Welcome to the July 2018 OWC. Your challenge, should you chose to partake, is to write a properly formatted script 6 pages max, not including the title page.
The scripts are due on Friday, August 3rd at 11:59PM EST and must be submitted to: SimplyScripts.com/owc.
Genre: Open
Theme: Summer Heat if you live in the northern hemisphere. Cold weather if you live in the southern hemisphere.
Challenge: No dialogue
Skill challenge: At least one scene need to be clearly suspenseful regardless of genre.
There will be a Review Page E-mailed to you for you to score the scripts you read. Please only give scores to scripts that you have read. Please do not rate scripts in your review.
Timeline: Scripts are due August 3rd at 11:59PM EST.
Scripts will be posted August 4th.
Votes are due Sunday August 11th.

This isn't a contest - it’s a challenge. There are no official prizes…but stranger things have happened.
You may submit more than one script, but be aware that we have some seriously good writers here. IMO, it’s better to write one GREAT script than two or three mediocre ones. However, if you can pull it off, you’re welcome to.
You may also have a writing partner. Anyone that feels that's not fair should try to co-write at some point. IMO, it actually makes it harder.
You can revise your script as many times as you wish up until August 3rd 11:59 EST. Do not put your real name on your script – this is an anonymous challenge. However, please use your real name when submitting your script. After the challenge closes you can either have your script removed or resubmit your script with your name on it.
Participants are strongly encouraged to read and comment/review the other scripts submitted.
As some of you might already know, my very first OWC here at SS was in February 2006. It wasn't an official one since the January one had already come and gone. It was just put on by the members here. It was a no dialogue OWC and my first script posted here. I remember Mr. Z and Shelton took part as well, but there were others that I don't remember right now. I loved it and was bitten hard by the OWC bug. It also taught me to write visually early on. I've always wanted to do another no dialogue OWC since then. Don knew this, so here we are. Very timely too, I think, with the success of A Quiet Place.
The weather. Many places in Europe especially have seen their hottest driest summer on record. Places like Sweden, where I'm from, have forrest fires raging as we speak and farmers have to slaughter their animals due to lack of feed for them. Deadly wildfires in Greece and California, and so on and so on. I thought it would be appropriate to include weather in this OWC.
The hints:
Shhh... = no dialogue
Cold in Oz = weather in July
It will not be anime = duh...
Bomb under the table = suspense
Danny DeVito + Michael J. Fox = both are known to be short
Math equation = answer is 6, which is maximum pages allowed
Pia, do we have to write according to our hemisphere? I think you should allow either given that it won't take long to guess writers residing in the South i.e., not many of us.
Libby, the OWC in Feb -06 was an unofficial one. Also, back then they were a lot more low key. I'm not surprised they are no longer saved.
I would say, write in your hemisphere. You won't be the only one writing about freezing your arse off. Besides, no one would rate you lower because you wrote it. We love you.

I think CamC? dips in and out of both hemispheres. He could write hot or cold. And I'm holidaying north towards the end of Summer so technically I could have it both ways too.

Hahaha, I'm not joking when I say it's been that hot that I've been wandering around in shorts and sandals (or thongs, for the real aussies) for the last week or so!! It's a bit odd, even got sun burned the other day, but that's happened playing football in Melbourne during winter too so I guess I'm not a good barometer...

I'm not so good with such open requirements and a suspenseful script with no dialogue is so open I'm currently drawing complete blanks but I'll have a think.

As much as this challenge immediately makes me think of A Quiet Place, I don't expect to see a bunch of that for this OWC. We're far too creative and talented.

There should be no formatting for dialogue. That's a given. However, we do a lot of communication these days via emails and texts and such. If you need to use some way to show a message I would use it very sparingly. The more you use, the more people will think you're pushing it or even cheating, so I imagine that will be reflected in the scores. I have no problem with someone receiving a text or an email, just not whole conversations.

I'm probably gonna have to bow out of this. Had an unexpected family crisis the other day and am in the middle of moving. Feel like my whole life just got flipped upside down.

I don’t think I’ll be entering this one. I’ve done this before and realised I’m just not good at non-dialogue competitions.
When asked to explain, jayrex gestured wildly for several minutes. He stormed out of the room when it became clear that no one understood what he meant.

It's not a competition, it's a challenge. Everyone who pulls it off will already have won.
I'm already comfortable with writing without dialogue. The first half of The Trunk has no dialogue. But I wasn't trying to write a complete story without dialogue, so for me, it's still going to be challenging, and I do love a challenge.
This is a great skill to master, and I appreciate the parameters pushing writers in ways that will ultimately benefit them. Writing visually without relying on the crutch of dialogue can't help but strengthen our writing. Everyone should give it a try at least.
I have a rough idea and a title. I've never written a script without dialogue before, so this will be interesting. Six page ought to be easy. Now, if I can only come up with a clever pen name.
@Zack Life's been crazy for me, too; pretty much the same story. My grandmother (who raised me) died a month ago tomorrow (along with the chihuahuas within the next two weeks). I didn't have the best relationship with her, but we both tried. Anyway, I wish you the best.

My wife knows me so well. She threw ideas at me all yesterday and one really clicked with me so I'm going to go with that, see how I get on today.
Reading through the comments I do think sign language with subtitles would be classed as dialogue and I'd certainly score down for that. However, if you had people signing without subtitles, that would work for me and be an interesting challenge. Kind of put the audience in the position of watching people sign and trying to work out what they are saying with their actions.

First draft done. I've two endings though. I'll have to pass it around to my editors (my wife and my sister. No, not one in the same!) and have them pick.
My first draft is done. I'm in shock, that's never happened before.
I think the no dialogue restriction allows for faster writing. It's the dialogue I spend most of my time trying to get right. But it helped to have a good idea early.
I'll let this sit for a couple of days and take another look at it. Maybe I'll even write another.

No budget requirements. You can write as expensive as you want, but as you know, I'm sure, if you want to see your script produced low budget gives you a much better chance.
My first OWC. Very cool. Interesting challenge elements.Writing dialogue is likely my favorite part of screenwriting, so this is a nice stretch. Draft is almost complete. I'd love to see it as a short, so that's at least one person. Good luck to everyone!

The heat or cold should have some effect on the story or characters. It does not have to be about the weather. However, simply writing that the sun beats down on the desert or that heat shimmers off the blacktop is not enough.
Btw, this is an excellent short thriller with no dialogue. It's a perfect edge of your seat kind of film.
The second example Cam posted: too twee for me. I get it that you're trying to inspire people so all good there, but I hope I won't have to read too many advertisement and public service announcement scripts.

Of course it works in screenplay format. That's exactly what we're doing for this OWC.
I get what you're saying, but chances are extremely good that written by even a very good writer, this would not read well at all.
It runs over 9 minutes, but if you really think about it, could you write even 5 pages of this? And, if you could, would you expect anyone to enjoy those 5 pages? I don't think so.
This works based on 2 things - the acting and the production. That's it. There's no story here, nothing makes any sense, and to top it all off, there's no ending. And, let's remember those waves in the first minute - WTF is that supposed to be?
Re Curve: There is a story imh. The waves, I agree, looked disconnected like ocean swell - even though there are plenty of accounts here in Oz, at least, of people dam surfing - really dangerous, and a lot of water goes through dams. But this one's empty, so why the water except for adding atmosphere?
She's knocked out or asleep when we first see her, so you immediately get: how did she get here? And you also see how perilous her situation is. Then there's a noise from below - a howling? That added a creepy supernatural element to it, and that she's not the first. It's a terrifying premise - not having anything to hold on to.
Add a bloody hand, and... There's nothing quite like a bloody fingernail ripped from the nailbed and hanging by a thread.
The ending was a bit of a letdown. If the chain around her neck now wrapped around her hand is to provide traction, I didn't buy it.
Do I care about the end? Not really, Cause the ride was so suspenseful and so much fun. Well, maybe a little bit I care...
It would read well in the hands of a skilled writer.
It's also a good exercise in running a script through our heads, imagining the action taking place, instead of picking apart the writing.
I really wanted to be in this one and thought I'd sneak in enough time to get it done, but it’s not looking possible unless I get something down tonight which is very unlikely.
My biggest issue would be getting all the reviews done as I fly out to Iceland tomorrow.
Hopefully there is another no dialogue challenge down the track.

Just to share an observation, these scripts are likely to break the rule of thumb of one page = one minute of screen time. Dialogue is what makes that rule of thumb work, often by using up pages that might otherwise not be there as characters act or vistas linger on the screen for the same period of time.
A good example is "All Is Lost" (which is a terrific sample of what we're doing here if you want to see how it's done really well). That script was 32 pages for an almost 90 minute movie. Each important action in the script plays out across a minute or more on screen, so one page often translates to four or five minutes of screen time.
Our little 6 page scripts could easily become 10-15 minute shorts when filmed. Think about that when picturing it playing out, give the action time to breathe on the screen in your head.

If you wade into a script with the impression that the formatting and style is what's going to make it special, you're on a one way ticked to pain town...and really, can't you think of more than a very few good stories?? That's slightly troubling if you mean throughout the cinematic world.

Again, you continue to not understand a very, VERY simple concept I'm talking about - good stories. There are very, very few good stories...even less great ones.
I don't know how many movies you watch or how closely you keep tabs on movies at the box office, but I see ALOT! And I keep very close tabs on all movies, whether or not I watch them. And I can confidently tell you again, stories are not the strong point of most successful films...because, they've basically all been told...over and over.
Sure, you can change this and change that, but it's rare to see something new, fresh, and unique. I thought this was common knowledge? No?
Let's take the vid that was embedded on this thread that many have commented on - Curve. There is ZERO story there...ZERO! There's zero characterization. It's not even a cohesive piece, in terms of a beginning, middle and end. In fact, there's no ending.
Yet, it seems to work for everyone who commented on it. You get what I'm saying here, or not?
Hopefully, you dream up some wonderful new story/plot tonight. I can't wait to read it!

This has been a very good exercise for me even though so far I have nothing to submit... Not yet, anyway.
I wrote out two and then realised they were too big a story (stories) packed into 6 pages. I realised both would come across more as 'silent films' rather than not needing dialogue at all, if that makes sense.
Curve worked for me cause it's basically someone hanging off a cliff. That's all it is, but it's also loaded with emotion. We watch, we put ourselves in that place, we wonder how, what, when, why. Those things are never answered. It's literally someone hanging on by their finger nails. It's raw suspense. We come to see she's doomed. And yet we hope she might just make it. It's not fair she's in the situation she's in - in that regard it could happen to any of us. Same opening scene with Saw. They don't know how they got there. Same with Buried, I think - although they made a feature length of that too.
Had a few peeps read my first draft and got enough feedback to start on a second. A second draft is a rare thing for me in a OWC.
As for what makes a good script/story; well as all things in life it is about balance. A good story is one that people enjoy, understand and remember fondly. A good script is one that can be read easily, understand and visualise clearly. Combine the two, and you have it made. A lot of writers are good at one, or the other; rarely both.
A script without dialogue isn’t easy, anyone who attempts this OWC and enters deserves a pat on the back and secret masonic handshake in my opinion. I do imagine some will down score scripts for including unfilmables and a none dialogue script may include more unfilmables than the norm. But again just consider balance. If it’s mainly prose, then yeah it’s not a screenplay but a bit of artistic flair is good. Most produced (famous) scripts have unfilmables in them. Most notably with character descriptions.
It seems to be accepted inside the industry to have a character description which says less about what they look like and what they are wearing (which changes during production anyway) and more about what type of person they are. Similar some action is described not simply as exactly what we see on screen, but with a few words which describe the tone, mood and atmosphere of the setting far more eloquently than “The man enters the small house.” Balance Padawans, baalAAAANCE! Never written a short before. But when I read the rules / subject matter one just popped into my head. It's a lunch-break job but have to say - really enjoyed writing it. So I've thrown it into the mix.

I finally had a germ of an idea, but doesn't look like I'll have time to write it.
I don't enter a lot of these because with the one week deadline, I only really get a few hours to do the actual writing.
Food for thought, for the future, for those of us who work a lot of hours during the week - maybe announce the theme on a Monday, this way we have all week to think about it and then the weekend to write it?
Announcing on a Friday means I have to have an instant idea, and then have the bones in place by Sunday night.

I didn't think I'd be able to enter this OWC, but an idea hit me the other night and I ran with it. It may be a bit ambitious for a 6 page script, but to Hell with it. I had a ton of fun writing it.

It can take place anywhere, but if you live in the northern hemisphere, you have to write a story where the summer heat has to play a part. It doesn't have to be about the heat, just has to be hot.

OK, submitted! Amazing I got this done, but I did have to skip the gym and I don't have the AssBlaster 400 at home, so the only work my arse got was sitting in my chair, writing this script.
This has to be the shortest script I've ever written and obviously the only one without dialogue. Should be interesting to see how these all turned out.
I have numerous free hours tomorrow to read, so hoping The Don can do his usual yeoman job of a quick posting of some of the entries.

What happened to Europe? Nothing...they're still rocking out and have put out 6 awesome CD's since 2004. 1991's Prisoners in Paradise was their last before they rebanded in 2004.
Shockingly, they've really matured in terms of their sound and look.
