So this is one of those films that seems to have been around for ages and yet proved really difficult to see anywhere. I finally got to watch "Let the Right One in" yesterday and it was worth the wait, it is a cracking little film, one of the best vampire films I have ever seen.
Set in the 80's it concerns Oskar, a lonely 12 year old boy living near Stockholm who befriends the 12 year old Eli who has just moved into the house next door. Eli too is lonely and they quickly form a bond. Of course this is a vampire film and there is more to Eli than first meets the eye.
Much of the film plays like a European indie flick, it certainly does have that feel. It is a great example of what you can do with horror on a low budget, and uses suspense and character to create tension rather than splatter and gore. It is based on a novel of the same name and the script was also adapted by the author, it very well written in most parts with only the climax that I feel lets it down ever so slightly.
A real top quality supernatural film that they just don't seem to make much of anymore. I would certainly recommend this to anyone, It comes out on DVD this week in the US so get in your net-flicks queue and watch before the US remake comes out next year, no doubt substituting the suspense and character for fake blood and special effects.
Let The Right One in became my absolute favorite Horror movie bar-none immediately after watching it. The suspense is excellent, the character interactions are magnificent, and the film is exceptionally done on all technical levels. Perfection.
Films like these are hard to come by -- most other Horror movies, specially in this decade, can do nothing but rely on gore, shock scares, and a fast pace to scare or interest today's audience. Let the Right One In is one of those few, precious bright spots in an era of pure crap.
The fact that it is being remade simply proves that the Hollywood industry is jealous of the film's quality and critical success, Let the Right One in is a grade 'A' Horror masterpiece.
I really liked the movie as well, but I consider it to be a drama much more than a horror movie. It's a dark drama to be sure, but the focus is really on the relationship between the two characters. More of a drama with a thriller backdrop. Sort of how I felt that Southland Tales was a comedy with a sci-fi backdrop.
I watched this again last night. For me this is a proper horror movie. True tension held tight throughout. It didn't need to rely on gore and special effects and pointless kills. As with most good films another viewing reveals more layers.
