The original stuck as true to the source material as it could... The budget and production wouldn't allow for it to fully be realized, however.  So they made it "JUST ANOTHER MONSTER" movie, instead of what it really was.

They wanted the FRANKENSTEIN appeal once they realised they couldn't pull off what they wanted to pull off, it just couldn't be done back in that time.

Don't bash the original, without the proper facts... The original is still fantastic, just not as visual and story driven as it's remake counterpart is.

Also, most of Carpenters work is fantastic... however, there are times when he really didn't do the right casting or maybe enough directing.

Assult on Precinct 13 comes to mind, LOL~  brilliant movie, even more so for the time, but the acting is terrible by and large and the women, WOW! What the fuck was thaT? I've seen Jimmy Lego's do better acting on hack nite at the deep end comedy club in south denton. LOL~

That girl couldn't act worth goat nuts to cheese.

BALTIS~

I enjoyed Ghosts of Mars, I believe it's John Carpenter. i had to order the film from an American off of E Bay because Canada is such a dvd deprived country. It took me 2 years to finally get all 3 Crow films, I mean get with the system here.

Anyways I have never seen The Thing, The Blob yes but never the thing. Weird.

I enjoyed Carpernter's early films like "ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13", the acting was awful and the dialouge  sucks like Balt has pointed out, but it is still a hell of a lot better then the crap we have nowadays.
"The FOG" I think was great, "PRINCE OF DARKNESS", classic to me, "HALLOWEEN 1-3" I think are brilliant. Part if this has to be the crew he worked with, Dean
Cundey worked miracle on photagraphy and is now the best in the business.

I'm not too keen on Carpenter's higher budgeted flicks, they don't have the same edge to them.

"MOUTH OF MADNESS" wasn't too bad, I enjoyed that one, but I can't even watch "GHOSTS OF MARS", that just has no Carpenter feel about it at all IMO.

Accept for the fact that he directed it and is proud of it, other than that... It has no Carpenter feel.

I think in my opinion that people don't like it because there's another rapper in it, not you but some people, when you read there thoughts on certain films you almost get the idea that they may be a bit racist.

I got that from a review on a script of mine that was set heavily around a black character.

You may know your John Carpenter films but just be happy they haven't made 30 sequels to it and leave it at that.

I seen this website somebody on here posted called fanfic.com and oh my godit's a god forsaken epidemic there are hundreds of fanfics for just a single series like Star Trek and those don't even include the ones here

It has no Carpenter feel to it, nor does most of Carpenter's higher budgeted work.

The fact a rapper is in it makes no difference whatsoever in my opinion, in fact I like Ice Cube and I have one heck of a rap collection.

So I hope you dont mean im rascist for picking a flaw in a film,  I've just been to a Snoop Doggy Dogg concert so even being labled within that context makes me a little unhappy with how I perhaps put my point across.

I don't like "GHOSTS OF MARS" because the feel of Carpenter's early films is not there at all. The production levels are too high, it is just not what Carpenter is good at in my opinion. The music is not at all right, how can you be terrified by rock music or whatever it is playing during a murder scene? It appeals to the younger viewer maybe, and perhaps I am completly wrong on this.
But I didn't like it.

But I appreciate people do like it, and it is just my view I posted. I know Carpenter like's it, I heard he is planning a sequal. I love John Carpenter films, he is my complete inspiration, but if it sucks in my opinion, I will say it does.

As for other actors, or rappers, you can't hate the people that act, you have to hate the script they are given.
I think Busta Rhymes did a great job in HALLOWEEN 8 but his character was poor.
I think LL COOL J did a really good job in HALLOWEEN 7, probably one of the most likebale in the film.
Maybe loads more, but I don;t keep score of blacks or whites in films. When I write, I don't even mention skin color unless i'm going to use a stereotypical character, for whatever uses then they will be used.

Maybe I'm making more of this then what it was, but this is just my view.

Assault On Precinct 13 (bad acting or not), Halloween, The Thing, In the Mouth of Madness and Prince of Darkness are all brilliant films. I agree that Carpenter has made as many missteps (Village of the Damned, Escape from LA, Ghosts of Mars, Christine) as solid steps in the right direction, but overall he's good director who sometimes has to lower his standards (talent-wise) to get his movies made. I even enjoyed THEY LIVE for its poor acting and over the top dialogue (what else could you expect from a film starring Roddy Piper). I agree that some of his major budget stuff (like Starman...tooo corny) is weak...it seems his films SUFFER from a better grade of talent, heh heh.

Ghost of Mars was, by the way, what came out of failed deal to adapt a British roleplaying game called The Mutant Chronicles. After the script was written, Carpenter lost the rights to the game. He altered a few things (very few things...I'm surprised he didn't get sued) and made the film anyway, on an indie budget.  Who knows what it could've been had he not lost the rights? It was originally supposed to star Jet Li (in the Ice Cube role) and have a budget of $45+ million. Instead we got...that piece of crap.

Anyway...just thought I'd chime in.

Jet Li, thank god they lost the rights than. Because Jet Li in all of his roles that I've seen is about as interesting as a rotten apple.

Hmmm..I did not know that about Ghosts Of Mars.

I still rank In The Mouth Of Madness in my top 10 movies of all times. Fantastic film.
