The first OWC of the new year is almost upon us (as is the new year).  I'll be announcing the theme and genre on January 2nd.  There will be something a little different this time around, a little twist, something to make it a little more of a challenge.

For those of you unfamiliar with the OWC, it is a little non-competition that we do a few times a year at SS.  A genre and theme is announced and those wishing to participate have a week to write and submit a short script based on the genre and theme.

The whole idea behind this is to see how well you can write under pressure.  Imagine if a filmmaker asked you to write a comedy about an antique salt shaker.  Could you do it in a week?

This will be the ninth time we're doing the challenge and some of these scripts have been incredibly good.

Wow. It's OWC time again already. The last one didn't seem that long ago...

Anyway, these things are always fun to read. Should be good.

Cool!!

I'll try to participate again... Unless I'm not happy with the assignment and start a big "bajs storm" again that I have to apologize for later...

I'll be good! Promise!

THis one will be different from previous OWC's, in that I'll need some committments to it before it begins.  I'll explain why after Christmas.

The OWC starts this Friday night  (wait for the cheers to die down.  good).

This challenge will be a little different, just to mix things up a bit.  For starters, it will be a two week challenge (more cheers.  wait for silence.  good).

This challenge will a two week challenge for a special reason (one person briefly cheers, but realizes he should and quickly shuts up.  others roll their eyes).

This challenge will be a two week challenge because everyone will need the extra time to e-mail their scripts back and forth with their writing partners (numerous gasps ring out from the crowd).

Writers will be teamed up for this particular challenge.  This is why I mentioned, earlier, that some commitment will be needed.  We don't want anyone losing interest in this (someone cuts one.  everyone looks at mcornetto).

If you are interested in participating and can commit, please send me a pm with the header 'Two week challenge.'  Please include your real name in the e-mail.

(phil leaves the podium.  everyone shouts questions at him. mcornetto giggles quietly).

I'm guessing the pairings will be assigned via some sort of numbering system, based on the order Phil receives entrants.

I'm going the Charlie/Donald Kaufman route, myself.

Pia?  C'mon now...

I do not hate you or your scripts.  I don't even think your humor completely sucks.

And...remember...it's still the Holiday Season...and that means that I have to be semi-nice to people throughout it. Well, at least I'm trying.  It's not always easy, obviously, with all these Goddamned, idiot, motherfuckering pieces of complete shit...but I still try.

I'll be nice...but...Phil!  Come on man, don't pair me up with that blonde, blood sucking chick!!!!

MBC!!!!!  She's in...nice.

Hey, I really liked your "Spirit Men" entry in the last OWC.   Not my cup of tea in terms of subject matter, but I thought you hit it pretty well, in terms of a "Goonie"-like quick story.  Also, appreciated the real "horror" at the very end.  One of the few that actually walked the wire in between the squeaky clean and the potential "real" horror.  Loved how you ended it!

See Pia, I can be nice!

Thanks a bunch for that DS...It was my first attempt at screenwriting.  You really have to use yur noggin to write in "show not tell" fashion.

I am excited for this new challenge as I do well when the topic is picked for me! *wink

There are some people on this planet that really are nice. But most of us are a bunch of wannabe nice people. We might be able to manage it for awhile, but then we slip back to our animal natures.

It's probably better to be a true asshole than a lying nice person.

Here's to assholes everywhere!

LOL-- notice how the swear checker didn't catch the second one? Must be the good intention behind the toast.

It's been while since I've participated in one of these. This could be a good way to get me back into writing mode. I'm in.

Oh, and as for who Balt is/was. He was an interesting member who wasn't afraid to speak his mind. If he didn't like your script it "sucked goat nuts and porked chickens in the butt".

Imagine Dreamscale when he didn't like something. Oh, my script Jagged comes to mind. Now, infuse that high-protein opinionatedness with some ridiculous profanity (sucks goats' balls, anyone?), about 70kg of caffeine (your average cup of coffee contains about 150mg), and a general bad attitude, and you have Balt.

If he did not like your script, you knew it. Oh God, how he made it known how bad he hated it.

But on the flip side, if you got a compliment, the world revolved around you for a bit.

Thanks Zack.

I've got a lot of reading to do and I don't want to waste my time on easy put downs-- we're all subject to that kind of thing no matter what.

To just consider the put downs of The Big Time Hits encourages us to wonder "What makes a good show anyways?"

I'll keep reading the works from the people I respect and no matter what any critic tells me, my word will be final in my books.

I'm sure the pipes are very happy, Mike.

About ten people have pm'ed me, so far.  And those willing to participate need to pm me!  (*cough* Pia *cough*).  The order that people pm me is a big factor in how I set up the teams.

The genre and theme will be announced this Friday night (NYC time).

Yes... the script is, what's the word, shit-tastic. However, being that it was my first screenplay, I do think his review was a bit harsh. This is off topic, so I'll shut up now.

I'll announce the teams when I announce the genre and theme.

The teams will be chosen, mostly, by the order of PMs.  I'll make changes if a team consists of two very experienced people or two new people.

Sorry but I won't be able to participate because I'm starting a new job in one week. If this were a one week thing, like usual, then I would have been able to do it.

Cheers.

Our thoughts will still be with you Michael. Every good wish for you in this new venue is sent.

We're with you!

Love from myself and the group,

The gate for the January 2009 challenge is now closed and no one else may enter.  Sorry.  You snooze.  You lose.

For those unfamiliar with the OWC (though it is now a two week challenge), I will go over the rules:

Each team has two weeks to come up with a short script (15 pages maximum) based on the genre and theme chosen for this competition.  If the genre and theme were science fiction and ‘solving the food shortage,’ you would have to write a sci-fi script that deals with solving the food shortage.  Mentioning the shortage and writing a story about the auto industry isn’t enough.

Scripts must be submitted by January 16th, 11:59pm, EST.

The teams are listed below.  Those participating must submit one copy of their script to Don.  Even if one member of the team sits on his or her ass the entire time, not working on said script, it must be submitted as a joint venture.

No betting!

Don’t come bitching to me, or anyone else, if your writing partner isn’t doing his or her share.  I don’t care!

Don’t come bitching to me, or anyone else, if you don’t like your writing partner.  I don’t care!

Don’t come bitching to me, or anyone else, if—well, just don’t!  I don’t care!

The teams are as follows:

GM Miles  &  Stebrown;
Dreamscale  &  Stevie;
George Willson  &  Sandra E;
MBCGirl  &  Shelton;
The Boy Who Could Fly  &  Me;
Higgonaitor  & Tommy P;
Zack,  Nixon  &  James R.

Yes, the last team has three people in it.  The end result of an odd number of entrants.

And now for the genre and theme:

Genre:  Comedy
Theme:  A pedophile priest.

On second thought, it should be the example provided above in the rules.  Don't do the priest script.  Really.

Enjoy yourselves.

I love words and the fact that when the page is blank...there's nothing there until words are formulated in my brain. Those thoughts...rushing through my viens and out my finger tips, find "life" on the page.

When people and places come to life...that to me is exciting.

Just in case anyone is unfamiliar with this uber-famous sci-fi movie from 1973 involving the solution to a food shortage, here's the imdb link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070723/

And while I hate spoiling a movie, this twist is probably more famous than Luke's lineage in The Empire Strikes Back, so as Phil suggested, let's try to be more creative than cannibalism...

When I saw the theme, I immediately thought of Soylent Green, much the way the Shiva game immediately reminded me of the Stand.

EDIT: How about that? 3000 posts...again.

You know, there was a reason I kept changing Phil's post and redacting the Soylent Green reference, but I'm not about to go back and forth on that for two weeks, and I'd like to think I'm far more original than that anyway.

Doesn't mean I can't mess with people though.

Nicely done this time, Phil -- but must they be posted anonymously?  That isn't written in stone, is it?

There are only a few, which should make it fairly easy to guess -- (at least for a couple **coughPiaJordancough**) -- and frankly, I think I would enjoy the reading much more knowing the team behind them.

Frankly, I'd rather have the Soylent Green reference out there right from the beginning. In my opinion, this one will be more difficult for some because he picked a topic that has a well known movie behind it. This is the kind of thing that a producer would do. He'd see a hit movie, and say "I want something like that." But of course, you have to take your own original twist on that used topic. I like this one BECAUSE it's been done before. We just have to do our own take on it so that we're original even though the topic isn't.

Nice choice, Phil.

And I think the reason originally for the anonymous posting was to prevent sort of "preferential reading and commenting." You're more likely to be honest in some cases if you don't know the person who posted. In addition, some people are more likely to be read if their identity isn't known.

But on this one, there aren't even going to be a full dozen and it looks like everyone is a regular, so the anonymity probably isn't necessary. This may yield some of the best OWC scripts to date.

Actually, I think a producer would come to someone and say "Hey, we're remaking Soylent Green.  Care to pitch us your take on it?" And they would make their pitch and try to change a few things here and there before ultimately ending it with that one line that just about everyone on God's green Earth knows, and it would be fresh and everybody would go see it, and it would make $100 million dollars at the box office before half the people who went to see it even realized it's a remake.

Now, if it's the Asylum, that's a totally different scenario because they would want you to write Soylent Green, but it wouldn't be Soylent Green.  It would be called Wheatlent Blue or some crap, and Thorn would be changed to Rose.  You know, just enough to avoid lawsuits.

The saying from Ecclesiastes, "There's nothing new under the sun," is what comes to mind here. Indeed, nothing new-- it's only the packaging that changes.

I agree that it's good to have a reference point in style. Our creativity in twisting the same old into a new shape is always a challenge and reference to anything done or not, the challenge is the same.

This challenge will give me the opportunity to watch the movie and attend to my New Year's resolution: To watch more movies. I'll never be on par with Michael Shelton in that department, but it's definitely a must.

I just realized that it's a two week challenge which is interesting.

No, the length is still the same as for most shorts.
15 page max if I remember correctly, but check the guidelines to make sure.

15 page max on the story, and as of now they're supposed to be submitted anonymously, but some of us are against that.

Zack, it's an old people's joke I think. There used to be an oatmeal commercial and that was the slogan.

But keep wondering. It's good for you. Do a find/replace with oatmeal and insert "Wondering".

Anonymity seems pretty pointless with only 7 scripts.

I wouldn't go that far.  If it's easy to spot, it's easy to spot.  You start getting into retooling your style to make your self unidentifiable, and your script suffers for it.

I understand what you're saying, but I'm wondering if it might also be a challenge-- to do it successfully.

I don't want to sacrifice what's inherent, but maybe I can figure out a way to change certain aspects. Come to think of it, that's starting to sound really hard. ;

God has everything to do with it. If it's just you, then you Phil, are God.

And if nobody is talking to anybody,

Then this board will come to a crashing halt... (crashing halt-- LOL)

And that wouldn't be good for business.

We're both very busy discussing Soylent Green. We're completely devoted to the extremeness of food shortages, the neglect of basic human needs...

We're discussing the role of The Priest...

Do you believe a word I tell you?

Either or...I'm kind of with Pia...it's a bit of a game to try to figure out who wrote what...but with regard to whether it's important...it isn't since there are only 7 teams.

I love words and the fact that when the page is blank...there's nothing there until words are formulated in my brain. Those thoughts...rushing through my viens and out my finger tips, find "life" on the page.

When people and places come to life...that to me is exciting.

Or we can use a secret code that has either 4 letters or 11 letters from one of both of our names...or from any known animal east of the Mississippi.  Or we could use NFL team names from cities we've never personally visited.

Ok, I've got a good idea. I'm going to try my best to disguise what I write and I'll try and figure out some kind of hint to put in the script to let you all know it's me.

Maybe that kind of idea would be a fun challenge, not that I'm not already challenged LOL

Seriously, if I start writing amphisbaenas into the 2WC then I think that's a pretty good tip off.

I want to apologize to my partner, Steve for not being available and doing very little withthis challenge so far.  He's been on teh ball form day 1, and this is completely my fault.  I've been sick and have had major computer problems.  The computer issues are fixed now and I'm starting to feel better.

We will meet this challenge 1 way or another.  All blame for a crappy script should go to me though, but hopefuly, we can still put together a kickass script.

Tommy and I wrote ours the first night.  The second night was spent editing.  The third night we sent it to a contest.  The fourth night the people at the contest read it.  The fifth night they gave us the three million dollar prize and told us they loved it and wanted to make a short film.  The sixth night we turned them down (still took the 3 mil) because one of their execs looked at me funny.  The seventh day we rested. The eighth day we decided that that script didnt meet what we thought could be our best effort, so we trashed it.  The ninth day we used what we learned from our mistakes to outline a new, super script.  Yesterday, we wrote it.  Today, we've been editing.

So yeah, you're all waaaaaaaaaaaaay behind the ball and about to get destroyed in this Faux One Week Competition.

(It's funny that it's now neither one week, nor a competition.  It's like calling a stick of butter an iPod.)

Just a taste

INT. SPACE AGE APARTMENT - NIGHT

A top notch, sci-fi apartment, made prevalent by all the futuristic gadgets strewn about.  They're futuristic because you've never seen them before.  You don't live in the future.  You live here.

A young man, we'll call him X74232 (because that's a futuristic, sci-fi sounding name) rummages through his cabinets.  There's no food.  It's a "food shortage"...cue dramatic music.

A box of futuristic, sci-fi cereal?  Empty.

An old container of milk?  Who are we kidding?  There will be no cows in the future.

And then, there it is, a green, hockey puck looking thing.  A futuristic Ding Dong cake.  Or is it?

He takes the "cake", places it in a microwave (those things rock, they'll never be replaced) and moments later, a weeks worth of fresh groceries.

The food shortage is solved, and X74232 is free to go back to his mundane life, spending way too much time looking at internet porn (internet porn rocks, it'll never be replaced) and visiting his orgasm closet (somebody invent this).

funny people!  Is everyone famished and living in the twilight zone!  Shelton...you are VERY funny partner!

I love words and the fact that when the page is blank...there's nothing there until words are formulated in my brain. Those thoughts...rushing through my viens and out my finger tips, find "life" on the page.

When people and places come to life...that to me is exciting.

Luckily, I can tell the difference between being laughed with and laughed at.

Next time you're in bed, try telling a few jokes.  If they're funny, you'll notice a difference in that laugh versus the reaction of seeing your "winky".

Problem with that is I would run the risk of waking her up. Maybe some mimes might be better suited in my case.

Might change how people look at mimes when they do that stuck-in-a-box routine.

I'm hoping to do more PITA one week challenges.  The next one wil be a regular OWC.  The one after that (or two after that) will be the straight forward ones; it'll then be followed by another challenge with a twist.

hi phil. i had a belated good idea for a challenge. the pairs could have done one of the xxx scripts that SWK was after! imagine the carnage!

then we could've auctioned the best script to the hardest, sorry, highest bidder.

ok i know. get back to proper writing instead of browsing SS ...

Sorry, but internet porn is meant to be looked at, not read.  Besides, I don't want to read what some people here find erotic.

You haven't lived until you've watched 8 minutes worth of footage where a woman gets repeatedly slapped in the ass with a red rope licorice by a guy wearing a Tor Johnson mask.  You just haven't.

So, this might sort of be heresy, but since there are only going to be seven scripts, and we've had two weeks to work on them, and had two people pouring ideas into it, any chance we could all sort of agree to be a bit lenient about the page count?

Nothing crazy, just like 3-4 pages.

Just putting it out there. Feel free to shoot it down.

Jordan and I are waiting for Friday night. We both feel we do better writing while under the influence. We're also used to writing our OWC scripts at the last minute. Also since he's in a time zone three hours later than me I don't feel stressed at all. Those extra three hours are a BIG bonus!

Same with Steve and I. We'll wait until the last night.  He's 18 hours away from me in time zone.

Let's cut it to 3 pages!!!!  I think we can meet that length.

I meant 3-4 pages over.

I've never had a problem with meeting the length requirement before--in fact, usually I have a buffer zone of a few pages.  But if no one else is having that problem, 15 pages it is.

Timezones not really helping our collaboration out too much yet but think we are getting there. We took the approach of splitting the story out into scenes and each writing our share. We will probably be spending Friday mashing them together and seeing if there is any kind of script in there.

It is an interesting experiment whatever comes of it.

Shelton and I are only a few hours apart...but then I was on Whidbey Island with no internet access for 5 days!

It's not that easy to collaborate by email...I think msn or yahoo chat should have come into play with webcam for facial expressions!! lol  Not sure if that is against the rules.    But it would be a lot easier to carry on a conversation.

In reality...I think the scripts will be pretty interesting.   Looking forward to them, especially the ones with the wacky time zones apart!

Yaaa...hhhhhhooooooooooooooooooo

Well I lucked out because Zack and Nixon have been excellent partners. We worked so well together that we actually wrote a feature length script based on our OWC/2WC and Universal, Paramount, Disney and DreamWorks are all in a bidding war over it. We will all soon be moving in together to write day and night as the Ultimate Writing Force (UWF) on a floating island off the coast of the Mississippi River.

Sit in that and stew!

And Mike, be nice to girls.

Tommy and I sold ours to aliens from a far off galaxy who were gonna destroy our planet to make room for an cross-universal super highway, but have decided to re-route and spare us for the magical art we produce.

So, yeah, our script was so good it saved the world.

When I was in college, my hair started turning grey and my friends all laughed.  Today, over twenty years year, my hair is still partially grey.  All my friends, however, have skin colored hair now.

You're my bitch.

Stop lying, Phil.  We all know you don't have any friends.

When you come up with a better response than the equivalent of "your face", I may allow you to exist in your own little world where you think that's true.  Until then...

OK you 2!  Enough already!  Get abck to work on your scripts.  You're going to need to be on your A Game, cause Steve and I are now all over it.  We just got a call from Dreamworks...first offer, which we turned down, was $150,000.  We feel this "epic" is worth at least $250,000.

I love words and the fact that when the page is blank...there's nothing there until words are formulated in my brain. Those thoughts...rushing through my viens and out my finger tips, find "life" on the page.

Ok, we're ready to submit.

Is there a special place for this 2WC submission? Or do we just use the regular submission spot on the main page?

PS  Ours is the one that takes place in the future and has a sci-fi and food shortage plotline.

Cute picture of you and your boy Shelton...

Thought I'd throw in one of me and my baby girl. lol   She's 31...ouch!

I love words and the fact that when the page is blank...there's nothing there until words are formulated in my brain. Those thoughts...rushing through my viens and out my finger tips, find "life" on the page.

When people and places come to life...that to me is exciting.

My finger nails should look nice while I type - Red works!

Sweet,  I've actually been working on a harem as of late.  Kills time in between those brief periods that I'm not working on scripts.

Are we supposed to receive a reply back after we've put in our submission?

I just wanted to say thanks for coming up with this challenge. It was hard!

I have tried in the past to co-write with someone and it's tough since most people don't think alike, don't write alike and in our case don't even use compatible writing programs.

It was a good excersise to do. Often the produced screenplays are written by a team. if two people can find a way to write together, I do think it adds to the script since two minds know more than one.

I was surprised that more people didn't participate in this, really.  It was harder than the usual challenges, which I thought would be a draw.

At the same time, it'll be easier for everyone (especially Don) to go through seven scripts.  Didn't the last one have about forty entries in it?

Sounds like a really cool challenge, too bad I only joined this forum last week! I'll surely participate in the next one!

I will return reads as fast as possible!

My scripts:

Shattered - Short: Two men who meet each other in a prison cell find that they have more in common than they'd like...

Tough as Pins (work in progress)
Bulletbound (work in progress)

I had a lot of fun this time around. I'd like to thank both of my partners. You guys are great. Hopefully we'll write another script together. Also thank you Phil, for getting this whole thing together.

You enjoyed it Zack?  That's funny because James and Nixon didn't stop pm'ing me, complaining about having to work with you and how much of a lazy primadonna you were.
