I went to see this. It’s really cute and funny in a lot of places. It’s not the best of the best or anything. It’s very tame and a little uneven. Sometimes it acts like it wants to be more farcical, like “Meet The Parents,” with gags like the eagle trying to steal the dog. But even those gags sort of fizzle. It’s like the writer wanted to punch up the script but didn’t really have that kind of energy. I think it would have been better if it had chosen a vibe and stayed with it. As farcical, it’s just plain weak. As a sweet romance about two people stuck in awkward situations, it works for the most part.

The story is very simple. Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock), a Canadian businesswoman working in America with a stick up her ass gets threatened with deportation. She decides to outsmart immigration by claiming to be engaged to her put-upon male secretary, Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds). As part of a plan to prove they know each other intimately, Margaret visits Andrew’s family in Alaska. Of course the family turns out to be the wonderful family Margaret never had.

The simplicity of the story works in this film’s favor. Sandra and Ryan are terrific. Watching their characters in uncomfortable situations is mostly what makes this fun to watch. The situations themselves, though awkward, aren’t particularly jolting. They stay simple. The whole movie, for the most part, remains sweet natured. If you want farcical, you’ll have to choose something more like a Ben Stiller movie. If you can tolerate sweet and simple, then Sandra and Ryan make this worth watching.

One final note: The product placement got a little annoying.

It is defintely not my kind of movie, but I went with my girlfriend, and I actually enjoyed it for what it was.

I've always liked Sandra Bullock, and I have to agree that her onscreen chemistry with Ryan Reynolds was quite good.  Betty White was also good, but a bit over the top in some scenes.

I think it ran out of steam near the end and the message did get lost at times, but I have to admit I left the theater with a smile on my face, and have admitted to seeing it an enjoying it with some guy friends even.

I didn't really like it. It was way too predictable, but I think they knew that it was, so really that's not a big problem.

Isle 10- A series I'm currently writing with my friend Adam and it will go into production soon. Think The Office meets 10 Items or Less.
