I'm a fan of foreign cinema; I'd say about 80% of the films I watch are foreign. I love foreign films, there are so many gems, but once in a while you watch a little rare gem that literally blows you away.

Two days ago I watched 'Water Lilies', and it was quite possibly one of the most beautiful films I have ever watched. I have been thinking about the film non-stop since I watched it (hell, I even dreamt about it yesterday) which is always a good sign. The fact that this is Céline Sciamma's (the writer-director) first film, and that all of the lead actresse's were non-professional's only add's to this film's greatness.

The ending actually moved me. Not to tears, but the final shot, mixed with the music seriously sent chills up my spine. This was the first time in a long while I have sat through the credits, physically unable to move.

Basic synposis from IMDB:

"Summer in a new suburb outside Paris. Nothing to do but look at the ceiling. Marie, Anne and Floriane are 15. Their paths cross in the corridors at the local swimming pool, where love and desire make a sudden, dramatic appearance."

Okay, that summary is pretty lame, and you'd be mistaken for thinking it is just another teen drama... But it is much, much more than this. I'd seriously recommend hunting down this film if you love foreign cinema. It's quite slow moving (which didn't bother me), but seriously do watch this.

And any French people here (ie, Michel), have you heard of, or seen this film?

Toby.

Hey Toby

I did watch it. But sorry to upset you, I found it long (very long) and extremely boring. Like you pointed it out, it was played by non-professional actresses and I found them bad. I agree the plot from IMDB is lame and I didn't find any link with the real subject of the film: birth of a lesbian feeling in young girls. You've seen a French film that we qualify in France of so called-intellectual. There are a lot over here.

But that's only my opinion. OTOH, I'm glad to see that some people here try to watch something else than blockbusters and talk about different kind from late threads (Transformers, Halloween, or other shi**y US remakes)

Michel
