Hey all you out there,

I'm making a music video for a friend's metal band to post on the web and I was planning on ending it with the lead singer (my friend) singing so hard he starts to spit out blood.  I was originally going to use maple syrup with  dark red food coloring, it looks great and it really looks like spit mixed with blood but it leaves a yellowish goo and it obviously looks fake, not only that but it stains anything it lands on and I can't have his guitar being stained with yellow goo. Does anyone out there have any suggestions? I'm all ears.

Xavier

Just a note: The blood has to be safe to put in your mouth and shouldn't leave a stain after long takes.

I've heard that corn syrup and red food coloring are commonly used.

Same consistency, but the corn syrup is clearer than maple stuff.

There are a handful of recipes for making movie blood.  I used to make it by the gallon when I was a kid (mid-70s).  Here's one popular way to make blood:

Combine 1 part water with 3 parts corn syrup (Caro syrup is a good one).
Add red food coloring and mix gently by shaking or stirring. Continue adding drops until the shade resembles that of real blood. Add a small amount of blue food coloring to achieve a more realistic shade.  This mixture is safe to put in an actor's mouth.  As for staining...well, that's probably gonna happen, but a bit of soap and water can remedy that.

Again, that's just one recipe.  There are others, which I'm sure you can find if you do a Google search.  Good luck!

Yeah, that's the mixture I hear.  And it's the best.

It does stain though. So I'd just wear shirts you can afford to throw away.

That's the same recipe this guy uses (although he's an idiot at mixing the red and blue). After turning upside down for about 600 time, I'd imagine he would pull out a spoon.

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll try it out, I just hope it doesn't stain my friends guitar, it cost a lot of money and I don't want to have to pay it, I can barley afford my own.

Again, Thanks, I'll give it a try.
