The Killer Cut DVD is even better than the theater version. The new versions only like 1o minutes longer, but there are a ton of alternate camera angles throughout, so really there must be at least 30 minutes of new footage. One thing that bothered me in this new version is Whitney's escape scene. It's a bit pointless. I get the feeling that we're still missing quite a bit of footage. There's also an alternate barn scene where Jason gets his mask that works SO much better. I have no idea why this scene wasn't used for the theater cut. Anyways, if you liked it in theaters, check it out.
Finally saw this today on Blu-ray. I was actually quite impressed with it, on just about every level.
I have been a fan of the series, but thought that pretty much every sequel after Part 3 was bad, and each got worse. Jason X and Freddy vs. Jason were much better than the middle 6 or so. I've seen all of them at the theater, so there I go dating myself again.
So I went in not sure what to expect. First of all, the production was very good. Lighting, sound, and sets were all well done. The FX were very good, and I even thought the acting was close to top notch. I didn't have any cringe moments in terms of acting or even spoken lines. Sure, there were some dumb things that various characters did, and Jason sure does have a knack for getting around to exactly where he needs to be, but overall, it worked well for me.
I liked how Jason was portrayed as a much leaner, meaner version of his old lumbering self. He was much more brutal, also, which I feel helped with the overall feel of this re-imagining of the franchise.
OK, now for the T & A, which was more than impressive. These girls were hot as shit and had amazing racks. The nudity and sex scenes were even done in a way that it really didn't come off as completely gratuitous, so kudos for that.
I'm impressed with Nispel's take on this, and I feel he, the cast, and the entire production crew did a very good job here. I was expecting much less, so I've got to say, I'm impressed and actually look forward to another.
I rented this for a friend and decided to watch it again with her, hoping to get a better opinion of it. I sorta liked it the first time in the theater, but the more I thought about it afterwards, the more I hated it. I was hoping this second viewing would win me over.
Man, what a mistake. It was even worse the second time around.
Some problems I had with the film: I didn't want to rewind any of the death scenes, which is a horrible thing as I do it at least once in most slasher movies. The sex was extremely gratutious. I watch slasher movies for the creative kills, not for the five minutes of two teenagers pounding each other with no gory payoff. Complete waste of a potentially good scene.
I thought there were too many characters falling into the same basic traps; Asian guy wanders off alone and gets killed. Black guy looks for Asian guy alone and gets killed. Busty bimbo walks upstairs alone looking for boyfriend and gets killed. Boyfriend runs alone through the woods and gets killed. With no creative deaths to justify this repetition, it's a nightmare.
Even my friend looked at me ten minutes into the movie and asked if the script was written by chimps. I threw up my hands in a "why the hell not!" gesture.
I did find myself loving the part where the two kids are walking around the cabin, and the girl asks her boyfriend, "What if a homeless man lives here?"
Then he's not homeless, dumbass!
A complete waste of time and money. For me, it killed the franchise. It'll take one hell of a sequel to get me interested again.
Killed the franchise? Are you frickin' kiddin' me? It revived a completely dead franchsie! It did $91 Million worldwide! Probably close to the total of the first 10 actual Friday movies combined (well, not quite, but you know what I mean)!
I've read all the posts in here, and wanted to comment on Shelton's, where he said, take away the iconic Jason, and it's no different, or better, than Hatchet. WTF? C'mon! Complete and total difference in literally everything. I mean, look at most, or pretty much any typical slasher flick, and you should see huge differences in production values, lighting, sound, FX, and again, even acting. I'm usually a real stickler when it comes to being critical (as most of you know), but the acting here was more than decent. I was actually very impressed with Padelecki, for one. He delivered his lines with real conviction, and I never once felt he did a poor job.
Your quote about the "homeless man" needs to be taken in context...it came from a chick, that just may be pretty lame brained. Know what I mean?
Overall, this was well done, and a huge step up from just about all cheapass slasher flciks over the years.
To me, personally, ---- Didn't like it. It's literally a remake of the 1st 4 films if you think about the characters and plot points used inside it.
1 - The guy looking for his sister after she goes missing. Believes Jason is behind it. -- We seen this in part 4.
2 - He gets his iconic hockey mask -- We seen this in part 3.
3 - (SPOILER) He bust up from underneath the bottom of the dock to get ol' girl at the end... -- We seen this in part 2.
4 - We see his mom get her head knocked off -- We seen this in part 1

This was a 90 min movie that tried to cram nearly 8 hours of content into the time... Not only that, they did it in record time. They spent way too long on the intro cast who we never see again and all die. Why? Why even bother building these characters, who by the way were all much more likable than the cast we are left with aftwards... They took nearly 20 min to tell their story and kill them off.
It was a ho hum experience, riddled with been there and seen it all moments. I also didn't like the choice of Jason. He just wasn't as fitting to me. Even the Jason from the abysmal Freddy vs Jason was a much better candidate... He was much larger and much more imposing.
Balt, they purposely brought in elements from the first 4 flicks. They did this as an homage and also to give older fans of the franchise stuff they would recognize and relate to...and appreciate.
I didn't personally like the very ending, but, you're defintely right, and they did this completely conciously.
The long intro was quite unique, actualy, and proves that you can do LITERALLY anything, and get away with it...or make it work. I also liked the initial cast as much or more than the main cast. Why build these characters? Why not build any and every character? How many times did the franchise literally intro a character who was killed within seconds or minutes? Alot! And no one appreciated it...me for sure on that note!
I'm just very surprised with all the negatives, as IMO, it was just so obviously so many levels above most of the garbage we get in this genre. What were you expecting? They had to follow a certain formula and they did, but they upped the ante in every department...mostly in production value, which I for one, totally appreciate.

I'm not gonna lie, the movie did awesome at the box office. It holds the record for one of the biggest horror opening weekends. That's huge.
However, if we're bringing box office success into this, it's just as easy to bring up its shortcomings, and this movie also holds a record for one of the biggest dropoffs of all time. That's huge, too.
The Friday the 13th franchise is not dead because of this movie. It made too much money for that to happen. What I meant was that this movie killed the franchise for me because, no matter how awesome a future sequel is hyped to be, I more than likely will avoid it. I don't care to see what happens next from here. The same thing happened with me and the Saw movies. I stopped after Part III because it went in a direction I didn't want to follow.
I'm usually a real stickler when it comes to being critical (as most of you know), but the acting here was more than decent. I was actually very impressed with Padelecki, for one. He delivered his lines with real conviction, and I never once felt he did a poor job.
.
I'm surprised you liked it.
It is a step up but that's not saying much.
The only Marcus Nispel film I enjoyed was Frankenstein. Pathfinder was decent and Chainsaw was average.
I hope his Conan movie will be what Pathfinder should have been. At the very least a good action film.
Yeah, I saw Pathfinder at the theater, and also own the deluxe DVD, but it's not what it should have been. If you read about the production, you'll find out all the hitches they had and that it was postponed for a shit long time!
I do love a good Viking flick though. Ever seen the clasic "Long Ships" with Richard Widmark and Sydney Poiter? I remember so well watching that with my Dad on TV...again and again...and again. We both loved it! Great flick!
I thought Nispel's TCM was a big step in the right direction. I was actually quite impressed as a whole.
Put off seeing it for a while because for some reason I epected it to be terrible, especially after how poor the Halloween remake was.
This was the complete opposite, it was the best one they've ever made.
I've always loved the Jason films. F13 and Maniac Cop were always my favourite of this kind of film, and it was incredibly gratifying to watch a film that brought back that era in such style. Really a treat to watch, I must say.
Jason was excellent, he had a brilliant physical presence and felt genuinely threatening in a way I'm not sure he ever has before.
The first twenty minutes of this with the initial cast really blew me away, I have to say. It started brilliantly with the Mother scene and just went from strength to strength. It was very intense and left me quite shocked as to how good it was; Much, much better than I anticipated.
There were some flaws. The ending fell more than a bit flat and there were a few logic lapses: Police couldn't find his sister, but they couldn't have looked very hard round the camp considering he keeps a lighted altar to his mum that everyone stumbles on...
Good to hear, Dec. I agree with you, as is obvious with my review. This was indeed a few flights better than anything F13 has ever done...well...the first 2 were definitely standouts for their time, but taking everything into consideration, this was well done on just about every level.
