I typically like to put a fake beard on and sit with a pipe at a giant wooden desk that's littered with scrolls, pondering how deep and intellectual I must look, and then, only after hours of musing and drinking a nice ale from a wooden mug, I take my quill pen, dip it into ink, and begin to write on some fresh yellow parchment paper.
It's important to point out that this desk is built in a perfectly replicated hobbit hole in hill right outside my house.
When I'm finished, I put the parchment together in a freshly made leather binding and take it to the city of the elves to be published.
At my desk in my living room, on my PC, with the TV off because I need quiet, and with a pack of smokes and a Diet Coke within reaching distance. After a couple hours I've usually gone through about half a pack; I light one, it burns out while I'm writing, then I light another. My ash tray is typically packed with 1/4 to 1/2 smoked cigarettes (I don't like relighting them after they burn out; I'm finnicky like that).
OK, in reality, when I can't find a big field to make crop circles in, I always, 100% of the time, write at my PC, in my office. Usually it's silent, but some times, I'll have music on.
This is after I've done my research on the computer and pre-writing i my head. The pre-writing takes place anywhere and everywhere, but the 2 best places to come up with things are at the gym, while using a treadmill or elliptical machine, or sitting on my patio, having a smoke and a drink, looking at the sky.
I have built a life size replica of the Wicker Man in my back garden. I hire struggling actors to do a pagan dance at the bottom of it. I sit in the top, dressed as a chicken, and occasionally get 'some inspiration'.
When I finally write something of merit, I'm going to set my charges and blow the sh*t out of it. I'll quit writing shortly after.
I tend to write at a local coffee shop, library or cafe. I do on occasion write at home, but there's a certain furry animal, a cat named Martha to be exact who has decided that I am her pet, and it's difficult to write when she's rubbing her face against my notebook.
So I usually gather up my notebook and an available laptop and head out to Panera Bread and sit and write. Recently just moved back up to Northern California and have noticed that it wasn't just the southern California Panera's that were freezing cold inside, but the majority of the Panera's I go to seem to have set the thermostat extremely cold. At first I thought it was b/c the employees work around hot ovens and are moving around and they probably sweat, so to keep them cool they lower the temperature.
Now I'm not so sure. I'm leaning more towards the possibility that it's a strategic marketing tactic. Panera keeps it cold so if you stay you have to buy a latte or other warm beverage which costs more than a regular soda. There's a slight problem with this theory - one could get a cup of coffee which is inexpensive, less than a latte and more than likely soda and the coffee keeps you warm. I don't drink coffee though.
In any case they are usually nice and I've spent 5-6 hours on just a soda and cookie and they've not said a word to me about staying. I usually have a some music playing while I write and I tend to people watch a lot - Music is usually how I get ideas. I take the tone I want for my script and I find music I feel with give me the best ideas and will set a playlist accordingly.
For example: For darker films, I tend to use alternative rock. Comedies, I'll use a blend of classic rock, southern rock and pop. Nothing is set in stone and can change if I'm not liking the ideas I'm getting. But my system usually works for me and I make progress - that's all that counts.
I used to work as a customer service rep. So while people are fussing and cussing in my ear, that's when I use to get the bulk of my writing done. Now they messed up and made me a supervisor, so I can't write at work anymore I try to write in my living room or bedroom for the most part now. Not getting nearly as much done, but it's what I have now....
The two words that bring us all together; "FADE IN"...
