival conmen... or should that be con-people now?

Notice on our winners page the number of people who REPEATEDLY come back to our festival every year.  You would think after SEVEN YEARS of doing this, over 1,000 films and scripts as movies screened, if some nefarious distasteful scam was taking place there would be ONE report of someone being scammed somewhere.  I don't do this festival because I say it's great.  I do this festival because YOU, the screenwriter, say it's great, and you keep coming back, year after year, letting me know you are LOVING IT.  Look at my track record and look at the record of my uniformed critics who have never met me, never have been or attended ANY of my festivals, and most have no track record of their owns.

Very disappointed that I didn't get an email telling me of my certainty of winning.

This is like the scene from "A Christmas Story" where the dad is telling everyone he won a major award and the award turns out to be a leg lamp in fishnet stockings.

As if this guy is still sending out these emails to SS members lol

In a completely unrelated note that has absolutely nothing to do with this thread, please keep an eye out for my new short "Sham-Fest"

I am running a competition for 'Best Logline'. If you submit a logline for the above short, you are GUARANTEED to win. How do I know? Because I wrote the thing and I say so!

Thanks

Haha! I’m in, dude. Wouldn’t want to tarnish your good name.

The initial thing that got me about my first email from this comp was the short of mine that he’d chosen — Close To Sunset. Now, the emails do look cheesy and form with my name and his name added. Nothing personal about them. But my Close To Sunset Short is probably the best thing I’ve written, and I’m like, Wow—someone finally recognized it. But of course, then came subsequent emails and, well, you know the rest.

And there lies my biggest issue with the whole thing, and why I will not put 'respect' on his name despite his pleas.

Scripts are our creations, our art, we put a lot into them. Once we have our creations, we put them out there, we open ourselves up for criticism and (hopefully) praise,  in the hope that someone in the biz will take a liking and bring our creations to life, or at least give us some recognition of our work.

So when a *censored* comes along, preys on our hopes and takes advantage of our dreams by pretending they have read and like our creations, it pisses me off annoys me.

Then to have the audacity to defend himself by insulting us? beggars belief.

When I was a kid, I wrote a poem, sent it into a competition I found online. I got a letter back telling me how great it was, how it got to the final of some prize. I was so excited I showed my Mom, who was proud - anyway - i researched them afterwards and it was a sham, everyone won - Then I had to tell my mom - I can tell ya, it bloody hurt.

It's strange and pointless. The guy who runs it is also an unethical douche who targets writers hopes and dreams... I forget his name

There's a thread from a few months back where this guy sent countless emails to several SS members (sometimes multiple emails) with the same cut and paste message (basically saying he loved *insert script title* and if the writer submitted it to his festival it would deffo win a prize)

Unless this is a different L.A neo noir film festival? I doubt it

The spirit of the Lord woke me up in the midnight hour. I know it was the spirit of the Lord because up until that time I had secretly been an atheist, but once the voice was heard, there was certainly no mistaking it. I heard it say, “show me the Black cartoon animals.” I replied, “Lord, there are too many to name, but the most famous, I suspect is the donkey from Shrek.” I went back to sleep, but the voice woke me up again. “Show me the Black cartoon animals.” I shouted back to voice, “Google it. I already pointed you in the right direction with the Eddie Murphy’s donkey in Shrek.” The voice replied, “That’s not a Black cartoon animal. That’s a White cartoon animal created by White people, with a Black man’s voice…show me the Black cartoon animal.” There are no Black cartoon animals. Snoopy, Mickey Mouse, Tom and Jerry…since the beginning comic strips in the 1920’s until today, there is no Black cartoon / comic strip animal of any notoriety created by a Black person or ANY person of color…”There are no Black cartoon animals, Lord.” I heard the voice one last time say, “Show me the Black cartoon animals.” That night, Pugwooly was born…

This shit is too funny. A secret atheist? Christians still burning people where he's from?

The black cartoon animal is hilarious. The donkey from Shrek is actually white. Wow.

I was never contacted directly about this contest.  I just happened to find it in my search for a film noir based screenplay contest.  After a few months, I just saw that I'm in the top 45 of what they're calling Best Iconic Script Awards.  The filmfreeway site suggests that there's quarters, semis, and finalists but there's only a Best Of list up to 45 scripts.  I still don't know if there will be an official finalists list or if this is it.

I'm in a horror writing/filmmaking group on Facebook and today one guy was thrilled to announce he was one of the winnerss for Best Iconic Neo Noir Screenplay at the LA Neo Noir Film Festival (2019) - he seemed really pleased but I have no idea what any of it means. The digital laurel is appealingly bad as well.

It means nothing... just like most of the other festivals out there, but there you go.

I think winning the OWC WT carries more gravitas. I can already see a digital laurel with the crappy mug on it.
