Hey, has anyone checked out the alternate ending of I Am Legend? Usually when you buy a DVD and it has an alternate ending, it's really not that different from the original ending but this alternate ending is actually dramatically different.
!!SPOILERS!! Instead of the butterfly appearing as cracked glass it's the main bad guy who touches the plexiglass with his hands. His bloody handprint leaves a shape on the glass that resembles a butterfly. Neville then looks at the infected female he has held captive and is experimenting on. He finds a butterfly tattoo on her leg. He realizes that the bad guy doesn't want him, he wants the woman. Neville then reels the gurney outside the plexiglass chamber and revives her. While the other infected wants to attack Neville the alpha male holds them back while he picks up the female. They have a little moment of recognition and bonding. The alpha male then spots all the polaroids on the wall and it is sort of implied that they view Neville as the bad guy since he is killing them. The infected then take off leaving Neville, Anna and Ethan unharmed. The three of them later drive out of the city heading for the survivors colony with a sense of hope. !!SPOILERS END!!
Even though it doesn't really fits hand in glove with the rest of the movie this alternate ending is actually pretty good. It's difficult to say which version is the better - I guess it depend on what kind of mood you're in.
Down in the hole / Jesus tries to crack a smile / Beneath another shovel load
Both endings are interesting but neither worked for me all that much. The alternate ending was different and not what you'd expect, true, and I did like the moment where the main CGI slack jawed Darkseeker does seem to blame Neville - that felt like a half hearted attempt to actually work in the theme of the novel and the actual point of the title I Am Legend, but then it ends on the semi uplifting note....
So both endings have their merits and faults and I won't go on another tirade on how Akiva Goldsman and Protosevitch and Warners just ruined the novel...
But the alternate ending does make for an interesting contrast.
