Brilliant film! However it lacked in several area's... Not a Jim Carey fan, however, he did this role so well and so great that he was impossible not to admire. Kate Winslet was, as always, stunning and the story they had to work with and the mood they set and the sheer fantastics of it all made you walk in wonderment several hours after it was over with.
Eternal Sunshine Of A Spotless Mind is an event, not a movie. One of my all time favorite flicks. Ranks up there with ----> Magnolia - Vanilla Sky - American Beauty - Of Mice and Men and The Big Empty...... < all fantastic flicks >
However, I could have done without "Frodo's" punk ass in Eternal Sunshine, he didn't fit in the movie.. he was a huge break away and take away for me. His character wasn't evolved or man enough for the role he tried to play, I don't believe. I mean, he's too... just... little and stuff and very un threating and to be the Jelly boyfriend, LOL, NAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!
But oh well, he's paid to play and that's what he did... some of us don't play so well though and in this case, neither did he.
I saw this movie last week by chance as my sister had borrowed it from a friend, so I said I'd watch it with her. I had no expectations of it, actually, to be honest, I'd never really heard too much about it, just remembered the title was long and Jim C was actually being serious for a change.
Now, I was blown away by it!! It was excellent! --I had the same reaction to this film as I did with Vanilla Sky (which btw if you liked ESOTSM, I think you'll love too, go rent it)
It was very intriguing, often a little confusing in the sense that you're thinking "WTF? okkkkkaaaaaaaay, what's that all about now? ohhhhhhhh...!" Poor description I know, but you'll know what I mean after you've seen it.
Kate was excellent, convincing US accent and highly entertaining with her quirky and choppy personality. Very serious issues played out in a dark romantic kind of way.
I am doing the movie no justice at all here in this review, so go and please see it for yourself!! I didn't catch the hype at the time, but I believe its worth all of it and then some....
Refreshing to see a movie like this emerge from a year of sequels, prequels and remakes, to say the least.
i did not expect it to be as funny as it was... i actually didn't want to watch it at first, but it was something to do. i was laughing throughout the entire film, everyone was funny (well, like someone else said, frodo was kinda boring, but he brought some more conflict to the story). kate winslet was awesome and she's got a good chance at getting nominated for an academy award, but i don't think jim carrey is getting enough recognition for his performance. i thought he was incredible. once again, it was just an awesome and very funny movie...
my favorite line in the entire film "WHAT THE F*CK!?! I'm trying to build a birdhouse!!"
this space for rent. $9.94 a day <--- doesn't get any better than that!
Wow. This film exceeded my expectations. We started with a girl meets boy find of story and flow into this shocker of our hero getting hooked up to electrodes and a computer system. He is working to erase the memory of his girlfriend (who met in the first minutes of the film) because she erased the memory of him first. As if that wasn't weird enough, the story of their first meeting doesn't match what we just watched.
Since most of the story happens in the mind of the boy, it is often strange to watch as people disappear or change or on other occasions, he walks from one location into another completely different one without even batting an eye. Normal here is turned upside down, but it makes the most wonderful sense.
The theme of this film is that no matter how much you try to forget, history will always repeat itself. Jim Carrey plays Joel Banis, and he continues to prove that he can act beyond the zaniness he is known for. This is a serious role, and he carries the film admirably with Kate Winslet as his whimsical, spontaneous girlfriend.
If you like romantic comedies, this is for you. If you like cerebral psychological dramas, this is for you. If you want to see a film that is not just a waste of 2 hours, then this is for you.
