The best of the Friday films.

The movie picks up where the original left off. Mama Voorhees has is about to kill the last surviving Camp Counselor, whom she blames for her son Jason's death. Mama loses her head and little Jason (who did NOT drown) watches it happen. Fast forward almost 30 years and Jason is now a man. He lives off the land, hunting prey and doing what he must to survive. Needless to say a group of careless college kids arrive and disrupt Jason's peaceful life. He goes ape shit and a lot of people die.

The Good. I'm not gonna lie, I liked almost everything about this film. Technically it is the most well made Friday film, hell maybe even the most well made slasher film. The cast is awesome and they all do a great job with their characters. Especially Aaron Yoo and Travis Van Winkle. Derek Mears is the best Jason, moving swiftly and hitting hard. The kills aren't as over the top as the original films were, but they are far more realistic and every bit as creative. The sleeping bag death scene in particular is pretty ate up. Another thing I liked was that the characters weren't oblivious to what was going on. They learn rather quickly that there is a masked mad man out in the woods and that they are all in a lot of trouble.

The Bad. This is being picky, but I feel it must be said. Two of the characters, Nolan and Chelsea, where nothing but a plot device to get rid of the groups SUV. They could have easily been cut and the film wouldn't have missed a beat. That said, their death scenes were pretty cool.

So yeah... Not only is this the best Friday film. It could easily be a new benchmark in the slasher sub genre. I wouldn't call it a remake, at least not a remake of the original. It's more a of a restart for the sequels. The movie may not be poetic art, but it is damn fun. If you were expecting anything else, then you are missing the point.

4/4

This movie is going to be either really good or really bad. I was thinking of seeing it last night, but some problems happened and I ended up not seeing it. I was going to see it tonight, but I don't feel like going out, so it's going to have to wait.

But it better be just as good as you say it is. Since you love slasher films, I'm afraid I don't know if I should take your word for it. If it's a slasher film, you're bound to like it, right? That's how I am with zombie movies (at least the big budget ones). If it's a zombie film, I know I'll like it.

So I need to hear other peoples' insights before I see this flick.

But I did look through your Friday the 13th script thread and saw that I actually read the script, and then the very last post on the thread really made me laugh inside. It's a post made by you, and in it you say:

I love the Friday the 13th movies and I wanted to make my own remake before someone else fucked it up.

Ironic, no?

Haha. Yes. My script is a steaming pile of donkey doo doo compared to the new film. Go see it now! I've already watched it 3 times and I'm going again tomorrow.

I personally hated it.  I've never actually thought "wow, what a waste of money" as much as after I walked out of the theatre yesterday.  I know people say that every plots been done and blah bah blah, but there was literally not a single original thing in this movie.  It was almost as if they were striving to use every cliche in the book, and the characters are so retarded that you can't even begin to think that they might be even remotely based on humans with brains.

But if thats your sort of thing, I mean, to each his own.

The film is a remake of a rip off and you're complaining that it's not original. Tell me, what were you expecting? Also, what made the characters retarded to you? Yeah they were a bunch of crotch creams, but isn't that what Friday films are about. A bunch of walking cliches have sex, do some drugs, and then get slaughtered.

Not trying to pick a fight or anything. Like you said, to each his own.

I really don't see the point in someone complaining about a lack of originality in a damn REMAKE. And in this particular case, this claim is even more ridiculous considering Friday 13th and Halloween pretty much set the standard Horror cliches we all know today.

That being said, I had to hold back on watching it (personal matters), so I haven't seen it yet. I may end up hating it

I hated the original so this one doesn't really have much of a chance. I'll wait till this film is in the bargain bin with the rest of the horror films people call classic and are really not that good.

So you two are saying that a re-make can't be original?  And being a remake excuses it from having to be original?  That seems ridiculous to me.

The entire concept behind a remake should theoretically be "How can we take an old idea and put a new light on it that makes it original in some way?", and then if they do a good job with that they've created a good movie that stands alone as its own thought, and makes lots of money doing it.

This had absolutely nothing original in it and to me that makes it a bad movie.  Even for a remake.  My bloody valentine was a remake, and while by no means a totally original film, it kept me interested; which is more than I can say about friday.

RE: Characters.  I'll agree with you that character development is never a big thing in slashers, but never have I ever felt so separate from them before in my life.  Yeah, you've got to give the audience what it wants, boobs, sex, drugs, etc., but there is a threshold.  It seemed like the characters in this movie were just robotic vessels to bring the boobs sex and drugs to the screen.  The following thoughts were the only ones expressed by the the majority of the cast:

-Have Sex
-Get wasted
-Be naked

And then there was the snobby dude, who had the above AND:

-Protect house
-Protect Girlfriend

And thats it.  It was like watching a rated-r Porno.  Pointless.

This isn't just any remake though. This is a remake of a film that wasn't original to begin with.

Watched this ealier tonight, was very, very happy.

I cant really say too much, there's not much to say but thank God they brought back the traditions of the Friday The 13th movies and just didnt look for anything else! This is what I wanted - and what I got and more.

Delighted, it was like being back in the 80s again but in the 2000s...

Jason was at his best if not THE best...

It's not original, its not a new idea - and it dosnt try to be. For some, thats a bad film - for fans and those that crave the slashfests from year gone past, it is a golden egg.

I loved it, from seeing Jason sink as low as he did in the late 80s to this movie in 2009 is amazing to me. But then you need to be a bit on the weird side I guess to appreciate that!

Amen,
4/4

SPOILERS!!!

I watched it on friday the 13th. lol. I liked it. I think it had some originality in it. They killed off almost a whole cast in the beginning, never seen that before. With that beginning, they set up Jason and his history of massacring people. The black guy fought Jason before being killed. They even killed the love interest.

The characters didn't really matter much except for Jason.  He was the star.

Not much else to say. I enjoyed watching the film.

This movie was pretty sweet, had everything you want in a slasher film, lots of sex, lots of drugs, lots of alcohol and lots of gruesome killings, but what made me love this movie was a scene 'bout 15 min into, one guys trying to bone this oiled up hottie with big oiled up tits so his buddy leaves and turns on his ipod, at first I didn't know what the song was but I recognized it, then the song got louder and louder, then the drums kicked in and I knew it, my eyes lit up like Christmas lights and had a grin from ear to ear, then blasting through out the cinema was Sister Christan by Night Ranger, at that moment I knew this movie was gonna rock, I had a gut feeling, and my gut is never wrong.  This movie is gonna deliver.  This worked sooooo much better than the Halloween remake, first off the characters aren't vile cruel disgusting human beings other than the guy who works in the barn, but he was funny, and there is the jerk, but at least not everyone else is so hateful.  Also the movie isn't depressing, even though its fill with gore it has an up beat feel to it, there is a lot of fun going on.  plus I like how Jason doesn't just run, he charges...so sweet.  The movie does leave a few questions but I didn't care at all, like how he keeps that one girl hostage for 6 weeks, obviously he's feeding her, I'd love there to have been a scene where Jason is cooking her supper, I mean he has electricity all through the camp I'm sure he knows how to make kraft dinner.  Also, why has he never killed anyone else who lives around there until 28 years later, he pretty much leaves everyone alone till these kids show up, and I'm sure they been to that cabin before and now Jason goes after them, still I didn't care, the movie was just too much fun.  All in all if you're a fan of mad slasher films you'll like it, if not, why the fuck would you waste $8 and 2hrs outta your life

Sister Christan by Night Ranger

I hate that goddamn song, and can only tolerate it in the "baseball" scene in Boogie Nights.

I just felt compelled to say that.
