..Me, in case you're wondering.

So you know, I've always had a strong interest in writing, and I've submitted small pieces for magazines in the past, but I outgrew my interest in that long ago. Since then, I've been more interested in real writing.

I've been working on a novel (two, actually, but one seems to be taking a vast ammount of precedence at the moment) - but all the time, I've had my eye on script writing. I've picked up the art of formatting, or at the minimum, I think I have - and being a rather creative person, I've always had countless ideas running through my head, many of which I've struggled to progress into novelisation (I'm only 50% sure that's a real word, I'll look that up.) - and my newfound intrigue in script writing has brought me to the point where I've decided I wish to put these notions into scripts instead.

Whilst I still have every intention of releasing a novel some time in the future, I think my current future lies in script writing. Wait, scratch that, I know my current future lies in script writing. It didn't come to me in a dream, I wasn't shown the light by divine intervention, I just realised that it's what I wanted to do above all else. So whilst I will still spend time working on my book, It's now fighting against a script i've started for time.

I've actually been stalking this site for a fair while now. I was searching for movie scripts on google (This being about 3 weeks ago, when I had started penning a script but was still improving on my formatting) when I stumbled across this site in the results. And perhaps it was fate, but the actual page in the results was the list of unproduced/fanfilm scripts on the main site.

So after three weeks or so, I've now joined up, and i've set myself the deadline of November 24th to complete my script to the point where it is all in check, and any plot holes or mistakes have been corrected and improved upon. So for anyone who might have a passing interest in seeing my first work, it will be submitted around that date. (And i'll go on to make it better still, most likely, by rewriting and redrafting it as much as is neccessary.

Oh, and I've realised that I'm rambling on. So before I forget, here are the basics you might want to know - My name is Alex, and I'm English (I'm not sure how much of this place is English, American, etc, so if it is strongly American you may take issue with the fact I spell colour with a 'u' etc), and my preferred genre is horror.

So I'll stop talking now before I go off on another long-winded biography of myself. Basically what I meant to say by all this was - Hi.

Well, first of all, welcome to the board.

And second of all, I don't even know what the plot is, but I can assure you I'm already interested in reading your script.  You seem very intelligent and you like to write horror(a genre that is in dire need of intelligent writers).  I think the combination will make for an interesting script, as long as you have a fresh idea.

If I were you, I'd start reading all the scripts to classic horror films before you start writing, just to get a feel on how they create the atmosphere and all that other jazz.

...oh, and I suggest you start reviewing other member's scripts so that they'll feel obliged to return the favor when your script is uploaded.

Please, read Elvis The Goat or Cold Turkey.  Thanks in advance and I'll make sure to review your script in exchange.

Thanks Hoody, much appreciated. I'm already a step ahead on the classic horror scripts part - I was searching for Horror scripts when I found this place.

And I'm already starting to review other people's scripts, something which I intend to continue doing during whatever spare time I have. I'm determined to make a real go of this, and see what it leads me to.

Once again, Thanks for the welcome.

Welcome to the boards -- and suffice it to say that plenty of your English bretheren haunt these boards.  Not me, but lots of them.

Use the forums correctly and you can learn quite a bit around here.

For example, don't be like Hoody here and tick off all the horror guys.

Thanks, Bert - it's a relief to know I'm not the minority on the boards.

And I sincerely hope that I do learn a lot over the course of my time here, that's exactly why I signed up.

Hey Alex welcome to the boards.  I'm English too, there are a few of us here, but you need to be aware that sometimes you may get pulled up for grammer and the like because words are different in America.  That's in no way a dig at the American's here lol, somethings are just different I guess.  I have had a few comments regarding my language in the past, mind you I am from the North where the English language is in its infancy.

Welcome!

Good advice so far from other members. Read and you'll get read.

As for the grammar thing, the only thing I've really seen Americans take issue with in English spelling is the -ise words (Realise, weaponise, institutionalise etc.), but don't worry about it, I think I saw one of the Aussies use the word 'sook' in a script the other day.

We're ridiculously multicultural. I think I've even gotten away with mixing British and American English.

And thankyou Death Monkey and alffy as well, I'm glad to be here.

I'll try to work around any grammatical barriers between us and The 'States. It shouldn't be too hard. (But so I know, is a pub called a pub over there? Strange thing to ask, granted, but can anyone answer that for me? Thanks.)

As for all the advice, I appreciate it all a lot.

So thanks, or (now I know I can be a bit more English-y), cheers.

Welcome to the boards.

If your goal is to learn as much as you can, don't dismiss negative comments about your scripts. Often you can learn more from those than praise.

(hope that made sense)

It certainly did, pia. And I'll always be open to criticism, providing it's constructive criticism. Thanks for the welcome.

Hey Alex,

Your Nov 24th deadline applies to which: feature or short? I'm hoping short cause that's a tall order for a vet to start from stratch to meet.

Anyway, to answer your question, pub works over here. I would usually call it a bar but sometimes here people use bars to mean clubs (discoteques). As long as it has a friendly atmosphere and not to much dancing, pub would work.

Oh and flashtorch just sounds funny to me so please use flashlight

Tim

Thanks Souter Fell/Tim. The deadline applies to a feature, although in hindsight, I'm starting to feel that is a little over ambitious. So I might disregard that date, and set myself something a little more reasonable. I felt that I could match the November 24th deadline, because I'm pouring a lot of time, resources and effort into this script.
But now reading what you've said, I agree. I'll rethink my targets, thanks for the solid advice, and thanks for answering the pub query too. (Oh, I'll make sure to use flashlight as well then, heh.)

And thanks Chism/Matt and Greg as well, much appreciated guys.
