I had been waiting forever to see this movie, only to find out that it had a limited release (which always seems to be the case for movies I want to see). So I travelled an hour and a half out of my way to see this one but it was completely worth it. The story is simple, it's a guy who's fallen in love with this girl who doesn't feel the same way and he tries to figure out what went wrong in the 500 days they spent together. I'm a big fan of Zooey Deschanel, both her acting and music, and this incorporated both. Joseph Gordon-Levitt also gives a really notable performance as a love-struck sap, I've never been a fan until now. This movie isn't the typical romantic movie at all, it tries its best to switch things up and has a different style, which I think a lot of movie-goers will appreciate. The movie takes you on a rollercoaster of the emotions of a relationship, topped off with a great soundtrack. The whole movie kept me smiling the whole way through and I would highly recommend this to anyone!

I love both actors, but it seems like it's going to be a rehash of one of my most hated films of all time: GARDEN STATE.

So, if you can tell me why it's better than GARDEN STATE, I'll probably see it. I work at a movie theatre and the movie poster freaks me out.

Terrible screenplay. Beyond terrible soundtrack. I cannot stand Zach Braff. He's so ugly and stupid and I couldn't stand looking at him. Mediocre story with mediocre characters.

Hated it. Thumbs down from me. (But maybe not from Me.)

Could you be more specific about what's wrong with the screenplay?

well, i find 500 days of summer a lot different of a film than garden state, but if you weren't a fan of that soundtrack you might not like the music in 500 days, it has the same kind of independent music, which i think really works for the movie. other than that, the movie does have some similarities in the "off-beat couple" but it comes off as a completely different movie to me. this movie has a different, more up-beat fast pace to it, i can't see anyone not being entertained. i'd check it out!

I'm back! did you miss me? Lol

Anyway, I watched this movie at the weekend knowing full well what to expect. A crappy rom-com though this time an independent rom-com so no doubt a crappy Juno rip off too. But her indoors does love a good rom-com so now and again I have to give in and venture to the other side for 90mins, and even though I have not quite completed my recovery from 'The Proposal' we went to watch this anyway and when the commercials were finally over I sank back in my seat and prepared for the worst.

It was brilliant, easily my favorite film of the year so far. Very smartly written, superbly directed and edited and the two leads for perfectly cast. I was so taken aback I honestly went back to the cinema the next day and watched this again on my own just to make sure it really was that good and even more strange for a rom-com it was better second time around.

The tag line sums this movie up perfectly "Boy meets girl, boy falls in love, girl doesn't." Joseph (The new Heath Ledger) Gordon-Levitt is Tom and Zooey Deschanel is Summer, the girl he meets and falls in love with and the 500 days in the title is the 500 days that they are together. The whole film is told in non-linear style showing different days from various points in their relationship so we get a really mixed up view of the events that lead their break-up, just like real memories would come back to us.

There is a lot going on in this film, it could have easily have been a disaster but whether through sheer luck or great skill the first time director Mark Webb seems to have pulled it off pretty much unscathed. The great script must take credit for much of that, this really is the first romance movie I have seen for a long time that is just so realistic. These are things that happens to guys everyday, I have been through this myself and am sure 90% of all guys have. The scene when Tom is walking to work the morning after him and Summer finally get it on is just superb, I mean cheesy as hell and it really should not work but it does. In that one over the top, singing and dancing moment it summed up exactly how all men feel when in that position.

Top movie, I really recommend to everyone. I have found to be one of those rare films that not encourages me to keep plugging away.

Cheers.

Ended up seeing this because my girlfriend spent so long picking which make-up to get on 3 for 2 that we missed the screening of Adventureland. But what a pleasant surprise!

This film strongly reminded me of one of my favourite films: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Both start with a relationship in crisis and then jump back through memories to try and work out what went wrong. What both these films do which I love is that they try to show the history of a relationship in a different way: rather than laying out as a time-line, with a beginning, middle and end, they flit from one memory to the next, using something far more interesting than the ordinary 'flashback' to illustrate a point. Rather than rummaging through the past to try and understand the future, we're given the relationship as one whole, a series of moments that all sort of exist together. Because that's what relationships are like, really. You don't forget what happened in the past, it's all part of your story, all of it with you all the time. This film jumped around whenever it liked in such a skilful way that I was left astonished at the craft with which the script was operating. AND, at the end, it still found time for a satisfying denoument, and a really good (if slightly cheesy) last moment (complete with cheeky breaking of the fourth-wall, which I'm a sucker for).

The acting was pretty good, particularly from the guy. The music was good...to be honest, it was the storytelling that I'll take from this one. A really good example of how telling a story in non-linear fashion can really work, if done properly. If you liked Eternal Sunshine, you'll love this.

So yeah. A really good film.

Guess who's back? Back again?
