What a waste of $40 Million! Where'd the money go? Crazy, almost insane that anyone would think this would be a big movie. It's defintely not big at all.
SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS
I went into this with high hopes, as the trailers really didn't give too much away and it had the look of a scary, cool sci-fi horror hybrid. The horror is just about non existent, and the further it goes, the goofier and stupider the antags become.
The acting is poor all the way around, and Quade just doesn't seem like he's even interested. There are very few charcters actually, and no cool set pieces. I just don't understand where the budget went here. Lots of extras in make-up running after people continually, which gets really old, really fast.
The plot itself, as well as the premise appear to be what sold this idea, but when you think about it for even a little while, it falls apart fast, and makes little sense when it's all said and done. When you break down what this script is all about, it's basically a tired rehash of many better movies, we've all seen again and again. The cliches come at a furious pace in the finale, complete with an impossible "mission" and a ticking clock that almost reaches zero (you think they succeed? Never a doubt about it.).
On the positive side, it's not horrible and although a bit dull and repititous, it did hold my interest for the most part. I actually really liked the very end, and wish they had gone in a completely different direction throughout the meat of the movie to incorporate more of this "twist" into the film. But instead, they decided to go with a standard pack of mutant creatures chasing a few cliched characters throughout generic sets, in almost complete darkness for 3/4 of the film.
Really bad choice. This one's going to lose alot of money! And it deserves to.
This movie was awesome. The best sci-fi horror film since Event Horizon. Not sure what everyone else was expecting. The futuristic take on Noah's Ark was a great concept for a film and I loved the twist. Ben Foster was great, as usual. It'll flop no doubt. But like Event Horizon, ten years from now it'll have a following.
Best sci-fi horror since Event Horizon? Event Horizon was also terrible! I saw EH at the theater back in 97, and was so pissed off. I've watched it a few times since and still think it's crap, with horrendous acting and cheap-ass sets.
Pandorum's end reveal (that they'd been underwater all along and all the tubes popping up to the surface, was indeed cool and well thought out. The Noah's Ark idea was also cool, but way underdevolped.
What did Ben Foster do that was great? He didn't do much of anything, really.
Haha, this may surprise you, but I'm a big Sci-fi horror nut. I love Event Horizon.
I just like Ben Foster. He always seems to give his all when acting. I also really liked the crazy black guys(the chef) character. By far the most interesting character in the film.
Too each his own though... I'm sure there are movies you like that I don't. Well... maybe not. I like almost anything. It's a weakness. Hahaha.
I was gonna skip this film because of the overwhlemingly bad word of mouth. But since Dreamscale mentioned hating Event Horizon, a film which I think is great and has tremendous atmosphere, I just might check out Pandorum after all. Seems like this is a matter of taste rather than quality, though I won't be sure until I watch it.
Rob, I've never seen nor heard of this Spoony Guy, but you're right...I agree with him 100%...in everything he said.
I also saw alot of The Descent in this film, but I loved The Descent, as it was original, claustrophobic, and horrifying. This was none of the above.
Also, really glad he bashed Event Horizon. I too was laughing about "Larry' Fishbourne's performance, as it was just terrible. Comically terrible. Same with Sam Neil. I never understood what people saw in that movie.
BTW, where can I find that Spoony Guy? Does he do a weekly review or something?
His name is Noah Antwiler and he's got a website called The Spoony Experiment. He reviews all sorts of movies and games (but only those that suck ass - some of them are quite obscure, belive me). He's a pretty funny guy.
Down in the hole / Jesus tries to crack a smile / Beneath another shovel load
Pretty cool. Kind of loses its way at times, but it was engrossing from the start to the finish.
More could have been done with certain aspects of the plot, there was a lot going on just underneath the surface that was never really focused upon and they could have done with losing the martial arts parts, but it's the best sci-fi horror I've seen since Event Horizon as well.
Definitely recommended to anyone who enjoys this kind of thing.
I agree with Dreamscale and the Spoony guy, I thought Pandorum was pretty awful, although I've certainly seen worse. I'm not sure were the 40 million went on this one, I couldn't see it. As previously mentioned it's a mish mash of many movies including Event Horizon, Dawn of the Dead, Decent, and Aliens, to name just a few. Nothing original to be found here. It's also filmed very dark, as if they under exposed the film during shooting, and to be honest if I'd been the camera guy on this project I probably would have done the same thing. Often this works to help enhance the mood, (eg. Blade Runner, Alien or Dark Cty). Other times it is done to cover crappy special effects, or lousy set design, as I believe is the case in this ugly mess.
P.S. I liked Event Horizon.
Runner, this is the last gate. Use your key now. When the Bell sounds again...use your key. Good luck, Runner. May you find Sanctuary.
I just like Ben Foster. He always seems to give his all when acting. I also really liked the crazy black guys(the chef) character. By far the most interesting character in the film.
~Zack~
Ben Foster is dreamy especially in X-Men 3.
That's the only reason I bought this movie and I enjoyed it cause he's the star. He also has a very small role in Freaks & Geeks.
Have you seen Moon? This genre is a little dry. Moon is so boring I still haven't finished watching it and the trailer sets up this really unique and great ride but I'm still falling asleep thinking about that.
A few years ago you had Solaris which was George Clooney and Stephen Soder... yeah, nobody else cares either.
Have yet to see this, but have it lined up. When we're talking great movies in this genre, I am surprised no-one is mentioning Boyle's excellent 'Sunshine'.
With one exception to a character losing his marbles and talks to his hallucination, I actually liked the film a lot. I think I know where the budget went, too- in the production design which was used so little that they showed it again in the end credits
