Okay - so far, I've seen threads re: music that you play while writing, and how the actual act of writing affects various people on the boards.

Quite possible I've just missed it, but curious as to WHERE everybody writes.

For myself, I've got an antique desk all set up for the purpose.  But usually end up writing in bed.  It's just so darned comfortable. And I can shut the door, and block out any noises in the apartment.

How 'bout the rest of youse?

Cheers,

WV

I write in one of the spare bedrooms. Bought a huge secondhand desk for €80. I have a White board mounted over head for arranging scenes and scribbling notes etc. I prefer to outline and write out scene description in long hand and then type them.

I have an office set up in the basement and I write there, on an old-fashioned desktop computer. I will not buy a laptop because I know that I'll never feel comfortable writing anywhere except in my dingy, comfortable surroundings, where I can blast my music...

In my home office. I have made it a point to make it very writer conducive as it were.

Movie posters on the wall, my very few writing achievements hanging by my desk but most importantly, a naked picture of my wife attached to the bottom of my monitor.

It helps to keep me at my desk even when I don't feel like writing.

Actually, I write in a spare bedroom.  Lately, though, I've been going up to the desk I have in the attic.

But I feel comfortable writing anywhere.  At the bus station.  Barnes & Noble.  (I'm usually clothed at those places, though.)  Wherever a thought strikes me.

I write in my head.  Then when I can't fit any more I dump it into my computer, in my comfy chair, on my portable desk.

I write everywhere, except I don't write on bathroom walls.   I write in my office. I write in the bedroom. I write in hotels. I write at the cabin. I write at the kitchen table. I write sitting on the floor.I write in restaurants. I write in weird environments like in my dreams at night.

I write using a laptop or a pen or crayola crayons. Sometimes I try and write in Hebrew or some other language. I love words and I love to play with them. They're not just words and that's what make them so special, but we need to be careful with them-- even in virtual reality:

A Celtic saying I came across during the last OWC:

Though there's no bone in a man's tongue, it has frequently broken a man's head.

I sit in the captain's chair of my living room couch and write there, for the most part.  Half the time, the television is on.  Half the time, I'm listening to Pandora.

On occasion, I take my lap top to the library.  Other times, I'll bring it to a quiet bar and have a few beers while writing.  I actually do really well when I have a very light buzz; things don't annoy me as easily and I'm less distracted.

I write everywhere.

My most inspirational moments occur when I'm working on mindless and mundane tasks.
So, I scribble notes of ideas, premises, characters, scenes and dialog bits anywhere I am before I forget them.
Sounds a lot like what Sandra does. But not with crayons. Usually just pen.

The backs of my checkbooks I keep in the minivan are all covered with notes and outlines.
At work I keep a quartered and stapled sheet of printer paper "book" in my pocket for scribbling notes and outlines.
Sometimes I write a brief, keyword text message and save it as a draft when travelling.

Before knocking out an outline on paper in a notebook as Janet does, I ruminate over it for hours, days or months, which sounds similar to what MC does.

Sitting down at the home or computer near my balcony porch to begin pounding out a story is just a formality.

Sometimes I have to C&P a work in progress to email myself as a draft then continue it at work or elsewhere. Those go to a separate email account I keep just for story ideas, notes, WIPs and lotsa homework that I can access and update from anywhere civilized.

And I'm almost always wearing clothes.

I write on a laptop so technically everywhere. I prefer to write at the kitchen or dining room table in my house. That's where I feel the most comfortable and least distracted. I write in my room quite a bit (on my bed or couch) but that's where I feel the exact opposite. I recently got a desk in my room which changed things significantly but at the moment, I've opted to use it to play computer games on my sister's old PC. Not exactly progress although the few times I did write on it were quite nice.

I've no issues with writing on other computers or in other environments e.g. in a car, bus or train. I've gotten some good writing done on long trips. I've also written on napkins, stickies and in notebooks.

There's no rhyme or reason to my inspiration. Just a matter of comfort. The writing process is very haphazard and unromantic for me, as it seems to be with many professional writers so I don't bother concerning myself with its lack of elegance.

Any way I can get work done. But I've got my preferred spots.

Typically on the couch.... I've got a spot that has a perfect indent of my a$$ and it is oh so comfy.

I write most of my stuff longhand in a writing pad - in the car, outside, etc. then I transpose it to computer when I'm not feeling creative in my head. This eliminates a lot of revision as by the time I do copy it, I know what to change.

If I sit at the computer and try to write from the word go, i get too distracted by the Net - a few times I gave my wife the modem to take to her work so I had to write!!!!!

I try to find a big field and make crop circles, which I then like to fly over a few days later to see if what I wrote makes sense.  From there, it's straight to the computer, in which I fill in the info using a copy of Showgirls as my template.

So far, it's really been effective for me.

Good technique, Dreamscale.

I typically like to put a fake beard on and sit with a pipe at a giant wooden desk that's littered with scrolls, pondering how deep and intellectual I must look, and then, only after hours of musing and drinking a nice ale from a wooden mug, I take my quill pen, dip it into ink, and begin to write on some fresh yellow parchment paper.

It's important to point out that this desk is built in a perfectly replicated hobbit hole in hill right outside my house.

When I'm finished, I put the parchment together in a freshly made leather binding and take it to the city of the elves to be published.

it's very difficult for me to write at home.  More work is done at Borders, library, or the park.  I guess it's motivation problem.

At my desk in my living room, on my PC, with the TV off because I need quiet, and with a pack of smokes and a Diet Coke within reaching distance.  After a couple hours I've usually gone through about half a pack; I light one, it burns out while I'm writing, then I light another.  My ash tray is typically packed with 1/4 to 1/2 smoked cigarettes (I don't like relighting them after they burn out; I'm finnicky like that).

OK, in reality, when I can't find a big field to make crop circles in, I always, 100% of the time, write at my PC, in my office.  Usually it's silent, but some times, I'll have music on.

This is after I've done my research on the computer and pre-writing i my head.  The pre-writing takes place anywhere and everywhere, but the 2 best places to come up with things are at the gym, while using a treadmill or elliptical machine, or sitting on my patio, having a smoke and a drink, looking at the sky.

I have built a life size replica of the Wicker Man in my back garden. I hire struggling actors to do a pagan dance at the bottom of it. I sit in the top, dressed as a chicken, and occasionally get 'some inspiration'.

When I finally write something of merit, I'm going to set my charges and blow the sh*t out of it. I'll quit writing shortly after.

I tend to write at a local coffee shop, library or cafe.  I do on occasion write at home, but there's a certain furry animal, a cat named Martha to be exact who has decided that I am her pet, and it's difficult to write when she's rubbing her face against my notebook.

So I usually gather up my notebook and an available laptop and head out to Panera Bread and sit and write.  Recently just moved back up to Northern California and have noticed that it wasn't just the southern California Panera's that were freezing cold inside, but the majority of the Panera's I go to seem to have set the thermostat extremely cold.  At first I thought it was b/c the employees work around hot ovens and are moving around and they probably sweat, so to keep them cool they lower the temperature.

Now I'm not so sure. I'm leaning more towards the possibility that it's a strategic marketing tactic. Panera keeps it cold so if you stay you have to buy a latte or other warm beverage which costs more than a regular soda.  There's a slight problem with this theory - one could get a cup of coffee which is inexpensive, less than a latte and more than likely soda and the coffee keeps you warm.  I don't drink coffee though.

In any case they are usually nice and I've spent 5-6 hours on just a soda and cookie and they've not said a word to me about staying. I usually have a some music playing while I write and I tend to people watch a lot - Music is usually how I get ideas.  I take the tone I want for my script and I find music I feel with give me the best ideas and will set a playlist accordingly.

For example: For darker films, I tend to use alternative rock. Comedies, I'll use a blend of classic rock, southern rock and pop.  Nothing is set in stone and can change if I'm not liking the ideas I'm getting. But my system usually works for me and I make progress - that's all that counts.

I used to work as a customer service rep. So while people are fussing and cussing in my ear, that's when I use to get the bulk of my writing done. Now they messed up and made me a supervisor, so I can't write at work anymore   I try to write in my living room or bedroom for the most part now. Not getting nearly as much done, but it's what I have now....
