Yesterday, I bought the dvd The Tenant by Roman Polanski. I was interested in watching this film by the influence of a television show I watched in a friends house that counted down the top 100 scariest movies of all time. Also, I've seen another film he made called Creepshow, which he collaborated with Stephen King. I really enjoyed Creepshow and have it has dvd.

The film is about a nice, quiet type guy (Trelkovsky) who moves into a apartment that has some bad history. After a short time period living in the apartment, odd things start happening to this fellow. I can't go into specifics since it will ruin the story but,  will tell you one scene that was broadcasted on the t.v. show. The scene occurs when Trelkovsky is moving his furniture around. He spots a hole in the wall covered up with cotton. He takes out the cotton, pokes his index finger inside, and takes out a tooth. That I believe is sufficent enough to get a sense of the film.

This film is really confusing to understand, but I belive that's what brings the creepiness to live. Many aspects are at play here most defintiely paranoia and secrecy. Other than that,  I really don't understand the film much myself only a general concept.of what it might revolve around. This is by far an interesting film, one that would haunt me forever in trying to understand what the hell is going on. If anybody else has seen the film, feel free to offer your views or review or comments.

Roman Polanski – just before Tess and just after Chinatown.

This film is a romp through the mind of a paranoid schizophrenic.  A mild-mannered man is forced by his circumstances and guilt to become something he doesn’t want to be.

On some levels I really liked this film and on other levels I found it lacking in tension.   This film is full of surprises, including the fact that Polanski himself plays the lead character and does a damn good job of it too.   But even though the surprises help somewhat, it’s damn predictable where this film is going and that ruins the tension, at least it did for me.     I think Polanski could have held back a bit more in telling us the true nature of this story.

That isn’t to say there isn’t some good Hitchcock-like suspense in store.   But I am surprised that people found this film scary.  I found it hard to stop laughing actually.

However, the writing in this film is fantastic, as are the characters, as is the film-making.  And except for a couple of scenes, I can’t fault it at all.

It wouldn’t hurt to watch this film -- if you are interested in film as an art form.

I've never seen the Tenant, but Roman Polanski had nothing to do with Creepshow.
