I just made my first script sale.

I'm not getting a great deal of money (though enough to put a smile on my face) but I've also been promised 5% producer's credit (I'll find out more about what exactly that means when the papers are signed -- I've never heard of a percentage of credit...I'm wondering if it means a percentage of profits...anyone?)

Best part about it:  next time I query a studio or producer I get to include, "My previous script, The Silk, was purchased by (such and such) and begins filming in (such and such)."

Is that an open door I see?  I do believe I'll take it!

And huge thanks to Don for this; the production company which purchased the script read it here first...then THEY contacted ME.  You are my new hero, man --and I don't even know ya!

Hey Lon, Congrats!

I'm thinking that a 5% producer's credit is equivalent to 5% of profits on the back end, which should work out nicely, especially if the prodco can get a distribution deal lined up.

Congrats again, and thanks for helping to contribute to the success of us screenwriters in the midwest.

Awesome...  Tell the story!  How'd you pull it off, query letter.... pitch?

Mason: "Are you sure you're ready for this?"
Stan Goodspeed: "I'll do my best."
Mason: "You're best. Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and f*** the prom queen!"
Stan Goodspeed: "Carla was the prom queen."
Mason: "Really?"
Stan Goodspeed: "Yeah!"

I answered an email.  Seriously, that's about it.  I got an email from the production company's Head of Acquisitions who said she'd read the script here, loved it and wanted to option it.  So we swapped emails the last few weeks, "getting to know you" kind of stuff, like what are my goals as a screenwriter, that kind of stuff.  Then last night I got a phone call and they said they want to buy it, and keep me on for rewrites plus the deal in my first post above.  Really, that's it.

My thanks to all of you for the kind words!  Now I know I'm not some rich and successful screenwriter but it's a good start -- and if I can do it from Nowhere, Indiana, anybody can.  Words of encouragement to those of you who think you can't do crap unless you live in L.A.

It is good news, congrats! Make sure to read over the contract, and that it's longer than one page.

That's super, Lon.  I love hearing stories like this.

It must have been that excellent title that caught their eye

Holy fuckin' shit!

So, the script I sold and which this thread is about is to begin filming this fall.  I recently turned in my rewrite but was nervous, because it was very different from the original script which caught the producer's eye.  So I've been waiting on pins and needles the last couple days, nervous, waiting to see what they thought of the rewrite.

Well, as it turns out...they loved it.  Can't wait to start filming it this fall.  But that's not the good news...

The good news is, apparently they didn't just love it.  They LOVED it.  And now they're offering me some dough to come up with a ten page treatment for a TV movie which, if they like it, I'll write the script for and if the TV movie is successful, it could go on to become a series!

So again, I say...HOLY FUCKIN' SHIT!!!

I don't know why... but I find this line to be funny. Maybe it's just me, though. "shrugs"

However, in light of scoffed notions, this is actually really good news. This whole thing here.
