The primary purpose of the SimplyScripts Discussion Board is the discussion of unproduced screenplays. If you are a producer or director lookng for your next project, the works here are available for option, purchase or production only if you receive permission from the author.
NOTE: these screenplays are NOT in the public domain and MAY NOT be used or reproduced for any purpose (including eductional purposes) without the expressedwrittenpermission of the author.
It's just another cynical pay-to-win scam preying upon the hopes and dreams of aspiring screenwriters.
They're parasites and it's all any of them have ever been.
Do not waste your money on screenwriting contests, coverage services, or consultants. They can't help you and they wouldn't even if they could. They exist only to help themselves at your expense.
Interdependent Studios (the ones running the contest) has been around for several years and has never produced anything. The base concept of the studio is kind of an interesting one.
It seems to me that Interedpendent Studio is essentially trying to launch sweat-equity filmmaking. e.g., everyone (writers, actors, directors, crew) works for no cash compensation upfront in exchange for a share of the proceeds of a particular film should it get filmed, sold, and distributed. Kind of like (a) get a scriptfor free (b) get volunteers to work on making a trailer based on the script for free (c) use the trailer to lure money into production.
Many writers have taken no money up front for a share of future film profits. Without debating whether that is wise or not, what the Interdependent concept does is expand that concept to all (actors, directors, cameraman, sound techs, etc.etc) involved in making a money and then all sharing in any proceeds the movie makes.
What has never been clear (and one of the reasons this has no chance of working) is where does the money for those things that cannot be funded by the sweat-equity of humans come from? e.g., filming permits, equipment, special effects, catering, props, etc.)? There are no investors - or at least none of been disclosed. They also have no published distribution strategy for completed films, or a detailed revenue distribution model (e.g., the cut of the participants and how is it calculated).
Beyond the above, there is the question of why would anyone believe that this model would ever work? i.e., the model is: get people to do a trailer through sweat equity, then use that trailer to attract investor money to make a film.
Trailers come after movies are made, not before. There are huge logic problems trying to do it backward (like how do you even know the actors you had in a trailer made before a movie is made will be around later when you theoretically get the money to film the entire movie, etc, etc).
AND ...
We are ALREADY at the point where if you want a investment trailer for a script, AI is more than capable of doing that.
Bottom-line - I WOULD STAY THE EFF AWAY from this company.
And I say that saying I think there is a place for the sweat-equity model in filmaking. e.g., if some investor came along with a million bucks and said I want to make a film with sweat equity writers, actors, directors, camera and sound techs, etc all who will receive a share of proceeds for their contributions - fine - cool - I'm probably in. Interdependent Studio is not that.
