Kate (Franka Potente of Run Lola Run fame) is waiting for the last subway train on the London Underground, when she falls asleep on the platform. When she wakes up, she discovers that she has been locked in, and she's not alone. Something is lurking in the shadows and she soon finds herself on the run through dark tunnels and such as it comes after her and anyone else she meets along the way (tramps, security guard etc). This was ok. It was pretty gory and violent (some things were actually a bit disturbing) and there's a lot of action and chasing to keep you entertained. But that's really all the film has to offer. There are too many plot holes (like for example, there is no way they would've locked up without checking it was empty) to ground the story in reality. The lead character Kate was totally unsympathetic. She's pretty cocky and self involved which begs the question "WHY?" since she isn't believable as the "gorgeous" hunk magnet she's supposed to be playing. We really don't care what happens to her. The direction is hideous. All this film needed was some tweaking to mend the plot holes and decent direction to rack up the suspense and it would've been much better. The setting and situations COULD have been used to create suspense but the film looked messy and sloppily put together. Seems like such a waste. The third act is a little...blah, and the ending is too ambiguous (as is the background of the antagonist). It's annoying because it REALLY didn't have to be this way. It has it's moments like when the "Creep" is first properly revealed (the audience literally gasped and screamed during this one moment of inspired directing) and what seems to be known as "the surgery scene". The antagonist also likes to mimic it's victims on occasion, and one of these moments was quite chilling. Still, I can't say the film on the whole was SCARY but I really think it could've been with some more attention and a better choice of director and lead actress, but you may well get more enjoyment out of it than some of the other "horror" films that have been released recently. 3/5 Ian |
